Mudcat Pledge Drive - Will Mudcat Survive 2

19 May 01 - 03:14 PM (#466320)
Subject: MUDCAT PLEDGE DRIVE-Will Mudcat Survive2
From: catspaw49

Before we start a Permathread on the various ways you can help support Mudcat, I thought we would be better off to continue this "Pledge Drive" on a separate thread. The original thread is located HERE-"Will Mudcat Survive" Take a minute and read through it.

SOME IMPORTANT POINTS FROM THE OTHER THREAD---You are not required in any way to pledge anything! There is no membership fee at the 'Cat and there never should be. Otherwise we would not serve our purpose and visitors wouldn't be asking for help...and often becoming members in the process. Membership is FREE!

But Max supports this site out of his own pocket and though some of us kick in some money now and then, it doesn't cover the cost. As you can read in the other thread in Max's message, were Mudcat to stand alone, it would cost about $400.00 per month. Mudcat gets a percentage of everything sold at it's sponsor sites IF we use the "Support the Mudcat" logo to access them.....that's the catfish jumping out of the banjo at the top of the page...just click it. Sandy Paton at Folk Legacy and Dick Greenhaus at Camsco also participate. This all adds up but it should be the icing on the cake. To be sure the cake is here to ice, we need a guaranteed $400/month to Max.

People need to understand, that while water itself is free, we still have to pay for the sanitation and the plumbing to put it into our taps. It is ludicrous that Max should have to bankrupt himself for an ideal that so many, many people are sharing in and deriving pleasure from. Time to ante up.

Do you need to pledge? Of course not. However, if you can see your way clear to come up with One dollar a month........Three dollars a month........Five, Ten, Fifteen, or Twenty a month....PLEDGE THAT YOU WILL SEND THAT AMOUNT TO MUDCAT CENTRAL!!! You can pay monthly, quarterly,annually....JUST MAKE THE PLEDGE AND FOLLOW THROUGH!!!!!

I have had a number of PM's from 'Catters saying they will pledge but don't want the dollar amount or perhaps their names made public.....That's just fine!!! for some of you, you may want to just post to this thread with $$$ signs only. The amount is between you and Max. JUST MAKE THE PLEDGE!!!!!!!! We're tired of the bi-monthly things to score a few bucks....I think we're all tired of that..........SO LET'S JUST DO IT!!!! Make a pledge of any amount per month (others already have....see the other thread)be it from One to Twenty per month....or even more if you actually have it. Let's just make this a one-time thing (until nest year) and we will all know the 'Cat will be available and free for all to use.

So let's cough it up......get the gelt to Mudcat!!! Plus, you'll feel good for doing it!

PLEDGING TO MUDCAT IS LIKE PISSING IN VELVET UNDERWEAR............YOU GET A WARM, FUZZY, FEELING!!!

And now back to our big feature, "The Virtues of Blowing Up A Possum's Ass."

Anyway, I'll pledge to continue my support, and attempt to increase it to boot!

Some questions have come up regarding payment procedures from overseas or on-line accounts and the secure server. We'll work them all out and post the info and PM it als if needed.

MAKE YOU PLEDGE AND WE"LL WORK IT OUT!

If you're comfortable with giving a dollar figure, please do so and don't be embarassed at a dolla am month! It's all important!!! It all adds up. If not, just the $ will do.

AT THIS POINT I FIGURE WITH THE PM'S AND ALL WE SHOULD BE UP TO $1800.00!!!!!!!! FAR OUT HUH????

Well, geez, Spaw, I was gonna use that plumbing analogy from a generous anonymous Mudcatter who wants to keep it private, BUT ya beat me to it! Good thing though.

Now, where do you send your checks/cheques?:

Mudcat Cafe
5 West Gay Street, Suite A
West Chester, PA 19389 USA

OR,

Click on the fish jumping outta the banjo and scroll down for a link to the Secure Server.

OR,

Call Max at 610.738.9050

And, THANKS!! Now...watch this next program...you'll want to be sure to order your own video of....The Strange Case of the Albert Hansell, Steamship OR Spaceship?!

To answer Jande's question about a Mudcat account to have direct deposits go in from our own online accounts. From my experience, one doesn't need a specific account at Mudcat to deposit to. If you look at my posting about online banking in the other thread, I explain how you can just go to your online banking service and put Mudcat in as a Payee, then set the amount and frequency of payments and your bank will automatically send out a check to Mudcat at those times your indicate, in the amount you tell them. You just have to remember to deduct it every month from your bank account!:-)

Hope that helps,

kat

Amergin just had a great suggestion...besides this pledging of consistent donations, we can also think about offering something, like PBS does, for certain amounts, i.e. a cap for $15, mug for $10...NOW, I realise we don't all have caps and mugs, BUT as individuals we do have other things, like CDS, etc. so....as another way to bring in more icing, let's think about this, too, without taking away from this BLAST FOR CASH at the moment.

