I've seen one or two good recommendations on other threads regarding this course. I'm planning to go to study song and guitar (I started going to folk clubs about two years ago - can read music/know basic chords)Has anyone else been in recent years? What was it like? Julie B |

Durham is a lovely venue anyway and the course was run for people interested in folk music ,,,, by people interested in folk music ... no better recommendation than that I'm still in contact with a number of people who were on my course |

From: John Routledge I went last year and learned so much.The participants were a lovely selection of people and everyone was so keen to learn. Everyone I met had a genuine interest in Folk music and was involved from 9.15am till as long as you could take - Midnight+ usually with Midnight++ on some occasions.(Drinking is optional *BG*) Have booked again for Solo Song and singing with band. Some flexibility is possible so if space is available I might play Northumbrian Smallpies in a concert/ceildh band rather than play only in the innumerable sessions. Cannot be recommended too highly. Please allow at least 3 weeks following the course to come back to Earth. Happy learning to you all - John |

I've had two lessons n I know keel row n winstor gallop. I'm getting the hang of the bass n chords aswell. poor sam, having to put up with me playing!! I went last year (the first time I was old enough to do the youth one) and it was the most amazing week of my life, and my non-folkie friends are sick to death of hearing about it! Great stuff. Unfortunately, this year the Bede Wind Philharmonic dragged me into touring France with it before I knew it clashed with Summerschool....aaaargh. Depression and gloom. I'm expecting a full update! You can camp (4 pounds per person per night) or B&B booked through Folkworks is 21 pounds per night. Ring Folkworks on 0191 222 1717 for details/a leaflet. They say the closing date for enrolments is 29th June. There's a different pricing structure for the Youth Summer School (that runs the same week) e.g.full price residential is 235 pounds, but there are discounts for more than one child per family. From: GUEST John in Hull, get hold of a copy of the Folkworks session collection(email folkworks@folkworks.co.uk) I'm a fairly new whistle player and I find it a great help.You get a CD and the sheet music for 20 session tunes; the tunes are first played slowly so that you can practise by playing along, then they're played at normal speed. |

My two girls both go all the way from the depths of Dorset every year to the youth summerschool and have a wonderful time. Not only that, they learn a fantastic amount from world-class tutors like John Kirkpatrick, chris Woods, Andy Cutting, Karen Tweed, Aiden O'Rourke etc. The fact that 422, The Pack etc - ie Sam Pirt, Ian Stephenson and the rest all met and got together as a result of Folkworks has to be one of the best recommendations! |

I did solo song (Sandra Joyce), and was also in the "band with song" group with Graham & Eileen Pratt, where I did get to use my fiddle! ..You really don't stop all week, do you? I was keeping up ok until Saturday, but then I just had to leave the folk picnic for a few hours to have a lay down and recover (after playing/singing up at Durham Johnson School until 2am the night before) before going to the song concert & closing concert. No doubt I'll go again some time; maybe next year if I've fully recovered by then! :-) Julie P.S. As well as all the Folkworks events, I also enjoyed a visit to Durham Folk Club at the Colpitts pub (Thursday nights); there were 28 people in the little snug bar - the most people per square foot I've ever seen squeezed into a folk club...plus impressive chorus singing! |

From: Jack Blandiver I believe it's up in Framwellgate Moor now, at the Tap and Spile, having been removed from its spiritual home at The Colpitts when the new licensing laws came in. As a Colpitts regular from 1988 to around 2000 (when I gave up smoking) I regard this as a great shame. That wee room at The Colpitts had the perfect containment on the chorus singing that we've rarely found anywhere since, though our brief stint in The Shakespeare came close, which is where we left it almost four years ago to relocate to Lancashire. Durham City Folk Club has little to do with Durham Folkworks Gathering though - and vice versa - see the Durtham Folk Party thread for that. My wife and I met at The Colpitts around 1993, though we didn't get together until the Folk Party in 1999 - so twelve happy years of Rapunzel & Sedayne! |

It's a lot of pennies but well worth them. I thoroughly enjoyed the few years I went. I just don't have the funds these days and have to make do with a few days at Saltburn and Whitby instead. You won't need to worry about sessions in Durham then. Summer School is one long session :-) |

There used to be a Thursday session at The Dun Cow ran by those lovely people from Horsehead - hopefully there still is. As I recall the Tuesday session took itself very seriosly - one night I was in the other bar when a bloke asked what the music was in the back room. The barman just shrugged and said, Riverdance Music, which seemed about right, on a level of background ambient muzak anyway. |
