Gene

I heard the song at a pub. Don't know who did it or when it was released...if ever. Definitely folk or perhaps even country.

I have a version recorded by Canadian singer Kevin Head back in late 70's or early 80's -- the LP has no date. It is listed as being written by an "A. Fraser".

The lyrics are given on the sleeve notes.

As far as I know Head's LP is long out of print. He used to sing in the bars in eastern Canada. Was it him that you saw?

The song was originally written and performed by Fraser & Debolt, a male/female duo from Canada that was recording around the late 60s-early 70s. The song is from an album called "Overnight Sensation."

Their stuff is not easy to find, but if you wanted to try, I'd start in Canada first in the used record stores.

As far as I remember, the lyrics went something like:

These dance hall girls

Know how to treat you right

They let you take

Their bodies but not their minds

There used to be a singer named Lisa something in Norfolk, Virginia, who used to perform this. I think she occasionally performed with a woman named Amy Ferebee.

Good luck!

You're welcome. I'd classify the genre as folk, or folk/rock (à la Dylan, Joni Mitchell, McGarrigle Sisters, etcetera).

Well, I'll post the lyrics as soon as I can get the album out of my box. I can't help you with the tune. It seems to be the same song as the one Kevin Head recorded.

Found these lyrics on a newsgroup, while looking for lyrics to a different song!

Dance Hall Girls/Fraser and DeBolt

These dance hall girls, they don't treat you kind
They give you their bodies, you never reach their minds
Well, they fill you up with lipstick lies
When they put you down some, don't ya be surprised
Is this the way it always is, here in Baltimore?

Well, I saw her mountains, and I kissed her plains
I held her sunshine, and I drank her rains
Well, I went so far, that I broke too fast
Thought I had a winner picked, but I came in last again
Is this the way it always is, here in Baltimore?

(CHORUS)
(Repeat from here)
I must have chosen the wrong season to come down
I never realized they call this sacred ground.

My sense of time, hell, I'm a week behind
I sent me a letter home but this all takes time.

[first ending]
Gonna get some cash, gonna go back home
These dance hall girls really know how to make a man feel alone
is this the way it always is, here in baltimore?

[second ending]
Gonna get some cash, gonna blow this town
These dance hall girls really know how to drag a poor boy down
Is this the way it always is, here in Baltimore?
Is this the way it always is, here in Baltimore?

^^

Wow, I am amazed to find this song here after not being able to get it out of my head since I first heard it 20 years ago.

What a great resource we have here.

I just read through this thread and some info needs correcting. "Dance Hall Girls" was on the first Fraser & DeBolt LP, but it was written solely by Allan Fraser, not by both.

I was up in Montreal on May 24th for the Bob Dylan birthday bash at Club Zone. Allan Fraser was there and performed "Visions of Johanna."

Bill Madison did a tape of that name somewhere in the '80s -- can't recall if there was a song by that title on it. (Jeez, and I did the J-card, too!)

Has anyone decoded the chords to another Fraser/DeBolt classic,Armstrong Tourist Rest Home? That's the one with "overnight sensation" in the chorus.
