Peg,

If you are coming to New York City, I suggest that you call Folk-Fone, 212-563-4099, where you can hear a recorded listing of what's going on in and around town. That's also the phone number for the New York Pinewoods Folk Music Club, and if you leave your name and mailing address, we will send you a sample copy of our newsletter with even more listings.

And if you do show up at the monthly open mic, there is a better than even chance Guest KAS will be sitting at the first table. He might even be in the company of a tall, dark, and handsome Johnson Girl.

Keep me posted if any of you come to Boston! You can come to the singers' club at Paddy Burke's. There are also some folk open mics...

The New York Pinewoods Folk Music Club also has Sea Music Concerts with NY Packet and guest performers every Tuesday in June and July from 6-8 pm at South Street Seaport. On June 5, the Johnson Girls will be performing at the Whitman Gallery at 211 Water Street. After that date the concerts will be on board the ship Peking. Admission is only $3. Other concerts are: June 12 Wharf Rats; June 19 Bonnie & Dan Milner; June 26 Spindrift; July 10 Mark Maniak; July 17 Fulton Ferry Amblers; July 24 Jerry Epstein; July 31 Anne Price. It's great to hear sea music in an authentic historical setting, and the music is fabulous, with alot of audience participation on shanties and choruses. South Street Seaport has a beautiful view of the water and the NY skyline, and great shopping and food too.

Guest Lorraine,

Folk Music Week at Pinewoods Camp in Plymouth, Massachusetts is presented this year, Aug. 25 thru Sept. 1, by the Country Dance and Song Society (and usually attended by many NY Pinewoods Club folks!). You can find more info at CDSS's web site, under Programs. (I'm purposely making you stroll through the layers of CDSS info rather than linking directly to that page in case other aspects might strike your fancy.)

This idea for an all traditional get-together is a fine one whose time has come. And it's about time. Thanks for doing it. It's almost enough to make me wish I lived in New York. ;-) I do truly wish I could be there with you good people. I've continuing fond memories of the times I was able to sing with so many of you.

Just keeping this thread refreshed. We would really like to hear all kinds of traditional music at this open mic. Any slack key guitarits out there? Anyone sing rancilla style? Jibaro? Maybe just some good old fashioned Appalachian balladeer accompanying him/herself on a mountain dulcimer plucked with a feather taken from a whiporwill?

Third Wednesday of every month.

Please take note: For the months of July and August, New York Pinewoods Folk Music Club will likely hold the traditional folk music open microphone as an outdoor song circle jam session. The likely location will be somewhere in Central Park or in Riverside Park. We will announce the location as soon as we finalize plans.

We should be back indoors at the Triad on Wednesday, September 19, 2001, at 7 PM, at which time the open microphone format will resume.

The following ditty is to be sung to the tune of "Frankie and Johnny" (traditional).
New words © Stephen L. Suffet 2001.

Frankie walked into the Triad,
Ordered a bottle of beer,
Said to the hefty MC man,
Is the open mike around here?
Do I pay five bucks?
Can I do two songs?

Ain't gonna tell you no story,
Ain't gonna tell you no lie,
You can do two songs in this classy joint,
That's enough to to make you cry.
You pay five bucks,
And you do two songs!

Strangely enough, when I am in NYC, I usually stay at the Milburne, which is a Hop,skip, and jump away--stranger still, I have been known to frequent the Triad--I haven't been there midweek for a while, but may be there in November--If I can make it, I'll bring the ukulele and sing some Hapa Haoli tunes, if that will fit your definition of traditional--

It fits. There's a chance you'll be one of up to three ukelelists who show up. Or you might be the only one.

This particular open mic often gets crowded. If you get there after 8 o'clock the chances are you'll be frozen out all together. So if you plan to perform, be there on time. The emcee is a bit gruff at times, but he is essentially a good guy, and he won't take his own turn until last. You'll be impressed by the musicianship, almost always very high quality for an open mic. On a good night, the pros will turn out in force. For example, I have seen Ken Schatz (Mudcatter KAS) at this open mic.

New York is such a big city, that in absolute quantity there is more of everything. More polka than Pennsylvania, more Arabic music than Michigan, more bomba y pleña than Puerto Rico. However, you may have to do some serious searching, because the proportion of what you are looking for may be relatively small. If I may use a litotes, Larry is not incorrect.

Open mikes work much better when there isn't a mike. If a mike is needed, they are too big to work anyway. For traditional music that is. They can still be fun, but it's a different sort of fun.

The minimum drink price at the Triad is $4. The 2 drink minimum is only for those who sit in the lounge area. If you sit at the bar about 10 feet away you need only buy 1 drink. Anyway, the 2 drink minimum has not been consistently enforced, as the wait staff have been making their rounds only once. The patron has to take the initiative for the second drink. Take that as you will.

The $5 admission and the drink purchase are not just so you can do 2 songs and go home. They are so you can have the pleasure of hearing other people do their 2 songs as well. Some really top notch musicians show up at these trad music open microphones. For example, among the performers I have heard within the past year has been Heather Wood, the surviving member of the Young Tradition.

Also, the $5 and drink purchase lets you stay past 10 PM to hear the Triad's regularly booked acts, which begin at that hour and continue until about 2 AM. All together that's no worse than most places in Manhattan, and it's a better deal than many offer.

The trad music open microphone for November 2001 will be on the 21st.

Please note that New York Pinewoods Folk Music Club also sponsors many activities in and around New York City where people can perform for free. These are our various song circles, jam sessions, open sings, house parties, outdoor gatherings, etc. For information, please visit our website at: http:www.folkmusicny.org

Or CLICK!

Reminder: Next session of our trad music open microphone is Wdnesday, September 19, 2001, beginning at 7 PM. Venue: Triad Bar and Lounge, 158 West 72nd Street, New York City.
