18 May 01 - 04:36 PM (#465826) Subject: Help!! I have song caught in my head From: GUEST,J Ryan I was watching a movie recently and heard a song that is now caught in my head. I only have a few lyrics and have tried to find out on my own. The lyrics are as follows: Sippin Napolean Brandy and not get your lips wet. This is one line I hear over and over. If anyone knows the artist and has the lyrics this would be helpful. I can tell you it sounds like a male singing and has very little instrumental accompanyment. Its definately a 60's song and has the british folk sound also. Thanks for your help if you know the song. Thank you Jeff Ryan |

18 May 01 - 06:59 PM (#465923) Subject: RE: Help!! I have song caught in my head From: Mark Cohen By the way, Joe actually sez to post lyrics and links for "folk" songs but just links for non-folk. Either way is fine with me, and who's to say what may be folk in the future? I actually think anything that was on AM radio from 1965-69 qualifies as folk music. Anybody ever read Mark Twain's story, "Punch, Brothers, Punch"? It's about getting something stuck in your head like that. "Punch, brothers, punch with care. Punch in the presence of the passenjare!" And I seem to recall a science fiction story about a society of telepaths, where people actually BOUGHT songs to stick in their heads so as to interfere with mindreaders. Ring any bells with anyone? Awesome work, Metchosin--five minutes!! Aloha, Mark |

18 May 01 - 09:14 PM (#465987) Subject: RE: Help!! I have song caught in my head From: Ebbie A psychologist friend of mine says that putting Yankee Doodle into your head works- that no one obsessively sings YD so you have to keep putting it in. In the process, any other tunes are crowded out. In my experience, it works. Yesterday morning I woke with 'good night, good night, good night; Oh, I bid you good night, good night, good night' running repetitively through my head- near drove me bonkers. Put in Yankee Doodle and though for awhile the next line came up Good night, good night, etc, it wasn't long before my brain gave up. My brain can only handle so much. Ebbie |

I have song caught in my head From: catspaw49 Malcolm, that's an excellent point although I don't fault Metchosin for doing it from her knowledge....and she sure was fast! I average about one a day of the lyrics requests that I manage not to be beat by Sorcha on. The first place to look is the DT AND FORUM SEARCH. Probably in about 40% of the ones I look for, either the lyrics or some other info are posted here and the DT/Forum Search Engine does a fine job. I wish there was a way to alert our guests (not to mention our members) that they should use that engine first! In any case, still a great job Mets! Spaw |

Thanks, Bill...I first read that in high school, in Charles Neider's collection of Twain's essays, and I couldn't get off the floor for at least an hour. It's wonderful to find out how it came to be in the form he immortalized. One of my other all-time favorites is "The Awful German Language": "I once heard a university student from Heidelberg say he would rather decline two drinks than one German adjective." So, does anybody know the science fiction story I mentioned, where people buy tunes to put into their heads? Aloha, Mark |

I have song caught in my head From: Mark Cohen That's OK, Matt, for at least 40 years, when I've been preoccupied with some task, I'll find myself humming "Hail to the Chief"! I have no idea why. I'm pretty sure that the first time I heard that song played, it was for Eisenhower. For the non-Yanks, "Hail to the Chief" is traditionally played for the arrival of the US President at some state occasion (when there happens to be a band present). Aloha, Mark |

I have song caught in my head From: Grab For some reason, Chris Rea's "Auberge" is my marching song - whenever I'm off walking on my own, I always end up singing it to myself to keep my feet going. I don't mind it, but it'd be nice to get something else to add some variety instead of just keeping on humming the patented Chris-Rea-Riff over and over. Incidentally, the German word is "Ohrwurm" (meaning earwig) according to various links on Google. Graham. |

I've heard it done very up-tempo, but also in a more gentle, quiet way, and am interested in comparing recorded versions. Can you please tell me where you know it from, and whom you've heard perform it? Thanks in advance. MMB (mmbryan@tampabay.rr.com). |
