There is a Northumbrian song called "The College Valey Hunt" with the chorus
Tally Ho hark away
Tally Ho hark away
Success to the College Valey hunt
Oh hark hark away
Is that the song you want.

If you were to type tally ho into the very useful "Digitrad and Forum Search" box on the main Forum page, you would find a list of references, many of which would lead you to songs containing the term, from both England and Ireland.  Check them out, and see if one is what you are looking for.

REYNARD THE FOX

On the first day of March in the year 93
The first recreation that was in this country
The King's country Gentlemen o'er hills dales and rocks
They all set out most joyfully in search of the fox

Tally Ho, hounds away, Tally Ho, hounds away,
Tally Ho, hounds away me boys. Away hounds, away!

When Reynard was started he faced Tullamore,
Then Arklow and Wicklow along the sea shore
We kept his brush in view every step of the way
Until he made his course through the streets of Rossleigh

But Reynard, sly Reynard he hid from us that night
Ans we swore that we would wait for him until the daylight
And next morning early the hills did resound
With the sweet smell of horses, and the soft cry of hounds

When Reynard restarted he faced to the hollow
Where none but the footmen and hounds they could follow
The gentlemen cried, "Watch him, watch him, what shall we do?"
"If the rocks they don't stop him he'll cross Killdaloo."

When Reynard was captured his wishes to fulfil
We called for ink and paper and a pen to write his will
And what he made mention of we thought it no prank
For he wrote us out a cheque on the national bank

To you Mister Casey, I leave my whole estate
And to you young O'Brian me money and my plate
And to you Sir Francis, me whip, spurs, and cap
For you jumped the walls and ditches, never looking for a gap

As given in the DT with a few different words:  REYNARD THE FOX (2)  and a slightly different set:  REYNARD THE FOX,  which is why I recommended a search.  Both files have links to a midi of the tune.

The Kielder Hunt certainly has by far the better tune, but I imagine that Len wanted the Irish one.

Who does this "kielder hunt", MD? 'Cause I gotta admit, I'm a big fan of Reynard The Fox... be curious to hear a song that someone says is 'better'...

There's a gent called Brian Watson from Northumberland who sings the "Keilder Hunt" superbly and who may have recorded it

Brian is often a guest at the National Festival(UK)and should have been appearing there this year.

The Kielder Hunt was written by James Armstrong of Redesdale (Northumbria) in the 19th. century.  The DT text Jeri linked to above came from Willie Scott; most people who sing it nowadays got it from him.  The rather fine tune hasn't reached the DT yet, but is at Alan's Mudcat Midi Pages:  The Kielder Hunt.

Louis Killen does Kielder Hunt as well. (Probably a bunch of folks do it, but he's the one I think of when I think of the song.)

There's one on an old 10 inch LP in my cabinets (have to try to find it) on Folkways, sung by Wallace House, in which the chorus is:

Tally Ho, Tally Ho, Tally Ho Hark Awye
We will sing to the joys of our fox-huntin' dye!

As I recall, the first verse begins:

The sun was just peepin'
Up over the hills

Anybody know this? I'll see if I can find it.

It's my thinking that the song is probably allegory for the english chasing the irish... but it's very well done... and a killer fun song to play!!

There's no evidence of allegory; it's possible, of course, but unlikely.  Songs just like it turn up throughout Ireland and England.

Naah. Hunting was and is a popular sport in Ireland. Less popular with foxes, of course. It comes through, not as an allegory for English-Irish stuff, but for memories of happy youth, in things like "Sean O Duibhir a' Ghleanna".

I vaguely remember that song, but with the chorus going something like:

Away, hark away
Away, hark away
And it's [something] bold Reynard
Away, hark, away.

Reynard, of course, being Mr (or Ms) Fox.

Funny enough, I was just looking at old photos a friend bought in an auction in Dublin, in an album with the combined families Ryan and Stapleton (she has another from a Jeffares family, a bit older - maybe 1870s; the Stapleton/Ryan one was 1880s-90s).

It has a picture of one of the Misses Stapleton, if I remember rightly, in a dangerous-looking riding habit trailing almost to the ground, in what looked like velvet, sitting sidesaddle on a spectacularly beautiful hunter. Horse, that is. The Miss Stapleton - possibly a kid called Tempie who is in many of the photos, was sitting the horse beautifully.

And away, hark away. Run for it, Reynard!

Subject: Lyr Add: TALLY HO, MY FINE SPORTSMEN
From: Uncle_DaveO

I referred to this song above, and here are the words. This is from Gloucestershire.

TALLY HO, MY FINE SPORTSMEN!

The sun was just peepin'
His head o'er the hills,
And the ploughboy came whistlin'
Across the ploughed fields.
And the birds they did sing
How sweetly their lye (lay)
Tally Ho, my fine sportsmen,
Tally Ho, Hark awye! (away)

CHO
Tally Ho, Tally Ho,
Tally Ho, Hark awye (away)
We will sing to the joys
Of our fox-huntin' dye (day)

Come, gentlemen sportsmen,
And make no de-lye (delay)
But saddle your horses
And let's brush awye!
Sir Henry comes up
With his musical horn
Tally Ho, my fine sportsmen,
Come join us along!

CHO
Tally Ho, Tally Ho,
Tally Ho, Hark awye (away)
We will sing to the joys
Of our fox-huntin' dye (day)

We ran him in chase
Over forty long miles
Over hedges, over ditches,
Over gates, over stiles
The fox is in view
And his mettle is gone.
We will soon over take him,
For his brush drags along!

