Even at 55 mph that is quite a crunch. Ironic but true it is not the CPU nor Memory not even speed that has squished MS but the lowly telephone wire. Then when that gets upgraded, maybe by 2099 lol, they will then be dealing with Multimedia and not databases for corporoworld. But then by that time the nasty Peguin will be ahead of them in this arena too. Multimedia technology evolves faster than MS would like but hey why make a device that needs SW to get done what can be Hardwired into it cheaper? Besides this way is faster and far better. Mutiltasking managers /os/ and generic widgets, you can make yer own or dowload other hobby programmers stuff. Yup the party is over, MS is the only one who seems not to know. Older versions of Winderz are creating problems too since when made MS was still looking at the rapid HW growth curve, meanwhile nothing much happened. The 2000 winderz for example is MAC on a PC for example but then if you do a lot of wordprcoessing would you need to upgrade? OSR2 has all the bells and whistles you'd need. Then there was Netscape which still causes serious sales shortfall, I mean why would anyone need MS Word when they have Netscape? Big Blue gets even, after years of being a joke at MS Big Blue is about to erradicate MS off the face of the earth with a slam blam hot version of Linux already installed on their PC. If Linux continues to outperform winderz as it has in the past then Big Blue could be onto something. Buy more Microware - don't think so. Buy Linux - yup, my next PC will be IBM Linux. |

I do understand that with some jigging almost any program can be ported over, but I draw the line at "Well, all you have to do is open the .exe source, change lines 2, 47, 690, 1345, 8999 and twenty others to read these incredibly long strings, recompile, go back in and change the resultant value changes to this (but not THAT, or it crashes your computer and you need to re-install), then change two lines back but I forget which ones, and you're done! Know what you mean too, Linux can be soooo hard to get going NOT. Actualy if you are buying a new PC some Stores now sell Linpop already inside and these DO have full Audio/Video preinstalled. No problemo, actually my area is Audio driver configs in Linworld and believe me it works far far better than Microripoff. Just one thing alone out performs Winderz by 101% - stabiblity, Linderz does not crash. The reason why it is so stable is how Ram is used. Winderz uses Ram like a pig does food, on the floor, no problem, in another hog's butt no problem - see hacking and ports - in the feed store two blocks down, no problem. Linderz is totaly different where each pig is secured in a concrete bunker with a pipe down it's neck and another out the other end. Memory is locked into seperate Systems. Each can be a client or server to the other Systems in the machine, that is why it is so difficult to hack into a Linbox. The Admin can make everything in any or all 'Consoles' blanks if they so choose. It is also why one application can lock up the screen and you can press F2 to open the next. In that one you simply run netstat to find the Process Number of the Locked program and simply issue the Kill 'proggy no' command. This is why most Universities are now migrating to Linux - You can test to lock any application and not reboot! It not whether Winderz is at the end of the line but rather when. BTW MS cannot now jump into Linworld and rip that off like they did the MAC since they would be sued out of existence by the OPEN SOURCE community. Buy Microsoft - hardly think so - like I already said I have MSBugware to give away - hey you need MS 32 OS?

Once again - I DO appreciate that it's more stable and has less loopholes than MS. HOWEVER, that still doesn't get around the problem that for what I like to do on a computer, there is little to no support for the OS. I ran Mac for a while, and eventually gave up for the same reasons. For some people, Linux answers all their needs, and they can rightly be said to be perfectly happy with their (to them) superior OS. For others, MacOS is the same. I am left by default as a Windows user, as a) it's easy, b) it's what is on almost every computer that you get and I'm not skilled enough to strip to bare earth and rebuild (even if I had reason), and c) None of the games and few of the apps that I use have Linux support, and why would I want to drop another $1200 for a Linux version of Adobe Photoshop when I just got the one I have for Windows? It's not a holy crusade against Gates... It's merely the unfortunate (and that's mildly debatable) side effect of having an industry standard that doesn't believe that quality is the main purpose... You can have your Penguin. I want my RollerCoaster Tycoon, Dreamweaver, Adobe, and the like. M |
