20 Apr 01 - 06:43 AM (#445198) Subject: Water Sign From: Suffet Their first CD came out in 1998 and it bowled me over. And I ain't the easiest guy in the world to topple! Now I hear whispers that they are working on a second album. Can any 'Catter confirm this rumor? Joy? Meanwhile, you folks who live in and around the Big Apple will be able to hear Water Sign live really soon. They are sharing the bill with the Singing Conquerors at the Peoples Voice Cafe on Saturday, April 28, 2001, at 8 PM. The People Voice Cafe -- actually a medium sized meeting hall with some homemade munchies and soft drinks available -- is housed at the Workman's Circle, 45 East 33rd Street, New York City. Quite a snazzy location, just of Park Avenue no less! I hope Water Sign does "Shake These Bones." Please. Pretty please. Pretty please with sugar on top. --- Steve |

25 Apr 01 - 03:53 PM (#449259) Subject: RE: Water Sign From: Barry Finn It ain't so Steve. I shared with Lynn Noel some of the boat music billing at the Boston Folk Festival (we'd go on & then they'd come on when we went off & so on) with Water Sign who also did a concert there & they were fantastic, as always. Joy gave me a copy of their last CD if a new one's about to come out it'd be a just as great. A real blast is to just jump in with them at a session, they're 3 of a kind that beats a full house for sure. Barry |
29 Apr 01 - 11:36 AM (#451560) Subject: RE: Water Sign From: Suffet Wonderful show at the Peoples Voice last night (4/28/01). And 'Catter KAS was sitting in the front row. Who was that tall, dark, and handsome stranger by his side? Could it be a J-Girl? Perhaps the Star of the County Down (by ancestry, that is, not by actual residence)? --- Steve |

Water Sign is Joy Bennett, David Kleiman, Steve Mayer, and Ellen Weiss. Their music is a journey on America's deep river of song. Building bridges across generations and between the multitude of cultures that have influenced our American musical heritage, they are especially devoted to keeping alive the wonderful traditions of close vocal harmony and community singing. Whether offering traditional tunes and songs, contemporary or original songs, working a cappella or with instrumentation, theirs is a program of fun, creativity, humor, insight, spirit, and great vocal harmonies. Together these four musicians blend their traditional, classical, pop, theater, and improvisational music backgrounds to present spirited interpretations of a repertoire that reads across time, encompassing pieces from 14th century ribald hunting songs through soothing 19th century Appalachian ballads, Gospel and Sacred Harp tunes, rollicking sea songs, Mississippi Delta blues, ragtime tunes, Tin Pan Alley swing, contemporary folk and the occasional original. Water Sign's close harmonies are often accompanied by guitar, violin, viola, banjo, concertina, mandolin, cittern, tin whistle, bushman, spoons, bones, and other percussion. Water Sign will be joined in this concert by Marco Brehm, Evy Mayer, The NexTradition (Alison Kelley and Ken Schatz), and other special guest artists. This concert is the first recognition of and thank you to supporters of New York Pinewoods Folk Music Club's Capital Gifts Campaign. Net proceeds will be used to benefit that fund.
