While I don't have all the verses, there are references to the "old folks" and a big mean bulldog, "... up the hill and on the level, I couldn't outrun that big Devil.." etc. |

From: Arkie I suspect the pronunciation is in keeping with the dialect spoken in the mountains of southwest Virginia. Deef could be used in place of deaf, and cheer instead of chair and a long "e" sound often substituted for "ia" and sometimes for an "i". Having seen all this in print makes me wonder if "sic him" might not have originated from "seek him". |
