Jed Marum makes the charts

Congratulations to Jed Marum. Looking at the sales charts at Amazon.com, I see that his CD is already at #47,897.

That means only 47,897 CDs are more popular than his at Amazon.com.

Your arithmetic sucks. As does your post. Arsehole.

Murray, you are so right, my arithmetc does suck.

I just checked back at Amazon.com and Jed is still at #47,897. I also noticed that someone is trying to unload a used copy of his CD. Must be the one person who actually bought it.

The arithmetic is statistically accurate.

+/- one over 47 000 is meaningless.

The post might 'suck' but the statistical deviance is mathematically immaterial.

Sorry Seth, but if Jed's CD is at number 47,897 in the charts, then there are 47,896 CD's more popular. Statistics has bugger all to do with it. Even less has "statistical deviance", whatever you imagine that to be.

It's true. Sales at Amazon have been less then stellar. I have sold about 1,100 since Aug 2000. Only a couple hundred of those on Amazon, but more on other places; CDbaby.com, local stores and some of the venues where I perform. Sales at Amazon dropped sharply about one month ago. The album had been ranked in the 8,000 to 10,000 range for months before that.

I am not sure how the amazon sales rank works, except that it swings dramatically with recent sales. If three CD are sold in the next week, that sales rank will go back to the 10,000 range (which is apparently a good sales rank). Just for perspective; Tim & Mollie O'Brien's "Take Me Back" is ranked at about 32,000 while Altan's "Best of Altan" ranks about 8,000.

I'm not sure how to impact the sales. I'm sort of at the mercy of the little bit of US radio airplay its recceived, and people stumbling their way onto the album while searching amazon or cdbaby. I have been luckier with European radio time, and I suspect that's where the early amazon sales went.

Hmmm. I wonder how many CDs Guest has sold?

Exposure is the key, I think. It's a great CD, and the song-writing is excellent. You need to get it heard, and that's a tough chore considering what commercial junk saturates the airwaves.

Since I only get to visit Mudcat about once a week due to my daughter's stinginess with HER computer, I try to check out as much as possible. With all the fine helpful and good folks here, it's always a shock to see simple nastiness rear it's head, but it's becoming an increasingly common occurrence. Last week "Guest #1" (our most disgruntled folklorist, I'm told) attacks Peter T. and Jeri. I haven't met either of them, but they seem to be two of the nicest people here. Why the attack?

I've read many of Jed Marum's postings and I DO own his album. He's never rude, he doesn't toot his own horn. What satisfaction could anyone get by insulting him? It's beyond me.

Other than that, I love the place.

Martin

JM:

1,100 independently produced CDs sold since August is pretty damn good in my book! I've been there, done that, and fully appreciate the "art" of gig-based selling, internet sales and the like. My only words to you are congratulations! Well done. There are thousands of indie artists around who would love to have your numbers.

Best,

Paul

Yeah, Martin, what you said. I have been around her longer than most, not quite as long as some. This happens every so often. Somebody with penis envy, self image problems, and in love with one of their parents in the carnal sense if ya get my drift, takes a whack at someone. Want to see what an honorable person........a person of integrity......looks like? Take a look at Jed's post in response. Even if I think his politics are screwed up.......LOL...............that is what the face of a decent human being, and a wonderful Mudcatter looks like. And any idiot that can't recognize a wonderful CD by listening to it, is probably a no talent, tin earred eejit, anyway.

Well, it hit the top of the chart at my house Jed. Also went over at Karen's lab too. I'm told that one of her co-workers ordered it. And of course Mick is right...........Jed Marum IS a class act whether we agree or disagree. Plus, there is no denying his talent musically.......All in all, a good man, a polite man, a gentle man. I, on the other hand................

Hey Guest ....... You're a fuckin' dick. Just a dick....not even a hard-on........just a half-inch prick with a bad cut job and balls resembling dessicated peas. You'd probably suck a root as long as a rake handle though, so blow me.

Hey Spaw, does Mrs. Spaw know that you're a faggot surfing the net for blow jobs?

Oh.......then you're offering a second? If I just had a name I could collect huh? Why not just post your mother's name? I'm sure she'd be happy to return to her former occupation.

In another thread, Spaw just said, "I'm basically stupid and just don't get it."

Ok Spaw, you're right.

Bye-Bye 'til next time, I'm off to buy Jed's CD at Amazon.com

WEll, I'm glad you're buying Jed's CD anyway. It really is a winner.....and even someone as stupid as I am can appreciate real talent. Since you've decided to end this here, please give my best to your mother.

Lowering the tone a little bit here, I have to agree that Jed has done amazingly well to sell 1100 CD's! Judy and Dennis Cook have a saying, "Oh, yes, there's TENS of dollars to be made in folk music!!!"

We (folkies) still make 'em, though, because the people who want them will buy them and play them and our music will be out there. Sales are nice too though. Just don't give up your day job. [Does anyone remember the Country Gazette album with that title?]

Of course I have to say much in defense of my friend and bandmate. He is a gentleman and a scholar, and a DAMN fine musician and songwriter. GUEST obviously has some personal issues, that he/she feels like taunting someone with something so immaterial as CD sales.

GUEST, pick a REAL issue, and get a life.

I think you're stupid git.

... this has been a curious thread, and I'm tempted to just ignore it as it dies a quiet death in the forum, but I have to say thanks to all for the kind and supportive comments. Maybe GUEST did me a favor by bringing the issue to light. GUEST, I hope you do buy a CD from amazon - every purchase there helps! And I hope you enjoy the music. If you send me PM with your mailing address, I'd send you a CD - so you won't have to buy it.

What started out to be a curious, but mild 'tweek' has turned into a show of support from my friends - and has made me realize that my sales may not be so bad afterall! I've collected some advice on advancing those sales, and gained some insight, ideas and support for the next recording project. Thanks GUEST - thanks friends.
