Help: Sharkfin picks

Does anyone know where I can buy proper Sharkfin picks in the Yorkshire (U.K.)area. The real thing, made by LANDSTROM in Sweden. I've tried everywhere I can think of, without success. I keep getting offered the copies made by Jim Dunlop, and others. I love the crispness of the White Sharkfins and have used them for years. I clip them down with nail clippers when they get worn, but you can't do that so many times. Also while I'm on the subject, Any suppliers for Alaska picks? I might as well throw this one in too. Ball end Mandolin strings. Where available? NOT Redwing, they are awful (I broke 16 during Whitby Folk week two years ago!!! None last year on my old Mandolin),and they're all that's offered locally. Cheers, Tony(mandomad)

Tony, the only place I could think of would be Elderley Instruments in Lansing Mitchigan USA. It is the only place I know of who keep left handed thumb picks. I think their website is elderley.com but Big Mick would know better than me.

Hi Tony

You can usually get individual ball-end strings in any gauge in guitar shops, usually Ernie Balls or Rotosound. I know they would be long for mandolin, but would they do? It's loop ends I can't get locally.

I don't have any problem with Redwings on the bouzouki. They sound fine and the next one I break will be the first (although I seldom break strings on any of my instruments).

Elderly's website is elderly.com.

See you at the Jug,
Les

Cheers Bill & Les, Yes, I'll try those options, altho' buying individual strings does make it rather more expensive. Les, It's the way I play(call me Mr thrash/punk of the mandolin), plus I had some problems with the set up of the Crafter mandolin I'd just bought. (It's o.k. when plugged in tho'.) I wonder if Landstrom Sharkfin are still in business? Thanks...

Waste of a good shark. Or an inconvenience to one, anyway.

A Google search got about 120 results including this UK site, but it may be a long way from you:

Guitar accessories

However, here is a cool little site about picks in general:

Pic Dic

No Spaw(!), although I have seen picks shaped like that.

You can easily pop out the ball from ball end strings;see
http://www.frets.com/FRETSPages/Musician/Strings/Loops/loops.html

If you have settled on a set you like, you could order a bunch of singles from a wholesaler, or a net source!
