Hi all -- three of the Johnson Girls (Alison, Maggie and me) took a few hours off Sunday to go visit Barry -- He sounded and looked great! We met Justine, and did some music in his room. Barry even sang three songs (his first since the hospital ordeal began.) It was great seeing him -- we brought the card that Judy Predmore had going around and also a NEFFA T-shirt. He gets released today -- and he really is chomping at the bit to get home. Justine says he's not supposed to be around crowds for about three months. I know if he had his way though - he would have been at NEFFA yesterday (probably why they waited till today to let him out!!!!)

We missed seeing all the cards that covered his walls in his room (already carefully removed and packed away for his trip home) -- the cards, posts to mudcat and the incredible support of family and friends (both old and new) are what kept his spirits up as he waited, and waited for a liver.

It was great to see him and really see how well he is doing! And I wanted to share that with all of you who could not be there in person. I tried to remember everyone's names that asked me to say "hi", but in the end I probably forgot one or two and did a blanket "EVERYONE from NEFFA sends their love." (and that's a LOT of love.

Oh, Joy, this is wonderful, wonderful, WONDERFUL news. Thank you for letting us know.

Barry, congratulations.

I talked to Barry on Saturday, and he said that both kids have a break from school this week so he'll get to spend some time with them. So it's really perfect timing and I know it's going to be a pretty special week.

Enjoy being at home again! Here's to a speedy and complete recovery!

Hi, I'm sorry I didn't get the chance to post yesterday, it being my first full day home, it was quite full & taxing. The first night home was the first night I slept the whole night, wow. 3/5 of the of the Johnson Girls (Joy, Aly & Maggie) sent me off in great singing style when they took a break from NEFFA to see me, Thanks Buds. Knock on wood, everything still seems to be right on with my recovery, though I still worry a bit. I'll make the Getaway for sure but I don't know about Mystic, depends on what the doctors say & how the kids feel about it, but it seems aside from the usuall great aray of fun folks there'll be an unsually large mudcat attendence this year that I'd hate to miss. I should be able to drive by then, I've been told to stay off the road for at least 4 weeks & I don't know if that to keep the public safe from me or me from the public or most likely to keep me safe from myself. Again, I can't thank you all enough for your show of support, no matter how small, it made quite a big difference to me. It's great to be back home with my wife & kids & it's vacation week so they get me all day long. They use to call me banana man before I went in because of the color of my skin now they get a kick out of just calling me the man from Scar Track & tell me how bad of a parent I am for being ill so long, good thing the apple doesn't fall far from the tree otherwise I'd begin to think these kids weren't my own. I think I may have lost my cookie after all this to. Hugs & kisses to you all, thanks, Barry at Home

Barry -- Welcome Home!!!!!!! Take extra special care of your wonderful self, do what the docs tell you, and look forward to a Big Reunion at the Getaway in October. Wonderful news that you're home. If you were beyond worry, I'd wonder if you were real! All of this has been -- and will continue to be -- a very big deal, not just another day at the office. By the way, tell the kids that "Scar Track" is great, although I still love the suggestion of "Hepcat." Kathy

glad to hear you sounding so good and saying the right things. Take good care of yourself and be thankful always for that fine family.

Best As Always,

Spaw

Barry,

I imagine you can get a cookie transplant more easily than resetting a liver.

It's just great to hear from you. I'll picture you catching up on snuggle time.

Don't worry when you get irritable. It's just the energy returning and the mind's way of protesting the illness it has passed through. Use that energy, when it comes, to insist on what you need for the next phase of recovery, no matter how wacky or bothersome or silly it seems at the time.

Don't forget to learn that lap harp now. Let each note speak healing to your innards and your soul.

~Susan

great news Barry!! Glad you're home at last -- it was great seeing you last Sunday and hearing you sing touched me greatly! Justine is terrific! (hey, she HAS to be!) Wish I could make it to the getaway, but it's also the NY Pinewoods' fall weekend - bad timing!

Well -- feel better - one day at a time -- get plenty of rest and lots of love from your family. I'm sure they are rejoicing at your amazing recovery -- I know we all are.

take good care --

Joy

and by the way, liver transplants are hot topics right now -- especially partial transplants. Port Charles (yes, a daily soap opera on Fox) has a story line where someone is awaiting a liver transplant and another person (living) is a "perfect" match. This is one complicated story as the match is doctor recovering from drug dependency and is of course afraid of becoming dependent once again in the course of donating a portion of her liver. But the story really talks about the process of a partial transplant.

