Hi,

(D)I belong to Glasgow,
(G)Dear old Glasgow (D)town;

But what's the matter wi' Glasgow,

For it's (E)goin' roun' and (A7)roun'!

I'm (D)only a common old (A)working chap,

As (G)anyone here can (A)see,

But when (D)I get a (G)couple o' (D)drinks on a (Bm)Saturday,

(E)Glasgow be(A7)longs to (D)me!

sorry, didn't know the verse. I got the words out of the database, but I don't think they're quite right. I seem to remember it as "there's nothing the matter wi' Glasgow."

Hi Alison,

Doesn't the line about Glasgow "going 'round and round" mean that the singer has had too much to drink? That was what I always thought it meant.

Helen

P.S. Thanks again for the Glenroe tune, our session group loves it.

Hi Don and Helen,

Glad you're enjoying the music. Yes you're quite right the singer is "half cut", (ie. drunk).

I heard it with a short intro:

I've been wi' a few o' my cronies
One or two pals o' my ane
We went in tae a hotel
And we drank very well
And then we came oot once again
Aye, and then we went in tae another
And that is the reason I'm foo
We 'ad six deoch an' doris'
Then sang a chorus, just listen
I'll sing it for you

I belang tae Glasgow ...

That's the first verse. "I belong" is the chorus. See complete words in the DT.

Parenthetically, does anyone know why denizens of Glasgow are called "Glaswegians"?

Same reason people from Norway are called Norweigans?

I was told in Glasgow that, "that is just the way it is, after all Glasgonians would be just too horrible to comprehend."

Hi don I'm in Kitchener, Ontario, we're almost neighbors!

Send me an Email if you want to meet for a drink somewhere or just compare notes sort o thing.

ps.

On consideration I wonder at the Norway Glasgow link. Historically they had a lot of contact.
