Could someone, probably from North West England provide the lyrics to "Where There's Muck There's Brass". It was recorded by Five Penny Piece. Yes, I was born in Lancashire. Thanks. Ray.

I found one apparently done by the Levellers which ahd that phrase but it was called "4 o'clock."

Just for fun, you might want to read this about Brasso and someone's aunt in Liverpool. It came up with the "Where there's muck there's brass" as its title.

Good luck,

kat

I couldn't find this anywhere on Google - perhaps someone has the record and could transcribe it. Apparently it's on The Very Best of Fivepenny Piece and presumably also on an earlier LP. Needless to say I don't have these fine records in my collection (probably because they are the products of a neighbouring rival county whose name escapes me!).

Incidentally, Kat, you probably won't be interested to know that Brasso is 'from Hull' too, born there in 1905 and still going strong.

How about that, Les! We do have it over here, too. I'll have to see if they have a plant which puts it out over here or if it has the "Hull" addy on the back.

If Bernard does not respond try PM'ing him. I think he still has contact with someone from the band.

Cheers

It's part of the Reckitt Benckiser Group (formally Reckitt and Colman). They've got factories all over the place. Reckitt's started in Hull in 1840 (Isaac Reckitt was member of a local Quaker family), producing laundry blue, and added quite a few products since (including Dettol/Dettox antiseptics and cleaners).

There's a local Quaker cemetary full of Reckitts (they are all dead, though).

LOL, well one would hope so, if that's where they spend all of their time.:-) Thanks for that trinket of info!

"Out of the Blue comes the whitest wash"

A couple of us were discussing "blue-bags" in the pub, just the other night.

Les, as the fount of wisdom from Hull, how about you start a Reckitt & Coleman thread - it has the potential to outdo Marmite...;)

Off to the shop for a box of matches Beehive to light my pipe. Will check out R&C products.

Why were Quakers involved in so many fine products which survive to this day?

Sorry to be off-topic - must've been the "brasso" I was drinking...;)

Cheers - Sam

Try this

Where there's muck there's brass.

Chorus
Where there's muck there's brass.
You can't deny the facts.
The coal the coke the smog and the smoke
some get rich while others choke.
I'm sure you will agree, it wasn't meant to be.
But many folk will not go broke.
Cos. Where there's muck there's brass.

Once upon a time in Ashton under Lyme.
They built the chimneys good and high.
To shoot the smoke up in the sky.
To make a cotton shirt. Was worth two tons of dirt.
The more they made the more we paid.
Cos. Where there's muck there's brass.

Then the government decreed.
There really was a need.
To erase the years and years of grime
and give the town a good wash down.
so they started with the town hall.
The church and Masonic Hall. Next it'll be the W.C.
Cos. Where there's muck there's brass.

Now the waste disposal truck.
Will shift ten tons of muck.
They've plastic bins as never rust.
Great machines old cars to crush.
They've got it all worked out.
They'll not shift muck for nowt.
The more we make the more they take.
Cos. Where there's muck there's brass.

THere's been of bother with our sister Mary-Anne,

THere was father and mother and sister Mary-Anne,
Waiting to welcome Fred Fannakapan,
There was uncles and aunties

Round the kitchen table

Father said

Sit down and make yourself at home

The family learning questions
How much he earned in a week
There was pancakes and pork pies and plates of beef and ham
Waiting to welcome Fred Fannakapan
Fred sat there as mournful as could be

THe only one who couldn't eat was Fred Fannakapan

There was whisky and

There was bottled ale and bottled stout.

And that's the last we ever saw of Fred Fannakapan.
