Hi, Pete - you'll find your song and a vast collection of Steve Goodman lyrics at the Steve Goodman Scrapbook. Your song is here (click), but no chords.

The Lovin´ Of The Game    Pat & Victoria Garvey

(C)    (Dm7) (F)    (C) (hold)
I saw the Feather River (Dm7)glide
(F) Over shinin´ golden (C)sand,
Struck a silver ribbon (Dm7)wide,
(G) Held a million in my (C)hand. (C/G) (C)
But beside the lookin´ (Am)for
Oh, the fin(Am7)ding´s (Am)a(A4)l(C)ways (Am)tame,
And there´s (C)nothin´ drives a (Dm)gambler (Dm7)
(F) Like the (G)lovin´ of the (C)game. (hold)

All my life I ran a(Dm7)round,
(F) Searchin´ hard from town (C) to town,
But I never ever (Dm7)found
(G) Anything to tie me (C)down. (C/G) (C)
Still, I would not trade my (Am)time
For (A4)a (Am)so(Am7)lid (Am)di(A4)a(C)mond (Am)claim,
No, I (C)would not trade a (Dm)fortune (Dm7)
For the the (G)lovin´ of the (C)game. (Dm7) (F)    (C) (hold)

So long, darling, don´t you (Dm7)cry,
(F) I hope that things pan out (C) for you.
All the good times going (Dm7)by,
(G) Got to have ourselves a (C)few. (C/G) (C)
Where I´m goin´ has no (Am)end,
What (A4)I´m (Am)see(Am7)kin´ (Am)h(A4)as (C)no (Am) name,
No, the (C)treasure´s not the (Dm)takin´, (Dm7)
(F) It´s the (G)lovin´ of (C) the game.
No, the treasure´s not the (Dm)takin´, (Dm7)
(F) It´s the lovin´ of the (C)game.

I think we need a copy of the lyrics without embedded chords so that it can be more easily found with a search engine. If you search for "golden sand," you won't find "golden (C)sand." I also changed "lovin'" to "loving" (etc.) for the same reason.

THE LOVING OF THE GAME
Pat & Victoria Garvey

I saw the Feather River glide
Over shining golden sand,
Struck a silver ribbon wide,
Held a million in my hand;
But beside the looking for,
Oh, the finding's always tame,
And there's nothing drives a gambler
Like the loving of the game.

All my life I ran around,
Searching hard from town to town,
But I never ever found
Anything to tie me down.
Still, I would not trade my time
For a solid diamond claim.
No, I would not trade a fortune
For the loving of the game.

So long, darling. Don't you cry.
I hope that things pan out for you.
All the good times going by,
Got to have ourselves a few.
Where I'm going has no end.
What I'm seeking has no name.
No, the treasure's not the taking.
It's the loving of the game.
No, the treasure's not the taking.
It's the loving of the game.
