I just heard this on the news as I drove to work. He had a sudden heart attack. He is best known for the sccience fiction book series Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.

Well geez...........I feel absolutely awful. A wonderful imagination with a warped sense of humor.......I've loved his work for years, top of my favs list..........so now maybe he knows the question that takes us beyond 42. He had the most wonderful way of describing things (almost exactly totally unlike tea).

Wow... really bad news. This guy's work was an instrumental part of my adolesence, helping to form my love of humour and good books. Some friends and I would gather round the T.V. to watch the re-runs of the T.V. series on BBC2... getting drunk to Hitch Hikers Guide....

One of Adam's unfinished projects from years ago was a joint production with Jim Henson. It was to be a childrens show using the Muppets and the subject was compuers; what they are, how they work. Jim Henson had been very impressed with Adams and the two had decided to work on the project collaboratively. The script writers workoing on theproject had a great deal of fun working with Adams but not enough of the material that resulted met either Henson's or Adams standards and they gave up.

I was disappointed. It seemed like such a good match. WIth creative projects, sometimes, you just can't tell what will work out and what won't.

On radio 4 recently I heard a couple of the parts of a series he made on how technology might progress in the future; he seemed so passionate about the ideas and it is so sad that he did not live long enough to see if his predictions were correct. Have you got hankies ready? Anything you'd like to talk to me about to do with my stuff. I'll try to answer any questions I can understand.

Hope his death doesn't mean some film company will get the rights to his material and hack it to bits

He was working on Digital Media in Hollywood so yes they already have his ideas, and who will claim their genesis. It was a Big screen version of the HHGTTG - says the BBC.
How I remember the first radio series. heard it twice per week then it got repeated again almost immediately because of it's popularity. The TV series lost none of the imagination, just not enough of it. All because Douglas insisted on being involved. Whoever champions the cause of the film I want to see it. His genius was well respected so I have hopes.

This is really sad. My kids grew up loving his works as we introduced them to them. Way too damn young and nothing for it but to hope his works live on and that his vision remains intact in whatever "they" do with them. Thanks for letting us know.

Many years ago a friend of mine who was studying philosophy handed me a book telling me that I had to read it, it is the greatest philisophical work of the twentieth century. The book was the Hitchhikers Guide. Well, I can't remember ever having laughed so hard at a book. I went on to read all the books in the "Trilogy". At the time I didn't see where my buddy was coming from with the philosophy comment, but I re-read it again and I now see his point. Zaphod, Marvin, Arthur, Elvis, the Vogons. Hilarious yet brilliant stuff.

Mr. Adams, you'll be missed.

I met him years ago at a public radio producers workshop -- just as Hitchhiker's was being put on NPR. He was nuts. I've not often seen a mind that worked so fast and could make me laugh so hard with just a facial expression or an intonation -- a truly gifted man. Friendly, open in a very non-British way, and easy to talk to despite his celebrity -- which he thought was total rubbish. He wrote for the fun of it and his mind was not easily stilled.

I have been listening to the radio tapes of Hitchhiker for some years now, and so has my teenage daughter. Its familiarity has soothed me to sleep many times. I also have HMS Titanic, which is a Terry Jones book from an idea by Douglas Adams.

No rescue by improb drive this time, I'm afraid.

I spent my convalescence reading HHGTTG, and the rest, put my recovery back by a week it did!! And I have the CD's sitting here on my desk right now, the brilliant BBC radio productions..... Such a shame that the news article mentions every HHG book except 'Mostly Harmless'. That was, IMHO, one of the most poignant pieces of writing ever, when Arthur finally gets the hang of his lifestyle.

Bit of a crappy weekend all round really. Long dark teatime isn't really in it. Not even the Vogons could do something this bad.

I was doing OK, saddened but taking it "like a man" until I heard the obituary on National Public Radio's Weekend Edition (US radio).

Oh, where will we turn for our light hearted look at Life, The Universe, and Everything? I will have to dig out the tapes and the books and reread and relisten to them again to remember the wonderfully zany and deeply philosophical ramblings of that cast of characters.

To take this into the realm of music, I always thought the wonderful banjo piece that they used as the theme for the show had to be Bela Fleck but it wasn't. Who was it?

