Thought for the day - June 2, 2001

Every once in awhile life has a way of sweeping away our preconceptions or, our opinions based on experience. I've recently learned this in a pleasant way about someone whom I thought was an enemy for life.

It is a nice confirmation for me. As I work within the non-profit human rights group, here, in Wyoming, our goal has always been to reach out not only to those of like mind and similar goals, but also to those who may not agree with us or who feel disenfranchised for whatever reason. It is not an easy thing to do, sometimes.

Thankfully, we can grant and receive second chances and things just may be seen in a different light. As I said, it's been quite pleasant and I am grateful.

It's a good one. In fact it's more like a thought-for-the-month.

I reconnected with someone I've known for thirty years. We got along OK then but never "clicked". I had him on my show a few weeks ago, and we decided we really like each other. Kinda nice. His name's Darcy Wickham and he's visited Mudcat a few times recently. Top notch picker.

Funny, some people always say they never 'get' a second chance. Not ever realizing that one has to humble themselves just a teensy bit to 'get' that gift. Sometimes, just saying that you're sorry you fucked up is enough to do it, othertimes it's the real effort of making yourself change how you are.

I saw this quote today--

Justice is when you get what you deserve.

Mercy is when you don't get what you deserve.

Grace is when you get what you don't deserve.

Sometimes the one who messed up can shift a situation by saying sorry. But sometimes the one wronged can shift it just by their own grace and wisdom, without the person saying sorry, just by growing in grace such that the person's "fault" is seen in a different light.

I am not sure I like the one about grace, but it is true about the wronged rising above.

Thanks for your comments, everyone.

Well, it doesn't have to have the sense of absolute undeservedness-- more that one's actions have not been such as to warrant untold blessings being heaped upon oneself... that grace is about our getting such goodness "just because."

I think receiving grace would be more from our unselfish acts with no expectation of reward, i.e. like get a great big surprise present that we never in our wildest dreams had ever imagined getting.

I also think being in a "state of grace" is when one has transcended all earthly desires and lives only to serve. A tall order, but one we may glimpse, fleetingly in certain extreme moments.

Kat,

I agree with you on all of the above... I do experience other forms of grace as well but I do not experience any of these as mutually exclusive.
