Not something easily searched for, with a title like that!  The only halfway useful reference I've found so far is this, from  The Fiddler's Companion: QUEEN OF SLUTS. English, Reel. England, Northumberland. G Major. Standard. AABB. Hall & Stafford (Northumbrian Minstrelsy), 1974; pg. 15. Raven (English Country Dance Tunes), 1984; pg. 142.Brian MacNeill seems to have recorded it fairly recently.  Mike Raven's book is now available again:  1,000 English Country Dance Tunes

"The Queen of Sluts" is a song (claimed from recitation), with no tune noted, in Chamber's 'The Scottish Songs'. It looks like a parody of Child #277, "The wife wrapt in wether's skin".

Did the Queen Of Sluts once make some tarts?

;-)

And is the Queen related to Eskimo Nell or Kafoozalum?

Child thinks it's more closely related to "Kempy Kay" (King Knapperty) #33 and has a number of common verses with the much later "Queen" in Campbell. He suggests that it, in turn, may be derived from "The Marriage of Sir Gawain."

"Knapperty" is a favorite of mine (I have many favorites) and can be heard as sung by Martin Carthy on Crown of Horn. I can't be sure the tune would work for "Queen" but who knows?

I'm still assuming we're talking about the dance tune, not the song?

Is that related to the "Jig of Sluts"? (Or was that the Jig of Slurs… those keys are so close together on my keyboard. :-)

A "Jig of sluts". Would that be a term akin to "flock of sheep" or "herd of elephants" John ?

George, I think you're confusing the two meanings of "venery."

First, apologies for the thread creep, and (in the light of current forum discussions about general smartass and ego-enhancing comments on a serious music thread) apologies to those who simply want an abc of the "Queen of Sluts." Here, by way of explanation of the punning above is a reference to a book I remember from some years ago: James Lipton, AN EXALTATION OF LARKS or THE VENEREAL GAME: The authentic terms of Venery.

And here, by way of atonement, is an abc for the tune in question.

(More apologies may be in order - I don't know if I need to add html line breaks to an abc file. I did add them, so if there's a problem there, all I can say is oops.)

Oops again, there should have been a rest at the end of the A part.

Oops yet again. Now I see that I not only needed to add the breaks the first time, but I needed to add them again; I can't just cut and paste from one post to another. So now I'm not only contributing to the delinquency of a thread by using it to show off my intellect and wit, I'm also using it to practice html.

Now that I've finally got hold of the tune, I see that Anglo has already taken care of it.  I may as well just add that it immediately follows Buttered Peas in Mike Raven's book, and that is possibly the reason for BanjoFlower's friends playing them together.  For what it's worth, I've put a midi of it at the  South Riding Folk Network  site:

Queen of Sluts (Midi)
