Mudcat Contest: Dumb New Verses to Faves

Sparked by the 3rd verse to Danny Boy. Many, many songs could be improved (!) by the addition of a new verse, cleaning up the loose ends, tightening up the story, generally mucking around. For instance:

"Well, John Henry regretted his hubris,
And went over to technology
He got an MBA and went into steel,
And now he owns a steam drill factory, Lord Lord,
And now he owns a steam drill factory."

or, this classic:
"How many years can some people exist,
Before they sell out their songs?
Yes, and how many bucks can they get for their words
Hawking sneakers on TB?
Yes, and how many mutual funds can a person obtain,
Before they've got real security?
The answer, my friend, depends."

And so on....

yours, Peter T.

"Where have all the royalties gone? Gone to Napster everyone. When will they ever learn? Oh, when will they ever learn?"

Some songs just need updating. FOr insance "Little Boxes" should now go. "There's a beige one, and a beige one, and a beige one, and a beige one..."

Yesterday
Gave the gardener a raise in pay
Now he's mulching all the paths with hay
He sprayed the leaves for pests, today
Suddenly
John and Yoko are eclipsing me
Eminem's replacing R&B
I'm rocking music history.

BELLS OF WALL STREET

Shall I buy stock in Disney Say the sad bells of Rhymney Is there a rally in future Cry the brown bells of Merthyr Who killed the fund-holder Say the black bells of Rhondda And will Greenspan cut the Prime Cry the grim bells of Blaina

There was a terrorist
Bombed a federal building
In the City of Oklahoma
If you kill innocents
Then we don't want ya
This land was made for you and me......

Ok so it doesn't make sense.....

One I wrote a few months after first hearing (over and over and over again, my friend) the original (yeah, it's not trad., but well-known):

My uncle Walter's not right in the head,
He's been that way all his life, my mother said.
It's not that he's violent, or falls down the stairs,
It's just he goes waltzing, waltzing with bears.

It actually makes a good first verse, so that you're not immediately thrust into the middle of the story.

Others occur to me, such as:

Yesterday,
Rock and roll was not so hard to play.
Now I need a place to hide away,
Oh, I believe in yesterday.

That's all for now.

Where have all the poets gone?
Long time passing?
Where have all the poets gone?
Long time ago?
Where have all the poets gone?
Hiding in their rooms from "rap music" every one.
Oh when will they ever learn?
Oh when will they ever learn?

-----

And it's 1, 2, 3, what are we bombing for?
Don't ask me I don't give a damn
Just got back from Bosnia, man!

-----

Some rich men came and raped the land
Nobody caught 'em
Destroyed the North Slope ecology
Just like Bush Sr. taught 'em

Well, they say that in the Army, the planes are mighty fine / But you just try to land one and you'll look like you've been mined ...

I came up with this several years ago in protest of the ever-burgeoning commercial development of my city:

The developers came with the world's largest backhoe
They tortured the timber and strip-malled the land
They dug and they built till the land was forsaken
And wrote it all down as the progress of man

And they're still at it. Anyone know how many Walgreen's one city needs, anyhow?

To the tune of "John Jacob Jingleheimer Schmidt":

Kike Gringo Nigger Limey Spic, His name is my name, too.

Whenever we go out, The people always shout, There goes "Kike Gringo Nigger Limey Spic!"

Dah dah dah dah, dah dah dah...

(repeat until riot starts)

Hee hee hee... I'm stealing this one... to "All for me Grog"

"Where is me hat,
Me Bloody, Blasted hat?
It's all gone for beer and tobacco
(looking up)Oh... sorry... here it is..."

First time I heard that one, the band hadn't been warned and it took them a few minutes to get back together and continue...

According to the wisdom of the Bread Machine thread, sometimes we must Bake Bread Together On Our Knees.

"When I bake on my knees, with all that flour I can't help but sneeze; oh Lord, have mercy on me."

If you were in that thread this makes perfect sense.
