11 Apr 01 - 10:01 AM (#438028) Subject: Destination Imagination info From: ARB Since so many mudcatters were interested in the D.I. team the Plaid Pirates, I decided to post info about the State tournament. The team will be performing at 9:40 a.m., April 21 in Hilliard, Ohio. They will be in Hilliard Station School on Scioto-Darby rd. I don't have a room number yet, but I'm sure signs will be posted in the building. They will be listed as Anonymously Yours middle or intermediate division. The boys have put in alot more work since regionals. They created a diorama of the Scottish highlands along with a fog machine. They have yet to get dry ice to see if this works, but hopefully it will. Adam's father and I told him that we would support him with any musical challenge he pursues. But we have also told him we don't think a career in music is a good idea. It's too risky if you have to make a living with it. Adam is no prodigy. Like most kids his age, he doesn't practice nearly enough. But I witnessed something yesterday that showed me how well he can teach what he knows. Two of the boys were singing their part with no accompaniment. Adam decided that he should pluck a simple 123 in the background to keep the song flowing evenly. For Adam this was easy, but he had to explain to two boys with no musical training how to do this. He clapped it while he sung their parts with them. They were not understanding what to do when the rests in the song occurred. Adam told them that rests were like commas in sentences. He taught these concepts so effortlessly I was absolutley amazed. It was like I was watching a miniature music teacher. He has all the patience in the world. He understands so much for such a young kid. Adam's mom |

11 Apr 01 - 03:11 PM (#438331) Subject: RE: Destination Imagination info From: Hollowfox Drat, I'll be at work (again). Adam's Mom, there's more than a few folks, some of them Mudcatters, who have a musical career (including one or more albums) that don't use the music as their primary source of income. There are college professors (Ed Trickett, Tony Barrand, John Roberts), electrical technicians (Bill Spence; I think they still use his hammer dulcimer playing as the theme song on PBS's "Victory Garden" show), and librarians (Joe Hickerson), to name a few. So it's more feasable than it might seem. Amy's Mom (she wants to start a rock band with her girlfriend. She's not practicing either) |

21 Apr 01 - 03:58 PM (#446220) Subject: RE: Destination Imagination info From: catspaw49 I was hoping to make it to Hilliard and the competition this morning, but I also had to go through one last series of CT Angiograms at Ohio State. Although I had to be there at 6:30, I still had some hope of getting in and out reasonably quickly and I'd be only about 10 miles away. Didn't happen of course as the wait between the different CT's for the dyes to clear amounted to over 6 hours. We left OSU at 2:00 and came on home....... My apologies to Adam and his team (and Mom too) but I DID have hopes.....you just don't argue with the Docs. I hope all went well as I'm sure it did and that you also enjoyed your night in Columbus. Anything that you can tell us will be appreciated and I know Deckman, Sorcha, Hollowfox, and many of us are anticipating the news. We're glad you are here with us at Mudcat and even if I didn't make it today, I'm sure that many of us were with you "in spirit." Spaw |

21 Apr 01 - 04:04 PM (#446223) Subject: RE: Destination Imagination info From: Banjer Good to hear from the ARB crowd!! I was afraid you all had fallen out of sight. I certainly hope that ADam and his group do well, but whatever the outcome, the fact that they even attempted this endeavor is wonderful! Please do let us know the results and please don't be strangers here at the Mudcat Forum. |
