13 Apr 01 - 02:51 PM (#439934) Subject: One Small Step = One Giant Musician Leap From: Little Neophyte I can not believe what I just did. I've been listening to John Brown's March by Dwight Diller off his CD but I have never attempted to play the tune. Then this morning I sat down and without the CD, I played the entire tune without having any struggle to find the right notes. It was just there. Went right from my head onto the strings. I could not believe my ears. This is a major leap for me. I am still feeling quite overwhelmed and stunned that I could do that. Can any of you remember the first time you were able to play something by ear never having played it before? Little Neo |

Everyone told me, just listen to the music. That listening is more important than playing. Boy do I believe them now. I also find listening to the same music over and over and over again really helps. I have narrowed my CD listening repertoire down to only 10 CDs. For 2 months that is all I have been listening to. I know this could drive someone else right around the bend, but I don't mind. I like these CDs, I want to learn how to play these tunes so I don't think much about the fact it sounds like I am playing 10 broken record. Sounds just fine by me. One thing I do know is when I finally get another 10 CDs to replace the ones I am listening to right now, it will feel like buying a new car. Little Neo |

My instructor gave the class a short piece to look at, and after he gave us the note, I sang it having never seen it before. It just popped out, surprised me as much as the instructor. Unfortunately it was never that easy again. Maybe I knew the song in another place and time, who knows? But it was sweet. |

You are training your ear and that is more than half the battle. You are just going to keep geting lifted "higher and higher" 'cause it'll just keep getting better and better. As I was classically trained, with sheet music, on the violin and piano, I never really knew how to improvise on them. I could a little bit on the violin and I can fiddle a few tunes, with lots of practise and those I do by ear, BUT the dulcimer is the first instrument, besides my voice, that I am learning and playing solely by ear and I find it is such a JOY! Next time you come into PalTalk, have your banjo handy and when someone else is singing or playing, jam along with them. It's good practise and it trains your ear even more.
