He will be in either the Westcliffe which is more or less the headquarters, or the Ailsa Craig where they play a fair bit of Irish music or the Southfield Hotel mostly unacompanied, I know you will enjoy it have a word with Tom he's a great singer but don't tell him I said so. Spent three great days and nights playing music with the Girvan Folk club in Girvans answer to Faulty Towers the Queen's Hotel. The folk club made us very welcome and we (Alan, Bud, Martin and myself) would just like to say thanks for the hospitality and craic. Hopefully see you in October for your next Folk festival weekend. (BTW, have not forgot about the Archie stuff, will PM you when it's in the post, so much to do, play, write, listen to, so little time). Great band, Mike Ward (ex Tannahill Weavers, Alba), Fiddle, Helen (Ex Blae na Gael)whistle, Pasty,(?Glenfiddoch fiddle champion) + vocalist, guitarist & piper, and they also added a clarsach player to the lne up, whom they met on Saturday morning. By Saturday night they were introducing him as a new band member, so they may be a seven peice by now. Good blend of song and tunes, both sensitive and driving, nice way with the crowd, no airs and graces about them, and were great to work with. I can't recommend them highly enough. I've no personal axe to grind, know Mike and Helen to say hello to, from being on the same bill with them in the past. My advice, GUEST, howya, is to book them while you can still afford them, they could easily go on to be headliners at Celtic Conections or any other festival in a year or so. love, john. |

They played with us in the Queens hotel after they had finished their sessions on both Sat and Sun nights(up to 3.00am). As GUEST,Dita said above book them quick. I did ask around for you, Dita, but didn't know your last name and accosted several people asking if they were you who didn't know what Mudcat was and they got very confused. Congrats to you guys who won in trad singing and songwriting - loved the version of Wild Rover. I entered the traditional singing competition because when I came in the room at 11:00, when the competition was supposed to start they said they only had one applicant and needed more. Then lots of folks signed up and I was getting pretty nervous and wishing I hadn't picked a Scottish song to sing in front of a bunch of Scots. I was glad I did it, however, as it broke the ice and a lot of singers came up and talked with me afterward and some of them taught me songs. What a great festival! I came over with seven musicians from Northern Ireland and spent most of the time at informal sessions - that's why I didn't spot you, Dita, when you MC'd. Hope it won't be the last Girvan Festival I attend. |

I met the musicians in Northern Ireland (all from County Antrim) in a Traditional Music Club over the internet. They very kindly invited me to accompany them to Girvan! All of them play traditional music and go to sessions regularly, but I couldn't tell you where exactly. We had two bodhran players, banjo, two fiddles, flute and mandolin. I do play a bit of guitar but not near enough to keep up with these guys. I had to confine myself to a bit of singing! We all stayed at the Westcliffe but played quite a lot at the Ailsa Craig and the Harbour Pub. As you can see I'm willing to travel quite a long way for good music and was not disappointed in Girvan! |

Five of us went over to Girvan three guitars one flute/whistle and one bodhran. We would be 70% song the rest tunes. I had two friends staying in the Westcliffe Mervyn and Steve both fiddle players. The club I belong to on Yahoo is called - imaginatively enough - Traditional Irish Music Club. Just get on Yahoo and click on clubs - you'll find it. It was actually through someone I met in that club that I ended up going to Girvan with the group. If you hung around Steve and Mervyn you must have seen me - the red headed American woman! I think we actually spent more time at Ailsa Craig and Harbour Pub than we did at the Westcliffe, although we were staying there. Our group was mainly instrumental but every now and then there was a song. What instrument do you play? |

13 May 01 - 03:36 PM (#461505) Subject: RE: BS: Anyone for Girvan this weekend From: GUEST,Mike Hi Maryrrf We visited the Westcliffe on Sat morning (about 11am) Steve, Mervyn and a crowd (couple of bodhran players, couple of flutes, banjo etc) had a session going in the top end of the back room of the bar behind the pillars. We sat down at the toilets end of the room had a cup of coffe and listened for a while. It was a good tight session. We left and later called into the side bar of the Ailsa Craig for our tea, guess what Steve and Mervyn had another session going. We sat the other side of the snooker/pool table and had our tea. Steven and Mervyn left the session and went for a chip. A few young woman joined the session one had a backpack on another carrying what looked like a flute case. Would you have been one of these girls? We finsihed tea and when back to our hotel (the Queens - just over the road from the Ailsa Craig to start our evening session. We do play traditional music but are more into traditional folk/folk singing. Mervyn is actually playing with us later this month. I sing, play bodhran, tin whistle and for the past year I've been learning/fighting with traditional flute. My jigs and reels are played at half the speed Steve plays them. The young flute player in his crowd is a fantastic player. Thanks for the info on the yahoo clubs I'll visit them later. My lift has just arrived to take me to the Sunday night session in the Londenderry Arms Hotel up in Carnlough. Mike

Get on Yahoo which is www.yahoo.com (I don't know if it has to be Yahoo USA but I doubt it.) Click on Clubs. There is an area where you can search for club topics. Type in Traditional Irish Music. It should be the first club that comes up. When you pull it up you will see an Irish flag as the logo (that's the logo at present, anyway). Maybe you will liven that club up a little bit because it's been very boring lately!!! |

My Family flew out on Monday to Miami to DisneyWorld for three weeks, I have a phobia about flying so I didn't go. I'll miss the pleasure of the holiday but have the pain of paying for it.