I just want to add my 2 cents to what Spaw and kat have said.

The amount you pledge or send in a lump sum is of no interest to anyone. If you agree that you derive a lot of pleasure, and learn a lot by usinging the Mudcat, you owe it to yourself to support it.

This isn't a campaign started by Max. It was started by some members that responded to a thread that was posed, I believe (and forgive me if I'm wrong) by Lonesome E. J.

He had heard Max utter an aside that because his business was not doing well, it might be difficult to keep the Mudcat going. All of the background is covered in that thread, and I won't repeat it here.

The amount required to ensure Mudcat's continued existence is very modest when you think about it. We only have to raise $4,800 and if a majority of mudcatters respond, it won't require a burdensome donation on any one person's part.

Pledge today, will you? Or send Max a check at the address listed in kat's posting above.

Thanks!

DougR

One last comment: when we have reached our $4,800 goal, this thread can disappear (and all like it), and you won't see it again until this time next year!

OK, sign me up for $10/month, payable quarterly. I've just asked for my online banking service to add Mudcat as a payee and will transmit my 1st quarter payment as soon as that happens (or will snail mail a check if there's any snafu). Thanks, Max for Mudcat and thanks to the pledge drive organizers for keeping this in front of us in a much less intrusive way than my local NPR station.

And, 'Spaw, the 'permathread' thing to keep the support options in front of us is a great idea too. Although I was aware of the option to click on various sales sites through Mudcat (and have done so on numerous occasions) I was unaware of Bron's CD until now. It's be good to know of ways we can support Mudcat and feed our habit as well.

Peaked caps. YEAH BABY !!!! All us bald guys need peaked caps. GOTTA HAVE ONE !!! I was going to order some Tshirts, but if baseball type caps are on the way, hold the phone !!!

As well, if Max can somehow set it up, or one of the Canucks can, A.J.M. Headwear of Canada makes excellet hats. I use their hats for my company and get a local company to silk screen them. Perhaps one of the Canucks of good standing can offer them within Canada so we don't have to fiddle with all the extra charges, duty and BS ?

I'm going to try to quiet down now, and go back to my usual, reserved self. It's not too good when gnus get excited, especially after imbibing too many brews while watching Team Canada trounce the Eagles 19 to 10 in the Pan-Ameriacn Rugby Championships. Paraguay is next !

I'm in for my pledge, a calendar ( even though I THINK it gets delivered as an email file which I have to print out on my crappy, six year old printer, right ? .. never really understood how it worked ) a tee shirt, and at least several caps - if we can work out this Canadian "contribution" to the effort.

Thanks, SPAW!

My partner and I are just figuring out what we can afford. We had planned to review our finances this weekend anyway, so this is good timing...

Down, Gnu, Down, boy'o! **BG** No hats, at this point. Just cash...yours and anyone else's! Good suggestions, but for later on, that icing on the cake Spaw mentioned awhile back. Please don't hesitate to get a calendar AND a T-shirt, AND Bron's CD....call Max, he can work it out with Canajun francs or whatever you have up thar!**BG**

(We've talked hats before...but don't think we ever did them, so really, after we get the $4,800...I think it'd be neat if we could work on things like that, too.)

LOVE THAT ENTHUSIASM!!!

Dear Mudcat,
Thank you! After watching your special "The Mating Habits Of Geriatric Folkies", I made an appointment with my doctor, joined a health club, and began a Guinness free diet. I have already lost 5# and most of the more embarrassing side effects of the Guinness.
Please accept my monthly pledge ($$$) as a token of my gratitude.
SINSULL soon to be svelte.

It is svelte of you to have made such a pledge, SINSULL. (Sorry, I just couldn't help myself.) Anyhow, I hereby publicly commend you for your having shed the five pounds. I will sweeten your weight loss by pledging to pay the Mudcat a lump sum of a minimum of $5.00 for every pound you lose between now and December 31st of this year. I reserve the right to increase the amount as circumstances allow; but promise to not decrease it.

Folks, for the price of a single Guinness out of your monthly allotment, you could be of immense help to the Mudcat. Please give what you can.

Soooo.... Does the velvet underwear come with the Mudcat logo emblazoned on the fanny? And does this have anything to do with Sinsull's "embarrassing effects of Guinness"? Is this a realm into which we need not go? OK...

Now look what you guys have done; I've become virtually addicted to this vast expanse of silliness, and may actually have to shell out for another "fix"!
Despite all the gingham dog & calico cat shredding we regularly inflict on one another on those "BS" threads, I have grown perversely attached to the overwhelming majority of Mudcatters, and life here would surely be diminished should the matriculum of this ecclectic, madcap fellowship ever be broken.

