Help: One room Schoolhouse Music Books

On our recent visit to Colorado, we were able to see two one room schoolhouses; one which my father attended and which has been renovated, added onto and made into a lovely home; and, one which is still quite rustic and used for a hunting lodge.

Anyway, we had a discussion on our way back, if we had one and were to furnish it authentically, at least one portion of it, as a mini-museum, what would have been the standard music book for children of those times, say 1895-1930? In the Rocky Mountain West. Anyone know?

Thanks,

kat

I have a book printed in 1883& it seems to be a childrens musical primer titled "The Children's Glee-Book" by Palmer Hartsough & J.H. Fillmore it was published by Fillmore Bros., Publishers, Cincinnati, OH. My copy belonged to someone who put their name in it & dated it March 15 1901. But I have no idea where you could find another copy. I don't recognize any of the songs except some of the religeous songs. most of the songs are kinda cute. I don't know if that helps or no but I thought I would throw that out to you

I have a several song/choir books called the "Golden Book of Favorite Songs" (1927) "Blue Book of Favorite Songs"(1928), "Sociability Songs"(1942), "Twice 55 Plus"(no date) that my Dad used in Elk County Kansas in the '30's and '40's.

Given that we still have 3 operating one room schools within 30 miles of me I'm not sure about the "period" in question, (grin)

I have a very small collection of very old music classroom song books here at school:
Song-Land for Early Grades, Forty-three Sing-songs by Paul Bliss. No date given, but the inscription inside the cover reads 1932
The Progressive Music Series (for Basal Use) Silver Burdett and Co 1914 this still is a very popular publisher of music series. Very definitely a contender in your quest!
Introductory Music, Music Education Series, Ginn and Co, 1923 (Ginn has now merged with Silver Burdett!)

I hope these have helped you. I think I have a few others at home which I will check tonight. All of the ones listed here have the Keene NH School District stamp inside the cover, which tells me they were used here in the smallest city in Cow Hampshire. Why not in a one-room schoolhouse in Colorado?

Thanks, everyone! I had thought of Silver Burdett, as I've picked up a couple of them out here, so they would be a strong contender, I think. I am about to call my dad and ask him, too. Will let you know what he might remember.

Great stuff!
