From: Mark Cohen

I'll be loving you, always
With a love that's true, always
When the things you've planned
Need a helping hand
I will understand, always, always
Days may not be fair, always
That's when I'll be there, always
Not for just an hour
Not for just a day
Not for just a year, but always

I have the chords at home, and will post them tomorrow if no one else has done so. You might try clicking on "Links" at the top of the page and checking to see if it's in the Lester Levy Sheet Music Collection. I love this song!

Aloha,
Mark

Mark,

Nice chords! I would change this part:

D7)That's when I'll be there,
(Cm)al-(Gm)ways
Not for just an (Bbm)hour

to:

D7)That's when I'll be there,
(Cm6)al-(D7)ways
(Gm) Not for just an (Bbm)hour

The Cm6 being 5-X-5-5-4-X (also called Am7-5) The D7 being 5-X-4-5-3-X

I can't take credit for the chords; they came from a copy of a lead sheet that looks like it was from the original era. I haven't worked them out on the guitar; my skills are not not quite up to that, but maybe getting closer. But I agree they are beautiful chords, for a beautiful song. That Berlin guy was not too shabby! I'll have to try your idea.

Aloha,
Mark

Who on earth wants to play in the key of F, for crying out loud?

Words my mother used to sing:

I'll be breaking rocks, always,
I'll be picking locks, always,
While you're rifling rooms,
I'll be in the Tombs
Making pretty brooms, always, always . . .

As far as I know, tf, that's the way Mr. B. wrote it. Guitarists who aren't comfortable with movable chords should feel free to transpose at will. (Or at anybody else if Will isn't interested.) Although, as with many Tin Pan Alley and jazz tunes, the individual chord names are only an approximation of moving melody, bass, and internal melodic lines in the accompaniment, so standard open position chords don't really do it justice. (Spoken by someone who understands chords a lot better than he can play them!)

Glad to help, Fergie. I hope Granny enjoys it!

Aloha,
Mark

Toadfrog, Horn players like the key of F--and standards like therse are always played in closed position. both for the rhythmic effect and to allow for a moving line to be played-- The F chord can be alternated with F6 and Fmaj7, and the C7 is alternated with Am7, so the first two lines would be played like this:

F/F6/Fmaj7/F6/
Am7/C7/F6/Fmaj7

Berlin actually did his writing in the Key of F#--

I am singing some standards at a concert, and I just can't find the chords to Always by Irving Berlin - I know there WAS a thread here on Mudcat about the same topic, but I don't think it gave complete chords to the song, not just the familiar chorus

The song starts:
everything went wrong
and the whole day long
I'd feel so blue..etc.

and then came the familiar "I'll be loving you always".......

searched all over google and yahoo, but no luck.

Any fans of standards here who could give me the chords?? thanks

Here are the complete lyrics, including the verses:

ALWAYS
(Irving Berlin © 1925)

Everything went wrong, and the whole day long
I'd feel so blue.
For the longest while, I'd forget to smile,
Then I met you.
Now that my blue days have passed,
Now that I've found you at last,

Chorus:
I'll be loving you always,
With a love that's true always.
When the things you've planned
Need a helping hand ,
I will understand, always, always.
Days may not be fair, always.
That's when I'll be there always,
Not for just an hour,
Not for just a day,
Not for just a year, but always.

Dreams will all come true growing old with you,
And time will fly,
Loving, each day more than the day before,
As spring goes by.
Then when the springtime has gone,
Then will my love linger on.

(Cho.)

You can hear the verses here:
"Always" - sing-along at GreenRidge Estates

Irving Berlin wrote this in 1925 for Ellin McKay while he was wooing her despite her father's determination to keep them apart. They married in 1926 and death (hers) finally parted them in 1988, a year before he passed away at age 101.   Guess he really meant the words of this song.

I guess Leonard Cohen made up his own addition when he sang "not just for a week-end or a shake down in the shower?"

YouTube: Just by the by, have found a lovely couple of versions of this song (sadly sound only for of the old performances, no 'video' of course) at YouTube.

My singing tutor always said to Make A Song Your Own - well, here's a number of performers who truly did ! ,-)

1. Here's a languorous rendition by Frankie The Sinatra:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eLh-m1Z_feY&playnext=1&list=PL70F1FEFA7048FE0E

2. And an interesting version due to variations in tempo - by Ella F.:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eSsfeqNbs1Q&feature=BFp&list=WL7229BC893E04A5A8&index=19

3. Billie Holiday's version is (IMHO!) more in the line of a pure 'jazz'-style:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iQPdnqDAJE4&feature=BFa&list=WL7229BC893E04A5A8&index=21

4. Richard Tauber does a more operatic - needless to say! - version at:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=biEoQNKCnyc&feature=BFa&list=WL7229BC893E04A5A8&index=18

5. And finally - a surprising version by, of all people, Phil Collins! :

Just 1 more link!

Have at last found a PERFORMANCE of 'Always' (in a medley) - by Frankie Sinatra - at Irving Berlin's 100th birthday celebration:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t1j5wzMJoaI&feature=BFa&list=WL7229BC893E04A5A8&index=19

Frankie S. wasn't (IMHO!) in his best-voice by those days, so doesn't (dare I say it?!) do the song justice; but ne'er mind, it's still a lovely song.

Have fun!

:-)