As a burned-out, part time lanternmaker at 8 bucks an hour (non-Union, obviously) I won't be a major factor... but I'll do what I can. Jeeez; keep it up, guys!

It being Sunday morning and all, we might find things slowed down a bit, but we are expecting an upsurge when the UK bunch get back form Yorkshire, is it? Also, when the Paltalk crew get going.

Just think, we could wrap this up by tonight, have a complete year's worth of operating expenses covered by the end of today and make the Mudcat secure in our lives for that whole year!

You've all been doing a fantastic and I'd like to take this opportunity to thank each and every one of you, but especially those who've ben pitching in here at Pledge Drive Central answering PM's, sending out notes, refreshing the threads and generally pausing for the cause. GREAT GOOGLY MOOGLY!!!!!!

SINSULL GIVES UP PEPSI FOR MUDCAT!!!!!!! Way to go girl........and the'Cat is purring and burping it's thanks!!!

Right now I have our crack team of auditors from the the firm of Dewey, Cheatham, and Howe working on the updated figures and we'll be giving you an update within the hour!!! We have so many kicking in for CD's and the auction and supporting the Mudcat in many ways that this Pledge Drive is doing MULTIPLE duty!!!

LET'S KEEP THE $$$$ PLEDGES COMING GANG.......CAN YOU IMAGINE MAX WHEN HE RETURNS THE FIRST OF THE WEEK???

Once again, it was NOT Max who started this idea or even asked about such a thing. Mudcat has become an integral and important part of his life and he will keep it going even if there were none of this going on. But Mudcat has become an integral part of many of our lives too and the things we have learned, shared, and taught each other and the emotions of both sorrow and laughter have made this community far from virtual and instead, a very real place. We too have a vested interest in the continuing health of the Mudcat Cafe.

Some have given large amounts, some small, some in-between and it doesn't matter where you fall in that or the amount of your pledge. What is important is to keep the access to and the membership in the Mudcat Cafe FREE!!! It is a great musical resource and a fine collection of friends.......mostly screwballs, but what do you expect???

LET'S MAKE THE GOAL NOW !!!!

It does, Roger and I think that is something only Max will be able to answer. It's a good point. Let's make sure one of us sned him a PM to ask, when he comes in to the office tomorrow. Really good point.

I just had a completely confusing discussion with Willie Cheatham of our auditing firm of Dewey, Cheatham, and Howe and I suspect he's guessing at the figures and may be up to something else since he was wearing a Mudcat T-Shirt and drinking a can of Pepsi. It was very hard to understand him between burps, but I think I got the figures!!!! WE ARE REALLY ALMOST THERE FOLKS!!!!!

$3800.00 !!!

Okay.....Personal side note here.......Many of you have listed the amounts of your pledge. Some have not...and that's OKAY!!! Definitely NOT A PROBLEM! The only thing is that for tally up purposes, I've had to assign my "Best Guess" to some of the pledges. I based those guesses on my knowledge of you and I could be radically wrong in either direction, but it's the best I can do and I'm willing to bet that I'm pretty close! We'll go with that and hope that I am!!! Also in that figure are the pledges of a few 'Catters who have written me and said they were pledging but didn't want their names known. So we'll figure that I am pretty close and go from there......Okay?

ONLY $1000.00 TO GO!! PLEDGE NOW!!

If Mudcat were really a forum for folk and blues music, I'd be happy to make a donation.

However, because Max allows it to be an open forum for for stupidities and for threads that always seem to bring out racists and antisemites, I'll direct my donation money elsewhere.

If Mudcat goes under, it'll mean another hour so per week to play my banjo or guitar.

Spaw,

You seem like a nice guy, so I don't wan't to piss you.

But, if this follows the typical pattern here of huge enthusiasm and promise, followed by very little, when it comes down to 'real' dollars.

Don't get me wrong, what you're doing is great.

Just think that in your enthusiasm, you may badly overestimate the number of dollars that will be on the table when you count it for real.

Sorry for being so negative - experience and all that...

Unnamed Guest......You are probably right. So what? If half of the folks actually do follow through and I'm anyways close in the estimate, then we're still a lot better off. I think most of the folks here will do what they say......History around here tells me that the percentage of 'Catters who follow through is pretty high and the ones who have said they's pledge are pretty good people so I think they'll come through. But again, even if they don't, what the hell huh? Are we a lot closer? You bet...........Now what about you? Got a buck or two?

Yep, Mike J and John Hardly are two fine gents. It is always so damn nice to meet folks 3D. And Kat, m'love, you were the subject of fond conversation. John is a very talented Potter and all round good guy. And a damn fine looking chap too. He took a picture and it should be posted. Don't want all you gals getting all goo goo. And just remember.............I AM THE KEEPER OF THE SACRED FERTILITY RITES!!!

I must say that MikeJ impresses me as what is right about The Mudcat. A true gent. He only lives about an hour or so from me, and in the same town as IvanB. I suspect we will become good friends. I hope so, at any rate. My intuition tells me this is a nice man, and a fine musician.

