Lyr Add: To a Bacon Butty ('Rabbi' Burns)

Subject: ADD: Rabbi Burns - To a BACON BUTTY
From: Max Tone

Not PC, but who cares........

Address to a Bacon Butty, and the Kosher Kibitzers.

By "RABBI" Burns.

(Narrator)
Fair fa' ye honest Bacon Butty,
Nae limpid cheese fae Pizza Hut,
Yer sauce, like blood is oozin 'ut it;
Butter jist the same.
Weel are ye worthy in ma gutty,
When ah'm in pain.

(Rabbi)
My son, our Moses made some rules,
And lumped them all together.
Ten cast in stone with Mason's tools.
And then he made another.
"Eat only meat that's Kosher kil't,
And never cross the brig--
Cow or sheep, if blood's been spilt,
But Oy Vey, don't eat the pig."

(Narrator)
The groaning eyes like pill-box slits,
The toaster jumps, the hammer hits.
The kettle's oan, the mood it fits,
In time of need.
While in the pan, the bacon spits,
For urgent feed.

(Objector)
Yer social glee, ye brother men,
I'll killjoy wi' ma thinkin'.
I'm right, yer wrang, so scrieves ma pen,
'Tis evil blood yer drinkin'.
Ye hunt the fox, ye fish the lure,
My wisdom does deplore it.
I eat no meat and thus am pure.
And fer others, I'll outlaw it.

(Narrator)
Who made the heart, the hefty rumps,
Only he can feel it.
He knows each chop, the fatty chumps,
For better art of skillet.
Think, as ye boil yer dall o' pulse,
While I grill steak o' Llama,
My raw meat may yer gut convulse,
And wheesht yer melodrama.

So -----
Hear me, ye Vegetable Bores,
Whae feign the sicht o' bluid
Even yer cats are carnivores,
Yet ye profess unco guid.
Ye pious, faulted, virtuous quines
Whae counsel ony mongers;
Meat ah'll eat, haud yer bleedin' whines.
Ye'd aye eat, if yer hungered.

See ya, Rob.

Mudcatter Jock Morris explained to me what a "bacon butty" is; I am thrilled there is actualy a song about it, it sounds like a lovely culinary item...

It is Peg, I like my bacon grilled but the bread dripping with butter... The smell of one cooking even gets my vegetarian father tempted... Doesn't seem to have the same effect on my mother though but, like me, she did get a laugh out of the verse.

Perhaps the "butt" end of a side of bacon that cannot be sliced? That's my guess anyway. Wonderful song, that.

and for the vegetarians out there..... chip butties with the butter dripping out are great too.....but you need good thick chips, thin french fries won't do.....

A butty is a sandwich.

I don't like butter in bacon butties though, my favourite way is to fry the rashers of bacon, then lightly fry the bread in the bacon fat (or dip the bread in the fat then grill it, if there's too much fat in the pan- don't like the bread too greasy). Yum!

Good verse, Rob.

Some translations fer Sassenachs,
Screives = writes, Wheesht = shut (up), (be) quiet, Sicht = sight, Bluid = blood, Unco = (adj)uncanny, strange, weird, (adv) uncommonly, extremely, Guid = good. Quines = women.

"Unco Guid" has come to mean "The Rigidly Righteous"; Robert Burns used (penned?) the term in the poem I used as my original:-

"Address to the Unco Guid, or the Rigidly Righteous" -- blicky Check it out -- all the Scots words are linked to translations. I hope Rabbie would approve!

Good one, Max Tone! I have bacon butties every Sunday morning; I prefer to have my bread toasted, though. Guess technically it's not a bacon butty but a bacon sandwich but it's still delish!

Order a BLT- (bacon, lettuce, tomato) but tell them to leave out the LT and drizzle the bread with butter as it toasts (on a grill, not in a toaster). I am going into the kitchen- NOW!

Jon Freeman, tell your dad that he is not the only vegetarian who occasionaly yields to the temptation of the dark side. They have a cafeteria where I work that serves stuff like that every day. Every now and then I leave home without breakfast for some reason or other and find the temptation too great, it is definitely the smell that gets you. The only meat smell I can handle. It happened to me just yesterday. JohnB

what's real fun is to cook up some bacon when you are off camping at a pagan gathering among people who elected to get on the vegetarian meal plan but who are not themselves vegetarians; be sure to wait until the end of the week when they are really starved for meat...

I experienced as one of the unfortunate vegetarians and now I always bring seme bacon along on a camping trip...

There is another song on the same subject, which you may hear sung by Ken Hall on the excellent CD "as close as can be" by Peta Webb & Ken Hall (Fellside FECD155).The song is written by Fred McCormick in praise of the noble bacon butty, and contains some splendidly tortuous rhymes;e.g.anguish/sandwich.Transcribing the song is beyond my powers I'm afraid.
