Subject: Lyr Add: GIVE HIM ONE MORE AS HE GOES (A P Carter)
From: GUEST,nessensf@aol.com

Some years ago my Grandpa taught me this song. I know most of the lyrics and tune, but can't find the music or evidence of its publication. Please help if you can. You can reach me via email at nessensf@aol.com.

Thanks,

The lyrics follow...

GIVE HIM ONE MORE AS HE GOES

Oh, my sweetheart's a shy little miss,
And one that I fondly adore.
When I called at her house Sunday night,
She'd give me one kiss and no more.

So I picked her right up in my arms,
To impress her with all of my charms.
Then she said with a fright,
Don't squeeze me so tight and
I'll give you one more as you go.

(Chorus)
I'll give you one more as you go.
I'll give you one more as you go.
Then she said with a fright,
Don't squeeze me so tight and
I'll give you one more as you go.

Now her father's a feeling old man.
And he has such a feeling for me.
I felt that this feeling began,
When his daughter I first came to see.

Well he knocked me right down one the floor.
And he cursed and he spat and he swore.
Then he said with a swear as his foot smote the air,
I'll give you one more as you go.

(Chorus)
I'll give you one more as you go.
I'll give you one more as you go.
Then he said with a swear as his foot smote the air,
I'll give you one more as you go.

Oh the dog, Oh the dog, Oh the brute,
He was on to me quick as a flash.
He ruined my four-dollar suit,
And he made me a subject for Hash.

I climbed over the garden wall,
In a manner not slow at all…
When a voice from the house,
Cried out, sick him Touse.
And give him one more as he goes.

(Chorus)
And give him one more as he goes.
And give him one more as he goes.
When a voice from the house,
Cried out, sick him Touse.
And give him one more as he goes.

based on a google search - it was recorded by the Carter Family on "Clinch Mountain Treasures" - lyrics at http://www.icdc.com/~fmoore/carterfamily/give_him_one_more_as_he_goes.htm

This sounds similar to another turn of the century gem; "Kiss Me Quick and Go Away!"

While I don't have all the verses, there are references to the "old folks" and a big mean bulldog, "... up the hill and on the level, I couldn't outrun that big Devil.." etc.

From: Jim Dixon

This is usually credited to A. P. Carter, but the Carter Family recorded their version in 1940. This one is at least 25 years older:

From Good Old-Time Songs, Issue 3 (New York: Wehman Bros., 1914), page 111:

I'LL GIVE YOU ONE MORE AS YOU GO.

1. My sweetheart's a sly little miss,
Though a girl whom I fondly adore;
And often I ask for a kiss.
She gives me just one and no more.
I called at her house Sunday night
And asked for a kiss as her beau.
She answered: "You fright, don't squeeze me so tight.
I'll give you one more as you go.

CHORUS: "I'll give you one more as you go.
I'll give you one more as you go."
She answered: "You fright, don't squeeze me so tight.
I'll give you one more as you go."

2. Her daddy is a feeling old man.
He's always a-feeling for me!
I remember this feeling began
When I first went his daughter to see.
While bidding my sweetheart goodnight,
In the usual manner, you know,
He exclaimed with a swear, as his foot smote the air:
"I'll give you one more as you go.

CHORUS: "I'll give you one more as you go.
I'll give you one more as you go."
He exclaimed, with a swear, as his foot smote the air:
"I'll give you one more as you go."

3. Oh, that dog! oh, that dog! what a brute!
He was onto me quicker than a flash.
He was mashed on my eight-dollar suit
And to make me a subject for hash.
I jumped over the garden wall
In a manner, you bet, was not slow,
When a voice from the house I heard say: "Seek him, Towse.
Just give him one more as he goes.

CHORUS: "Just give him one more as he goes.
Just give him one more as he goes."
When a voice from the house I heard say: "Seek him, Towse.
Just give him one more as he goes."

[Some version of this song is also in Vance Randolph's Ozark Folksongs volume 3.]

The Carter lyrics can be found at http://www.bluegrasswest.com/ideas/carter2.htm. I compared with the recording, and made a few changes.

GIVE HIM ONE MORE AS HE GOES
(Carter Family Version)

My sweetheart was a shy little miss
And one I fondly adore
And when you ask her for a kiss
She'll give you just one and no more.
She'll give you just one and no more
She'll give you just one and no more
And when I ask her for a kiss
She'll give you just one and no more

Her dad was a feeling old man
He always had a feeling for me
I can tell you when this feeling began
When his daughter I first went to see.

I was bidding my sweetheart goodnight
In the usual manner you know
When a voice from the house said "Sic him Towse,
And give him one more as he goes!"
"And give him one more as he goes
And give him one more as he goes
When a voice from the house said "Sic him Towse,
And give him one more as he goes!"

It was over the garden wall
In a manner I'll tell you not slow
He exclaimed with a swear and his foot smote the air
"And I'll give him one more as he goes!"
"I'll give him one more as he goes
I'll give him one more as he goes"
He exclaimed with a swear and his foot smote the air,
"And I'll give him one more as he goes!"

Same song, but three very different versions. I think I'm going to add this one to my repertoire.

When the Carters sing it, it sounds like "Seek him, Towse" - but to me, the sense is "sic him, Towse."
Thoughts?

I suspect the pronunciation is in keeping with the dialect spoken in the mountains of southwest Virginia. Deef could be used in place of deaf, and cheer instead of chair and a long "e" sound often substituted for "ia" and sometimes for an "i". Having seen all this in print makes me wonder if "sic him" might not have originated from "seek him".