One of my professors in college used to play the BBC Radio tapes of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy when we were working on scenery bulding on the weekends, I was intrigued by it and he made me tapes of all the shows. I wonder if I still have them. I always preferred the radio show to the books and the TV show.

And so passes a creative spirit from the world that influenced me a great deal over the years. I loved his uniquely warped sense of humor and novel use of language from the very first time I heard Hitchhikers broadcast on the radio. His writing has been a significant inspiration for me over the years and, recently, my set of tapes of the original HHGTTG BBC broadcast served as irrestible bait in meeting the love of my life (and thereby hangs a tail! Ahem! - tale).

Farewell Douglas! I will miss you! And if you still had some unfinished business in this world, and you're ever looking for a place to hang out and go bump in the night, come on over to my house. I'll open the beer for you...

BTW, at least one version of the HHGTTG theme song was done by the Eagles (!) - the tune was called Journey of the Sorceror, I think, and was on the One of These Nights Album. I don't if this was original Eagles material or not.

Believe it or don't the theme music was " The journey of the Sorcerer" by the Eagles from the album "One of these Nights" And it sounds slightly odd because the technician origianlly started the tape off slow, noticed a few bars into the piece and pushed the speed back up to normal. In the end they decided they liked it and kept it in.

On more than one occasion as a child and an adult I'd go to sleep listening to the tapes my brother made of the original series ( way before they finally brought them out on tape commercially ) he was worried enough to make master copies, which turned out to be wise, as I frequently wore tapes out.

I can't believe he's gone. I think I need the anti-depressents in Roosta's towel.

I'll raise a glass of the old Janx spirit and try not cry too hard into my copies of the scripts.

In the mid-eighties I spent a week in hospital with possible heart problems. I was feeling miserable, when a visiting colleague brought me a copy of Douglas Adams' The Meaning of Liff, which gives alternative meanings for British placenames. Everytime I felt miserable, I read another page, then lay there pissing myself with laughter. I stopped reading at that point - I thought I'd have a heart attack if I carried on! He turned a bad week into a hoot. My heart problem turned out to be due to too much coffee - I wish his was as well.

During my son's Black Tee Shirt days, when he was surly and pretty much emotionally unavailable much of the time, Doug Adams' quirky humanity kept us connected by providing common ground and a basis for communication. This is sad news, but look at what a huge contribution he made during his too-brief time here. Would that we all could use our light so splendidly during our round-trip visit to this planet.

I even used in him sales training to illustrate a point. Remeber that though 42 was the answer, no one except the super computer knew what it meant because they had failed to ask the right question. All selling is based on the ability to ask questions and not to be deterred if you get an answer you cna't deal with of don't understand.....there is always another question.

Reading this thread it's obvious he had a lot of fans among us here. Almost every post has douglas Adams catch phrase and often several. Are you all as amazed as I am at the number of things we now say almost daily which come from his work?

The Douglas Adams phrase that I use most is "Somebody Else's Problem field".

I once cited Adams' work in university when I was doing a project on the case for Christ's resurrection - it was from one of the Dirk Gently books, about how the impossible can be easier to believe than the extremely improbable.

Along with the collected works of Monty Python and the movie The Princess Bride, the Hitchhiker's Guide is one of the most quotable works in the all-too-narrow world of exquisite silliness. I just finished the Douglas Adams computer game, called Starship Titanic. The very end of the game is a video of Douglas playing the part of one of the characters. It was published in 1998 and he looks very sick in the video.

The character says some things like "my life is over, my work is done" and that he is going fishing. In hindsight it is a fitting tribute.

I guess you're right, Clinton. How silly of me. The video quality wasn't wonderful, so it was a bit hard to tell. It was mainly around his eyes that made him look sick, dark circles etc

I have the music stuck in my head now. It was clever use of music throughout the game, I thought. Did you notice that there were three levels of orchestration in the lift, as you go past each passenger class level: first class = full(ish) orchestration, 2nd class = a slightly less orchestrated version, and SGT class = piano arrangement.

I thought that the music room stuff was clever too - using a mixing panel idea, and hearing the differences in the music depending on what the sound levels were.

I read an
interview with DA and he mentioned that Terry Jones considers the parrot to be his best character role.
