19 Apr 01 - 11:21 AM (#444400) Subject: Mudcat Contest: Dumb New Verses to Faves From: Peter T. Sparked by the 3rd verse to Danny Boy. Many, many songs could be improved (!) by the addition of a new verse, cleaning up the loose ends, tightening up the story, generally mucking around. For instance: "Well, John Henry regretted his hubris, And went over to technology He got an MBA and went into steel, And now he owns a steam drill factory, Lord Lord, And now he owns a steam drill factory." or, this classic: "How many years can some people exist, Before they sell out their songs? Yes, and how many bucks can they get for their words Hawking sneakers on TB? Yes, and how many mutual funds can a person obtain, Before they've got real security? The answer, my friend, depends." And so on.... yours, Peter T.

19 Apr 01 - 02:38 PM (#444582) Subject: RE: Mudcat Contest: Dumb New Verses to Faves From: Songster Bob One I wrote a few months after first hearing (over and over and over again, my friend) the original (yeah, it's not trad., but well-known): My uncle Walter's not right in the head, He's been that way all his life, my mother said. It's not that he's violent, or falls down the stairs, It's just he goes waltzing, waltzing with bears. It actually makes a good first verse, so that you're not immediately thrust into the middle of the story. Others occur to me, such as: Yesterday, Rock and roll was not so hard to play. Now I need a place to hide away, Oh, I believe in yesterday. That's all for now. Bob C. |
