Keith Brown where are you

01 Jun 01 - 02:54 PM (#474651)
Subject: Keith Brown where are you
From: GUEST,Telco

Does any one know where I can contact Keith Brown who used to live in Cleethorpes and run a folk club originally in Louth Lincolnshire and later at the Lifeboat in Cleethorpes. He moved from Cleethorpes some time ago and I lost touch with him. I would like to contact him again if any one can help.

Hi Telco

I used to be in Keith's band at the Robin Hood pub in Louth. We are still in Christmas card contact so if you e-mail me at petercptswing@aol.com I can put you in touch with him. Does anyone else remember the old sod?

Cheers - Captain Swing

Re this band at the Robin Hood, I fear your memory is playing tricks on you in your obvious old age. It may have been the Lincolnshire Poacher. Dont know where Keith is now though.

After sending that post, on my way to the pub, I thought - "Were the hell was the Robin Hood?" Of course it was the Lincolnshire Poacher! I was hoping I could recitfy it before some bright spark corrected me.

As far as the old age goes, I was the youngest member of the band. And who are you, Topsy?

Ask me a Keith Brown trivia question and I'll try to proove my credibility.

Cheers - Captain Swing

When I'm sober I can spell 'where' properly sometimes!

I'm all out of Keith's trivia questions but Captain Swing what was the name of the resident band fronted by Keith at the Poacher? Also what was the tribute song to Louth Folk Club a copy of a John Connoly composition? If you can pass these questions now try them again when your sober and see if you get the same answer!!

I am sober now Topsy but I can still only answer one of your questions. Keith's most well known band was Shoreline. I joined in 1971 when Keith's brother Graham (banjo and whistle) and John Skrypniuk (anything with strings on) were about to go to university (Nottingham and Bangor repectively).

That left the band as a trio comprised of Keith, Liz Smith (vocals) and me. Keith later roped in Geoff Lyles who stayed for a short time and then formed Silver Birch. Geoff was replaced by Derek Rushmer who also stayed for a short time and also defected to Silver Birch. By this time Keith had changed the name of the band to Contra - not a good move. Around April 1973 Liz and I left to form a band with Max Bradley(fiddle). I can't remember what we were called but Keith was kind enough to give us a gig. I disappeared to college in Dudley in September 1973.

Before I joined the band one of the members was none other than Vicky Clayton who later joined Skryp in Ragged Heroes and, more famously, sang with Fairport.

Anyway, who were you, Topsy.

Captain:

The answer to my first question, which evades you now is "here's to the Grimsby Lads down at the Poacher, here's to the lads who play there every week, creaking and groaning and fidling and tuning, all night long and the audience asleep". You memory however serves you well in respect of the formation and continuation of Shoreline. What ever hapened to Liz? I know Graham went on to form his own computer company in the Midlands somewhere, and Skrypnuk was last heard of residing in a nurses home attached to a hospital!! As to your last question of who was I, I can only reply that I still am.

I remember Keith from the old days. In fact he was responcible for getting me started performing in folk clubs with one of his bands Solid Oak back in the late 70s I haven't been in touch with him since he moved to the Leeds area way back when but if any one knows him I wouldnt mind getting back in touch.

Topsy

After sending my last post I went to the pub (for a change) and it came to me in a flash - 'Here's to the Grimsby Lads', of course. I think it was actually written by Skryp - he also played it at the Dolphin some Sundays and substituted 'folk club' for 'Poacher'.

Liz and I were engaged for a time but we split up after I went to the Midlands. I think she got married and moved to the North East. Does anyone out there know where Liz is?

Graham lives in Slough now and is a software writer.

Skryp is in Norwich. I think he is a radiographer. There is a website somewhere with pictures and info about Skryp. I'll find it later and post it.

So, Topsy, who are and were you!!!

What an amazing memory you have Topsy, though a little inaccurate on this one. It was Keith who was referred to by me as a masterbaker (having supposedly taken a job at Glentons). I used to try to corpse him when he was introducing songs - I think I succeeded with this one.