Folks, won't you step up and support this place that has introduced me to some of the finest people I have ever met. Support our village, and avail yourself when you have the chance to meet other 'Catters 3D. I have met people and exchanged opinions with wonderful folks. It is worth your support.

Now we return to the next installment of "Spaw and the art of Zen Flatulence - The further you are from it, the closer it seems".

I'd like to make a regular (monthly or quarterly) donation but ain't sure how to do it from the UK. What's easiest? Is there an on-line credit card version? You know like them other sites use. The ones with pictures of ladies, eggs and live eels... uh-ho. Not that I would know about them of course. Spaw told me!

Also, I was thinking about getting rid of the few vinyl albums I have left. Some crap, some good. 30 or 40 in all. Some damaged, some pristine. Part folk, part commercial. Cleo Laine to Deep Purple. Perhaps a dozen or so quite rare UK folk ones. I was going to take them to a charity shop but can I donate them to the auction and let all monies rasied go to Mudcat? I'll see if the (US) company my wife works for will unknowingly donate the postage. They're big and rich enough....;-)

Answers here or PM

Cheers

Secure Server for MC and VISA is accessed through the "CATFISH JUMPING OUT OF THE BANJO" logo at the top of the page, just as though you were going to buy something from Amazon and were wanting Mudcat to get a percentage. The logo says "Help Support The Mudcat" and is at the top of every page.

Click on it and then scroll down to the message from Max. In the message is blue clicky for the secure server!

AGAIN FOLKS..............THANKS!!!!!!! We still need to add in another pledge or two or three or as many as we can get, but we have done VERY well in reaching our goal. Thanks too for all the "icing" discussions that have gone on here too about auction items and buying through the 'Cat at sponsor sites.

Remember.......No one has to do this. Mudcat is free and the membership here will remain so as it should be. There are hundreds of non-financial ways to support Mudcat and the very fact that you come here to this wonderful community is a show of support in and of itself. Pledging will not give you any special priviliges or anything else.............except for maybe a warm fuzzy. If you can see your way clear to pledge a few bucks a month, the Mudcat is thankful for that.....if not, we're still thankful you are here!

The fund drive has really caught on, and it just goes to show what a great community this is! When you think about it, almost all of us could forgo a couple of Guinnesses a month (that would be about $7.00 here in Phoenix)for a good cause like this. Or a couple of Buds for a total of $5 a month. Smaller donations added to others, become big ones. Every donation of any size will help us reach the goal!

I have an envelope addressed and ready to go, 'cause I've been wanting that calendar since I read about it, but since for my sanity Mudcat MUST survive (just knowing I can come by for a visit is a cheering thought I carry with me through some LONG hours), I will wait until after this weekend, since I'm doing sales at an event. I will add to that $10 whatever money I make on a specific item....
I think the most appropriate one would be the faun's-horns that I make....when one puts them on, they look like they grew there, a wonderful but gentle joke on pholks, so people buy them with a smile.

Well this has been great hasn't it? Right now I think we are probably $600.oo or so short of the mark, butit can still happen!!!

Many have already sent in their first installment or in some cases the entire amount and Max is getting it in at Mudcat Central! I talked to Max today and he read through some of the figures that had come in so I know we're all as good as our word!! Some are still in the process of setting it up at the bank and some are doing the Secure Server and some checks have already come in too!!!

We may be short, but I'm impressed. We also have some CD/Special Event/Auction and other things that will be coming in so my hope is that in lumps and in drips and drabs, by this time next year we'll see that we MADE the $4800.00 for a $400/Month average. Pat yourselves on the back gang!!!!

AND THAT MEANS EVERYBODY!!!! Yeah, I know that not everyone can pledge and some are helping in a myriad of other ways.........FAR OUT!!! The membership here is FREE and the biggest contribution you can make is in keeping the spirit of Mudcat alive, well, and strong, by the simple act of giving of yourself in participating on the threads, finding lyrics, giving opinions, adding tunes or verses..............By being a friend.

Go out to a school and introduce the kids to the heritage that is theirs...........Visit a hospice or retirement community and keep the real meaning of folk music alive in those sometimes forgotten............Sing a song with your family............Sing songs at a campsite..............Give an instrument to a kid, or a CD................Play an old folk song at your church along with the newer music...............So much to do. All of it supports the 'Cat.

I'll be gone a good bit tomorrow so I'll not twist arms from here on out (much) and I hope by Radio time tomorrow night, we will have made our financial goal............In my mind, we have already surpassed the real goal of the Mudcat Cafe!!! Thanks to Leej for starting the thread, to kat, Doug, Mick, and others for their endless cheerleading and.........

........Many thanks for everything my friends.......You've all done a tremendous job!!!!!
