Lyr Req: She Was Crazy, He Was Mad (L Rosselson)

Subject: Who sang this song?
From: GUEST,bh084@sheppard.torfree.net

A long time ago, I heard a song whose chorus went like this: He thought she was the Queen of Sheba She dreamt he was a prince And they were dancing together in all kinds of weather He was crazy, she was stark raving mad.

Does anyone know who sang this or the lyrics to the verses?

I think the song you are looking for is 'She was crazy he was mad' by Leon Rosselson, published in his 1968 book 'Look Here'.

it starts...She was crazy he was mad, together they danced. He belived her to be the Queen of Sheba, She was convinced that he was a Prince, and they were dancing together in the wind and the weather, and she was crazy he was stark staring mad.... I haven't got the formula for spaceing out songs on a posting yet, being new to Mudcat. But i'm sure somebody who can do it remembers the song. Cheers Les

Les has helped my memory and I have found the lyrics in an insert in an LP which nobody has here except me. It is one of those private releases only bought by friends and acquaintances. The LP is called 'Brenda and Pat', a coproduction by an English/German and an Australian. Here are the lyrics as they sing them (presumably as Rosselson wrote them).

Wolfgang

SHE WAS CRAZY, HE WAS MAD (L. Rosselson)

Chorus: She was crazy, he was mad,
together they danced
He believed her to be the Queen of Sheba
she was convinced that he was a prince
and they were dancing together
in the wind and the weather
she was crazy, he was stark staring mad.

Look here, said the fellow with the grey flannel skin
and planted on his bald head: Keep off the grass
it's absolutely clear that you can't dance here
'cos you haven't got a licence, your credentials won't pass
and according to subsection A of paragraph Z
you're defaulting on your payments for the upkeep of the dead.

Look here, said the man with the two glass eyes
and plastered on his wall face: Vote for me
it's absolutely clear that you can't dance here
'cos you're clogging up the drains of our democracy
The machine is geared for action, the direction's straight ahead
and you ought to be at work producing poppies for the dead.

So they turned on the search lights and switched off the sun
and they built white walls 'round the dancing pair
Now from everywhere people come and stare
at the man and the woman who are dancing there
and the profit from the peepshow, the authorities said
will be spent on reproducing plastic popeyes for the dead.^^

I recall a R and B record (probably 10" 78) that began "Do you think you're the Queen of Sheba"? Am I the only person in the universe who has this memory?

Wolfang's version omits the final verse

"Look here", said the man with the double-barrelled chin
Grinning like a crater through his barbed-wire teeth
"It's absolutely clear that you can't dance here
For we're holding mock manouevres on this part of the heath.
Now a march in strict formation would be jolly well-bred
Instead of dancing on the coffins of our patriotic dead "

I wonder why they left this one out ?

I have this on Leon's LP "A Laugh, A Song and a Hand Grenade" and had the pleasure of joining in the chorus when he appeared in Nanaimo a year or so ago.

It's also on "Palaces of Gold" LP of 1975 (CF249) and on CD1 of the 4-CD set "The World Turned Upside Down" released in 2011 (CFCF077).

This is one of my favourite of Leon's songs.

Does anyone know the reason behind the switching of 'poppies' to 'pop-eyes' in the song? Is this some kind of reference to something I may be missing?