You have so much information that, unless you were permanently tape recording everything, you must have known us all very well. Come on - own up, reveal yourself!

Reading this thread is nostalgic for me. I sang as a guest at Louth, Cleethorpes, Grimsby, many times over the years, though it's now near enough ten years since I was last in that region. I'm not sure about Keith, but remember are the Broadside lads, and Stan & Cath Compton, and I remember hearing Silver Birch. Had an album of theirs once. The last time I wa at Louth folk club it was run by Dominic Duffy. Is it still running?

From: GUEST,Topsey Turvey

Well now Captain, I am really amazed that you have not as yet worked it out, but I am pleased that looking for Keith has brought back memories for others as well as you and me. I am now wondering who Burl is, and have I seen him as a guest in Louth, Grimsby or Cleethorpes? Incidently Burl my understanding of the present Louth situation is that the folk club there split into two, a musicians club playing tunes and a singers club held at different pubs on different days, and presumably never the twain do meet!! A pity.

As for you Mr. C what are you doing these days.Still performing?

I have been directed to this thread as I am seeking info on Rob Van Sante who came over from Holland and used to play with Silver Birch at one time, It was suggested that there was some info in this thread but I seem to have missed it. Has anyone and idea where Rob is these days?

Well Topsy, I have my suspicions about your identity but I'm not going to commit myself yet. I'm not sure if you threw in a red herring earlier on to get me off the scent.

Now if you can answer this trivia question about me it may confirm things. I was bought a mandolin for my 18th birthday. Who did it belong to before that?

As for my history - I stayed in Dudley until 1984 then moved to Hull. Started Cottingham Folk Club in 1985 which I continued to run until 1994. Then started working as one half of a Celtic-Rock pub duo called The Ballistic Brothers initially but later changed to False McCoy. We have continued to get fairly regular gigs over the last six years playing in pubs, golf clubs, weddings etc. I play fiddle, guitar and mandola.

Cheers - Captain Swing

Now you really know who you are talking to!

However, the instigator of your taunts is not I.

Could be Brian Masson. who works for Telecom, but I doubt it because this chap knows more about all of us than Brian would.

What about Dave Evardson? or even Liam Duffy for that matter. But of course it could be GB himself!!

Hi Keith and Topsey et al

Good to hear from you Keith. I must admit, that sounds a bit more like you. Now whoever Topsey is it can't be Dave E, Liam D or even Graham as he/she claims to have known me before I knew you. We know it's not Pete Dale as he has sent a post and I'm in e-mail contact with him anyway. Also, Pete wasn't going to Louth when I was. I don't think it's Skryp - I don't think Skryp would remember my brothers' names. I thought it was Liz at one point but she would have known the answer to the mandolin question as she bought the bloody thing for £5!

Keith, we'll have to work together on this. Topsey, are you male or female? Do you know who or what Egmond was?

Strange what you can find on the internet - is that Keith Brown of 'Jacks Maggot' fame? . A later band which played at the Sub on a Sunday night in the early 80's.

If so I was just talking about you the other day as you were the person who through Liam Duffy got me playing guitar and mandolin - I recently found a tape of you playing the tunes for me to learn., a photo of the band and a recording of my first live appearance.

I moved up to Durham some 20 years ago and have recently started playing again, not quite back to first base but having to get those fingers working again.

I also remember seeing you with Shoreline in 1970 at the Mucky Duck Folk nights in Grimsby, I did a couple of singer's nights. Sorry to hear that Liam has gone, he held it all together well didn't he? I also remember talking to you at the South Parade youth club in 1968/9 when the local pop band "Arthur J. Crombie's Musical Experiment" supplied the music. You lived very near to Paul Hammond as a young lad didn't you? I think it was Paul who introduced me to you about 1966. well then who am I? Hope that you're gonna check out this long dormant thread sometime soon. Cheers then, from Mr X
