Jul 01 - 02:10 PM (#507819) Subject: RE: Sorcha Dorcha becomes a dotcom! From: Suffet Just a word of thanks to three outstanding musicians. Among the guest artists at the Woody Guthrie Birthday Bash in New York City last night (July 15, 2001) were Larry Otway, Gina Tlamsa, and Eric Levine, three members of Sorcha Dorcha. From the little I know of Irish Gaelic, the name is oxymoronic, meaning something like Bright Darkness. Anyway, Larry, Gina, and Eric first performed "Plane Wreck at Los Gatos Canyon" ("Deportees") like we have never heard it done before. On the second go-around of the round robin, they held the audience spellbound with "Amadou Diallo," Larry's original composition about the African immigrant who was gunned down in a hail of 41 police bullets as he stood in the vestibule of his own apartment building. If Larry, Gina, and Eric are any indication of what the entire group is like, then Sorcha Dorcha is a band worth hearing again and again. --- Steve |

Jul 01 - 03:19 AM (#508350) Subject: RE: Sorcha Dorcha becomes a dotcom! From: BlueJay OK, please forgive my confusion. I've never heard Sorcha Dorcha, but I have seen many references to the band. We also have a Mudcat member, Sorcha, who I believe lives in Wyoming. But if memory serves me, Sorcha Dorcha seems to be a New York band. Any connection other than the name? I would love to hear Sorcha Dorcha's music, but when I clicked on the link that Spaw provided, all I got was a photo, (which took about two minutes to load), with no links to sound samples or where I might purchase a CD. Is this correct? I'd love to get a CD, just based on what I've read. But if Sorcha Dorcha is really a dot.com, as the title of this thread states, then I should be able to get a CD online. Does the band have a homepage I am not aware of? Thanks for your patience with a dangerously semi-computer literate old fart. BlueJay |

From: 2 in harmony Having heard one Guthrie song and a Larry original performed by 3 members of Sorcha Dorcha I can't wait to hear all of Sorcha Dorcha. Live would be great! Tell us when and where. Being new to your music I am curious about why such wonderful musicians with many unusual instruments has been getting banned. I'm sure there will be an interesting answer to this naive question even if it's not on this thread. |

Jul 01 - 04:27 PM (#511465) Subject: RE: Sorcha Dorcha becomes a dotcom! From: InOBU OH! That was actually a serrious question!!! Well, point of fact, we are generally pretty well accepted. We do music that is in some degree controversal, but as it is not mean spirited we have only been heckled once about one of our songs, and the audience told the guy to shut up. On the other hand, we do have troble keeping musicians who are worried that the civil rights message of some of the music will stp them from realizing their dream of becoming Bono (Sonny or the other guy) I have to keep this all short as I can't find my glasses, so I am having diffculty seeing my fingers. Cheers Larry |

Jul 01 - 12:26 PM (#512011) Subject: RE: Sorcha Dorcha becomes a dotcom! From: Suffet Jessica, I second the thought! When I first became involved in folk music as a child I did not differentiate between the topical-political ("protest") music and the traditional. They were all in the same mix. And the people whom I listened to back then -- Pete Seeger, Oscar Brand, Theodore Bikel, Harry Belafonte, Woody Guthrie, Cisco Houston, Leadbelly, the Weavers -- didn't differntiate between them very much, either. Later, I continued to listen to many singers whose repertoires were an eclectic mix of the topical-political, the traditional, and the what-not. These included Peggy Seeger, Ewan MacColl, Joan Baez, Odetta, Bonnie Dobson, and quite a few others. Only much later did I notice the divergence bewteen what I had long considered the two sides of the one big beautiful gold coin I knew as folk music. I am happy to see folks like Larry Otway are busy rejoining the two strands. More power to them! --- Steve |
