Can't help you with the lyrics or chords. I used to sing it years ago after seeing Marilyn at a folk club in York. Have forgotten it, but wouldn't mind another crack at it.

She doesn't seem to have her own website. All a Google search brought up were the titles of several recordings.

Is this Roll your leg over, roll your leg over, roll your leg over the man in the moon? Or something else?

If this is the one that starts --I was reading today they`ve discovered a way, to escape from the earth .... then I can let you have the lyrics.

MAN IN THE MOON
(Jerry Spurlock)

I was reading today we've discovered a way
To escape from the earth. it's the birth of an eon.
We can fly to the stars, make the far planet ours.
Then I thought of the man in the moon.

Oh, we've taken our sweat and we've taken our brains.
We have grabbed all we have of our worldly possessions.
We have taken the best and we've used all the rest,
But you can't take the man from the moon.

CHORUS: You can rob him. You can blind him. You can knock him down.
You can chain him away where the shadows are looming.
You can beat him. You can bind him. You can tie him to the ground,
But you can't take the man from the moon.

Now there's some that go hungry and some die in wars,
And the reasons they give are completely confusing,
But we take in our stride, though we feel terrified,
And we think of the man in the moon.

Now its said when you're dead, that life comes to a head,
And there's nothing beyond but the dust all upon us
And the astronauts say that if judged by the day,
There was never a man in the moon.

Chorus.

So we take what we hear with a kernel of fear.
It is generally agreed there is little solution.
No need to despair. There's a light shining there,
'Cause you can't take the man from the moon.

Chorus.

Perhaps some one can tell me who wrote it.

Thanks for the lyrics Magaret,as far as I know it was written by Marilyn Middleton Pollock. All I have got to do now is work out the chords.

Note from Joe Offer (23 May 2022): Down below, Marilyn Middleton Pollock says the song was written by Jerry Spurlock.

The Man in the Moon
Composer: Jerry Spurlock

1/
I was thinking today we've discovered a way
to escape from the Earth, it's the birth of an aeon.
We can fly to the stars, make the far planets ours:
then I thought of the Man in the Moon.

2/
We have taken our sweat and we've taken our brains,
and we've grabbed all we have of our worldly possessions.
We've taken the best and used all the rest
but you can't take the man from the moon.

Chorus:
You can rob him, you can blind him, you can knock him down:
you can chain him away where the shadows are looming.
You can beat him you can bind him,
you can tie him to the ground,
but you can't take the man from the moon.

3/
Now there's some that go hungry and some die in war,
and the reasons we hear they're completely confusing.
But you take it in stride though you feel mystified
and we think of the Man in the Moon

Chorus

4/
Now it's said when you're dead that life comes to a head,
that there's nothing beyond but the dust of our fathers.
And the astronauts say if you judge by today
there was never a Man in the Moon

5/
Well, we take what we hear with a kernel of fear:
it is generally agreed that there's little solution.
But beneath the despair there's a light shining there
'cause you can't take the man from the moon.

The thing that brought this song to mind was the revelation that some idiots in America had given some thought to the idea of bombing the moon with a nuclear weapon.

The song was written by Jerry Spurlock, a friend of mine who lives in Amsterdam. We worked together at the Bristol Renn Faire in Wisconsin back in the 80's and I visited him in Amsterdam a few times. He also wrote The Weavers 4 daughters which is on my second album 'A Dolls House'
If anyone still wants the chords let me know. Sorry I don't get on Mudcat hardly at all. I have been semi retired for quite a while but am back singing again. I go to the states for a month every three months. I also just sang at Pontadawe folk Club in Wales and will be at the Potteries Nov 8th.
You can contact me at rocklady1977@hotmail.co.uk or from my web site.
Most of my songs are on itunes, spotify, etc now if you want to give a listen.
Thanks for remembering me
Marilyn

I have had a good luck to perform couple of concerts with Jerry Spurlock, the author of this song, and I am thinking about recording a version of this exceptional song. Thank you Jerry!
