Don't suppose you installed with Norton or some such, did you? If you did, you just go to uninstall wizard and follow the instructions.Sorry you have had such a horrible time with it....I love it :)

1. Paltalk has its own uninstall program which should be in the Start menu.

2. The auto dial annoyed me. The simplest cure for this is to go to Start/Programs/Startup and delete the Paltalk agent from there so that it won't reload when you reboot. Paltalk can then just be started as and when you require.

3. I can't really help you with the rest.

On second thoughts,

You can go banner/popup free at a cost. I forget what it is - I think they recently had an offer of $9.95? for 12 months.

Re the sound, has this just gone? There was a jtt from Dublin who came into my room (squiggle's) last week sometime who I enjoyed listening to. If it is you, sorry to see you leave.

Sometimes Frank. I generally go over to which ever of the live "unplugged" rooms happens to be open. Whether I open or not largely depends on how badly I want a more folky/bluesy balance than there is in these rooms.

I have a Paltalk icon in the lower right of my screen and when I click on it, I get a menu that gives me the option of "manual start". That's how I got rid of the autodial.

Yep Giac, that works and is simpler than my method. I guess I just don't like the overhead (even though it may be small) of having something I don't need running in the system tray.

Yes, it's me, and I'd like to use Paltalk, but the "upgrade" with those horrible popup gambling messages - which I think are deeply immoral - and the dead sound, and the incessant dialling were more than I wanted to live with. And I don't want to be blackmailed into paying $10 so I'm not bothered by nasty popups.

Pity - I liked Paltalk - though it'll be a relief to others not to have to hear me singing ;)

JTT, I, too was annoyed at the popups in PalTalk. I realize that the site must be properly funded if it is to survive, but it seemed to me that the popups were used in a particularly intrusive and offensive (to me at least) way. I was able to find a program called PopUp Killer on the net. It's a free program and manages to effectively close all Paltalk's popups before I ever see their content. Essentially, a blank window flashes on my screen and disappears before any content is loaded. PopUp Killer can be found here:

One note about using PopUp Killer - To kill the Paltalk popups, you have to have Popup Killer open on the screen and move quickly to 'grab' the initial Paltalk popup window into its 'kill' list. Otherwise the initial window is quickly replaced by the advertiser's, so if you capture only that window for your list, you'll have to grab each advertiser's window individually. One other idiosyncrasy about PopUp Killer is that I believe it propbably also prevents anyone from sending me a private Paltalk message. I'm not sure whether anyone's tried since I loaded the program, so I'm not absolutely sure of this. But I do know that Jon has frequently invited me into a music room when no Mudcat room was operating, and it saved me the trouble of going from room to room trying to find one that I enjoyed. If Paltalk PM's can't get through to me, I'll miss Jon's kind invites.

All that said, it's obvious that, if PalTalk does not at least manage to break even on its offering, the service will disappear. One way or another, users are going to have to support it or it will go the way of many other 'free' offerings.

It's not really blackmail, JTT - they have to finance their service, and they give you the choice of either paying for the service in money or in time (inconvenience). You pays your money (or not!) and takes your choice...

Graham.

Big deal, popups! It's not like someone's drilling into your skull or something! Just a fact of life on the net. Hit Alt+F4 and deal with it!

Last time we opened paltalk it asked if we wanted to upgrade. We clicked on no but it did it anyway!!!! So we are now stuck with he pop-ups too although I automatically close the window. The blurb that appeared in a recent e-mail from paltalk said they were about to change the service as they were not making money hence the pop ups but said we could opt for no adverts if we paid a subscription-needless to say I put up with the adverts and ignore them!
