Seeking American songs for July fourth

Did a forum and Digitrad search using "patriotic and American" and only came up with political threads. Heck. I am invited to sing or play for a July fourth celebration and the music has to be American, preferably from the time period surrounding the declaration of independence. I have a gal willing to sing harmony with me a'cappella, so have you any ideas? Margo

Margo, there are quite a few listed at Contemplator, which if I remember correctly is a website of a Mudcatter. (Sorry, I cannot remember his name, right now, Barry, maybe?)

Sounds like fun. Good luck,

kat

Just remembered! Barry Taylor!!

Margo-

If you do a search for @patriotic, or @America @Revolution you'll get a couple of hundred hits. The @ indicates that it's a keyword: a descriptive word that probably doesn't appear in the lyrics.

The second-favorite (after Yankee Doodle) Revolutionary War song with the troops was a hymn tune called Chester. Despite that it's called a hymn, it's nationalistic and warlike. Should be in the DT. If not, let me know and I'll post it. I recommend it.

Yup, it's there.

But whoever posted it doesn't know how to spell "reigns".

One of you could read the fairly fascinating written story about the writing of the StarSpangledBanner, then both perform all the verses. Didn't cranky yankee post that?

The Sacred Harp & other old shape note books have mostly hymns, but a few are early federal partiotic songs:

Ode on Science by Jezaniah Sumner, 1798
Liberty by Stephen Jenks, 1800.
The American Star D. P. White, 1850.

If you try those first two, one of you should sing the melody on the middle line & the other pick one of the harmony lines.

I thought I was the one asking for forgiveness! All is fine. I promise to try not to find my name hidden in vague references in the future.

From: Chicken Charlie

"Burgoyne Surrounded" is to tune of "Girl I Left Behind Me." "Burgoyne Surrounded" is also an American quilt pattern.

When Jack the King's commander bold would go & do his duty
He smiled & bowed to all the crowd, and every bloomin' beauty.
The Lower House were mute as mouse to hear the grand oration
And all the Peers with loudest cheers proclaimed him to the nation.

Then off he goes to Canada and to Ticonderoga,
And quitting those, away he goes, straightway to Saratoga.
"Sons of Freedom" gathered round where hostile foes abounded,
And when he feign would turn his back he found himself surrounded.

In vain he fought, in vain he fled, and duly made a tender:
To save the rest, he thought it best his forces to surrender.
May America's brave sons in honor be rewarded,
And be the fate of all her foes the same as thus recorded!

A great American patriotic song is "The House I Live In." I haven't looked in the DT for it, but I'd be surprised if it's not there.
