Old Radical Songs from the 50's

Anybody like me, who was a (sort of) 1950's radical, should take a look at Socialist Songbook, published by the Young People's Socialist League (Schactmanites, who were an odd cross between Trotzkyists and humanitarians).

There are references in some of the threads to the "Bosses Songbook." Which has lots of good satire. Including the "Ballad of Pete Seeger," which I suspect will get me in trouble here, but what the heck?! All those good songs, including Cloakmamer's Union [sic] from our very own DT, is there!

Click here to get to the main page of the Socialist Songbook. You'll find lots of information on radical songs of the 60's at http://www.bestofbroadside.com.

Thanks for the post Toadfrog, and thanks for the main page link Joe O. I got the Broadside Book/CDs at the turn of the year and I can't recommend it highly enough. It is a real joy to listen to, to read, in fact just to hold. A labour of love it must have been.
love, john.

What a hoot. Thanks Toadfrog. Always wanted the full lyrics to "Which Side Are You On" and now I know where to look.

Here's a song from the same era that a friend from SF sang me to a well known classical tune whose name eludes me this morning:

WE ARE STUDENTS, WE ARE WORKERS
(Anon. circa 1960's)

We are students, we are workers,
We produce the wealth you see,
But the master class conspires
To keep us all in slavery.

Toiling millions, embrace one another,
To Hell with favors from above,
They will rue the day when we
Raise our red flag of liberty.

Charley: That looks like it would fit Beethoven's "Ode to Joy" from the 9th symphony.

Seems to me some of these were well before the 50's though.

This is a great thread. Thanks for starting it, toadfrog.

If I weren't so financially challenged right now, I'd spring for that 5 CD collection. That looks absolutely amazing.

Thanks for the work folks. I personally am tiring a little of the new songs in the key of ME and would like a little balance.

Sorry Ian, I don't see that particular section under Genres. Am I not looking in the right place?

No, but it's quite a long way down and I forgot to put the entry in the title (try doing a search on Socialist if you can't find it. ;-)