CHO
Tally Ho, Tally Ho,
Tally Ho, Hark awye (away)
We will sing to the joys
Of our fox-huntin' dye (day)

We ran him in chase
Six hours, full cry!
Tally Ho, says the sportsman
For now he shall die!
We will cut off his brush
With an 'arrowing cry!
And we'll drink to the joys
Of our fox-huntin' dye (day)

CHO
Tally Ho, Tally Ho,
Tally Ho, Hark awye (away)
We will sing to the joys
Of our fox-huntin' dye (day)

From singing of Wallace House, on Folkways, 1952.

Can some JoeClone make it so?

I always read that song not as a fox hunt, but as possibly the chase of a criminal across the country side... KInda like, what's that song about (??) Bonny 'Princess' Charlie... My Bonny Moore Hen?

Maybe I'm just out to sea... It's been known to happen...

Clinton - you may be reading more into these songs than there was in the originals. The hunting fraternity in the British Isles has a rich tradition of very singable songs, and they have survived because people were singing them a lot. They came into to the 'folk tradition' this way. I don't believe in hunting myself (far from it), but that's never stopped me joining in these songs. You can't kill things with songs.

What with Spring attackung us shortly, I'll naturally be singing

Reynard the Fox

On the first day of spring in the year ninety-three                (March 20, 2007 - 20:07 EDT)
There was great recreation was in this country
There was gentlemen and farmers over hills and dales and rocks
They rode out so joyfuly in search of a fox.

Tally-ho, hark away, tally-ho hark away
Tally-ho, hark away me boys away, hark away

{REYNARD THE FOX (2)}

But as much as there is written here & there about songs by this title, I haven't found much of anything on the source of this one. As I recall (haven't unpacked the LPs yet) Lloyd's notes on Champions and Sporting Blades don't much help.

Any ideas?

This broadside dated 1846 to 1854 has similar words to those posted above by Uncle_DaveO.

In traditional fashion, most of the fell packs in Cumbria have similar songs to this, but while each will use the same tune they'll all have different words, referring to personnel and places familiar to their own hunt, eg Walla Crag - a song of the Blencathra Hunt, which starts:
Twas early one morn at the break of the day
Jim Dalton the Huntsman, he hastened away
To Walla Crag where he uncoupled his hounds
The woods and the valleys did music resound.
Chorus:   Tally -ho! Hark Away! Tally-ho! Hark away!
            Tally-ho! Tally-ho! Hark away!
(and on for 12 more verses!)

Or Cartmel Hunting Song 1924 (songs often mark one particular, special hunt that has entered the hunt folklore)- or The Unicorn Hunt, Ambleside (NO ... the Unicorn is the name of the pub: they will still hunting foxes!)

Then there's The Welton Hunt, sung by Joe Thompson on 'Pass the Jug Round' (Veteran VT142CD)- archive recording of c. 1953 which has same tune, and chorus 'Hark for'ard away, Hark for'ard away
            Altogether good hounds hark away'

There's always been a constant re-making. One of my favourite more recent songs, from the Cumberland Farmers Hunt, is The Hound Pup - to the tune of 'Seasons in the Sun.'

Abby -
Your "Reynard" is basically the same version as mine. The notes I have scribbled down on my song sheet are:

From the Joyce Collection, Old Irish Folk Music and Song, republished 1965. Patrick Weston Joyce (1827-1914) was an Irish collector and author of many books on Irish culture. Old Irish Folk Music and Song was originally published in 1909, and his Ancient Irish Music was published in 1906, both by Longman, Green & Co.

That said, since I borrowed this book to copy out the song in 1976, I'm not really sure I knew (at the time) enough to write down the proper information! If anyone has access to these books, perhaps they can confirm my scribbled notes.

Subject: Lyr Add: THE HARE'S DREAM
From: Abby Sale

Sue Allen: Makes good sense, I never thought of that. Similar to "We set sail on ..." songs. I'm not clear that these, same chorus or not, are the same song as the sentient animal ones though.

Guest BB: Thanks. I'll look into them. You also spurred me to be marginally less stupid and look on my own bookshelf.

Sam Henry's Songs of the People [H172, p131] gives a variant I haven't seen. From the hunted hare's standpoint it's all crap (see last line). Instead of praising those gallant riders that killed him, he roundly condemns them. Seems much more realistic.

                        THE HARE'S DREAM

On the twenty-sixth of January, and in the seventieth year,
The morning being beautiful, charming, bright and clear,
I being disturbed with dreams as I lay in my den,
I dreamed of heathery mountains, of high rock and low glen.

With my hark, tally ho! hark over yon brow.
'She's over,' says the huntsman, 'and yonder she'll go.'

As I sat in my form for to view the plains round,
I being trembling and shaking for fear of the hounds,
And seeing no danger appearing to me,
I quickly walked up to the top o' Sligue.

They hunted me up and they hunted me down,
At the loop of the burn they did me surround,
But up came the huntsman to end all the strife,
He says, 'Leave the hare down and give her play for her. life.'

Bad luck to all sportsmen, to Bowman and Ringwood,
They sprinkled the plain with my innocent blood,
They let Reynard go free, that cunning old fox
That ate all the chickens, fat hens and game cocks.

It's now I'm for dying, and I know not the crime,
To the value of sixpence I ne'er wronged mankind.
I never was given to rob or to steal,
All the harm e'er I done was crap the heads o' green kale.

5.4: crap [crop] = to remove the upper or outer parts of, to clip.

Sam Henry says:
"The '70th year' mentioned in the song must mean 1770 as both these contributors knew the song since childhood, i.e., about 1850."

So... 1793? Seems to predate 1893, and I think 1693 would have more archaisms.

Also, are there any other lyrics where "resound" is used of an odor?

(I've been listening to Kat Eggleston a lot in the car the last few weeks, and this is one of songs I've been particularly enjoying.)
