The DT text Jeri linked to above came from Willie Scott; most people who sing it nowadays got it from him. It comes through, not as an allegory for English-Irish stuff, but for memories of happy youth, in things like "Sean O Duibhir a' Ghleanna". I vaguely remember that song, but with the chorus going something like:
Away, hark away Reynard, of course, being Mr (or Ms) Fox. Funny enough, I was just looking at old photos a friend bought in an auction in Dublin, in an album with the combined families Ryan and Stapleton (she has another from a Jeffares family, a bit older - maybe 1870s; the Stapleton/Ryan one was 1880s-90s). It has a picture of one of the Misses Stapleton, if I remember rightly, in a dangerous-looking riding habit trailing almost to the ground, in what looked like velvet, sitting sidesaddle on a spectacularly beautiful hunter. Horse, that is. The Miss Stapleton - possibly a kid called Tempie who is in many of the photos, was sitting the horse beautifully. And away, hark away. Run for it, Reynard! |

The hunting fraternity in the British Isles has a rich tradition of very singable songs, and they have survived because people were singing them a lot. They came into to the 'folk tradition' this way. I don't believe in hunting myself (far from it), but that's never stopped me joining in these songs. You can't kill things with songs. Les |

Chorus: Tally -ho! Hark Away! Tally-ho! Hark away! Tally-ho! Tally-ho! Hark away! (and on for 12 more verses!) Or Cartmel Hunting Song 1924 (songs often mark one particular, special hunt that has entered the hunt folklore)- or The Unicorn Hunt, Ambleside (NO ... the Unicorn is the name of the pub: they will still hunting foxes!) Then there's The Welton Hunt, sung by Joe Thompson on 'Pass the Jug Round' (Veteran VT142CD)- archive recording of c. 1953 which has same tune, and chorus 'Hark for'ard away, Hark for'ard away Altogether good hounds hark away' There's always been a constant re-making. One of my favourite more recent songs, from the Cumberland Farmers Hunt, is The Hound Pup - to the tune of 'Seasons in the Sun.' |

The notes I have scribbled down on my song sheet are: From the Joyce Collection, Old Irish Folk Music and Song, republished 1965. Patrick Weston Joyce (1827-1914) was an Irish collector and author of many books on Irish culture. Old Irish Folk Music and Song was originally published in 1909, and his Ancient Irish Music was published in 1906, both by Longman, Green & Co. That said, since I borrowed this book to copy out the song in 1976, I'm not really sure I knew (at the time) enough to write down the proper information! If anyone has access to these books, perhaps they can confirm my scribbled notes. |

You also spurred me to be marginally less stupid and look on my own bookshelf. Sam Henry's Songs of the People [H172, p131] gives a variant I haven't seen. From the hunted hare's standpoint it's all crap (see last line). Instead of praising those gallant riders that killed him, he roundly condemns them. Seems much more realistic. THE HARE'S DREAM On the twenty-sixth of January, and in the seventieth year, The morning being beautiful, charming, bright and clear, I being disturbed with dreams as I lay in my den, I dreamed of heathery mountains, of high rock and low glen.
