Claremont, CA Folk Festival?

Hi all!

Information request, here.

After years of not being able to find much folk music in Southern California, I was recently introduced to a few websites, and found reference to the "Claremont Folk Festival".

Anyone been to it? Have information about it? Have (*gasp*) a link to a webpage that I haven't been able to find on it?

I know a local band is playing. I've seen other sites say they'll be there. I've seen mention of 'classes'. All I can't find is any actual information about the festival itself. Considering that the 'fest is NEXT FREAKIN' WEEKEND, I'm trying to figure out what is going on with it before I show up and find out it was invite only, costs $200 to get in, or other such silliness.

ANY helpful information is appreciated. Non-helpful information will be snickered at privately.

Thanks!

M

Try calling the Folk Music Center in Claremont. They will probably have all the info.

OK, I called the number and the deal is that you can buy tickets when you get there. It runs from 11 am to 6 pm both Sat & Sunday, although ther will be a Gospel sing at 10 am on Sunday.

I'm planning to go on Sunday, because one of my favorite bands "The Fenians" is playing at 2:45.

Cool! Thanks for the info...

I'm hoping to be able to make it... I'd be going in order to catch the Fenians show as well - want to pick up their new album...

If you go to the festival be sure to visit the "Village" of Claremont. From Larkin Park travel east 1 3/4 miles on Harrison Ave. The Folk Music Center is a great, really a museum of folk instruments.

Walk around the "Village" it's only about 5 square blocks, maybe drop by Walter's for a bite to eat.

I love the place but I'm biased, having grown-up there.

We have played this festival several times and even scheduled the concerts and workshops a couple of times. This was more than ten years ago but we don't think it has changed much.

It's a small, very informal festival with mostly the same performers from year to year. There are never any "big name" stars but the music and venue are both very good. There are lots of opportunities to talk to the performers and the laid-back atmosphere makes it a lot of fun to attend.

Will we need to bring a blanket or chairs to sit on? How 'bout a picnic?

WM, Is Dorothy Chase still running the Folk Music Center? If so, please give her greetings from me? Jean

Well, it was a lovely day today in Claremont. I tried my hand at playing a saw, heard some great parodies/protest songs heard "The Fenians", a wonderful band that takes trad Irish music and twists it a tad. Now that I have been, I will be better prepared. I didn't realize that Folk Fests were so ;-) interactive!

SeanM, you don't happen to drive a green Chevy S-10 do you? If you do, Keith and i were in the green Mazda parked behind you.

Unfortunately no... at the last moment I suffered a critical financial outflow failure (i.e., realized I was broke and couldn't make it out...)

Sounds like a wonderful time, though. Glad you enjoyed it!