Barry - great to hear you're home! (And that you got a good night's sleep. Hospitals aren't much good for that.) I'm surprised they didn't force you to stay longer, what with all the singing.

Now, when Justine tells you you're cranky and need a little nap, do what she says!

Barry, I'm glad you're home & relaxing with your family. I'm sure as soon as you get your energy back, you'll be itching to get to a musical gathering ASAP, & everyone will want to see you. I know it's nearly impossible to suppress you, even with all the immune suppressent medications... But it's even harder for a festival crowd to suppress all their germs & viruses... So if you continue to recover like Superman, it will be wonderful if you can make it to Mystic &/or Old Songs. But if you recover more like a mere mortal, you may want to think about all the other festivals you can go to, while waiting for next year's Mystic... We're all in a hurry to see & hear you again, but we want you around for the long term, so if that means waiting until you can safely handle a crowd of germs, then so be it... Heaven knows what kind of ornery germs are common to the species "mudcat".

July 7th, the New Bedford Summerfest, has people like Lou Killen, The Patons, Roberts & Barrand, Ray Fisher, some blues, & a decent selection of contemporary acts.

July 25th, Roisin White from Ireland will be at Paddy Burke's. (Niamh Parsons is only tentatively booked in June, I haven't been able to confirm it...)

The Portsmouth Sea Music Festival is in late September. Then of course there's the DC Getaway. And one weekend after that is NOMAD, which is having more & more sea music each year: The N.Y. Packet & friends barely fit on the stage. A fair number of "Mystics" show up...

And of course, if you post on the mudcat where you're going to be when you first start getting out & about, you can be sure there will be a good number of mudcatters making a point to be there. And maybe a mudcat with a nice big house, will return your hospitality, & host a mudcat gathering not far from you...

So I hope you can make it to this year's Mystic &/or Old Songs, but I'm a worry wort, & just felt the need to remind you that "there are more fish in the sea"...

Take care, Judy

Barry, fantastic to hear you're doing so well and that your sense of humor is intact! Hope you'll continue to mend at this remarkable rate. But do consider Judy's points above...

How about bringing Justine and the kids to the Getaway -- they'd find a whole lotta friends! Looking forward to seeing you then!

Cheers, Nancy

YESSSSS!!!!! Barry, Bill told me you had posted here, but I really really felt you were back amongst us when I saw the prison work song you posted on the Woodpecker Song thread.

Very glad you are starting to sleep through the night. That will sure help.

I second the motion about checking whether it might be possible for Justine and the kids to come to the Getaway. You have seen what a free and easy place it is for kids, my own son is 18 now and last year was the first time he EVER missed a Getaway.

Anyway, keep on "getting well soon," it's great!

Rita

ps the CD and the info I promised are ready to mail and I plan to get to the Post Office tomorrow.

Great news, Barry! Coming home must be a breath of fresh air. Hospitals are such crummy, dreary places to recover in. Welcome home. Joy, Alison, and Maggie of The Johnson Girls came over and sang to you? Hell, I WANT a new liver, too!!!

Good day to you all, thanks for all your encourging posts. Recovery have been proceeding better than ever expected & I'm able to make a pest of myself around the house. I guess it's probably high time this thread should fade away from the screen (though it will never fade from my heart). All the well wishing was as fine a show of support as any one person could have dreamed of & it more than helped in my recovery. There's no way to thank so many for so much except maybe to let you all know that your kind gestures are for sure one of the reasons & causes that my body & spirit are as strong & responding as they are & helped lead to the speed in my recovery, even though sometimes I can be an animal, a good bit was due in a large part to all of you. Hi riGGY, can't believe that memory of yours, that was over 20 yrs ago, how nice to be young, I guess I got a bit older, ran into some problems & finally got my loan callled in & had to pay at least some interest after all these years. Hope to see you & everyone else soon. Lots Of Love, Barry

Thank you, Barry. Now, I guess we can all talk about you behind your back.

There's only one thing for you to regret in this difficult ordeal you had... losing that "winter tan."

If you feel well and strong by June 1st, perhaps you'll join me in Portsmouth to welcome Bill Sables & Co. to the USA.

All the best,
Dan

BTW I have a a lovely old Time Life "Cooking of the World" book on New England cookery with your name on it here...great photos! If you give me your address I can mail it on over to you.

Judy: wish I could host that gathering! I had hoped to do so at some point, but I can't imagine I will move into a bigger place than the one I am leaving....
