Hi Adonis,

I'm sure Ted Edwards wrote the first song, and I think Eric Bogle wrote the second.

I'll have a look around for them.

Hi, Adonis. the band played waltzing matilda (click here) you will find is in the Digital Tradition database with a link to previous discussions on the song in the forum. Use the box on the forum page under "Digitrad and Forum Search" to find other songs.

Meant to say also that Coalhole Cavalry, Ted Edwards' lovely song, is not in the DT, nor could I find the lyrics to it using Google, though I found a couple of mentions in discographies.

Must be someone here who does it... Bernard? Dave the Gnome? (I just join in the choruses).

I also have the lyrics, but no chords though they are easily worked out. Our local Scout gang show has just done this.PM me and I'll type it out for you.

If you are UK, I'll post you a photocopy!

I can remember snatches, so eagerly awaiting your posting, Eric. Funnily enough another of Teds songs made an appearance last night - The coal and Albert Berry. Cracking stuff. Does anyone know how I can get hold of a copy of the BBC documentary about Ted crossing the Sahara btw?

Cheers

Greetings - hope the followings ok it's in dialectish - the chords seem OK from what I remember but we only ever played it once when we did an talk/sing/dance on Lancashire and clogs at a local school - we gave about 12 kids clogs to wear and had them marching across the hall in the school - went very well till the caretaker saw the remains of his nice new wooden floor - and the clogs had rubbers on the bottom!!!!! - Pete

COALHOLE CAVALRY
 Am Em Am
Early mornin' dreaming is shattered,
Am G Am
One clitter-clatter on t'flags eytside.
Am Em Am
Th'owd knocker-up rat-tattin' on t'winder,
Am G
Makin' sure nobody's o'er lied.

CHORUS.
Am G
Clitterin' clatterin', coal-hole cavalry,
Am Em Am
Gallopin' rain or fine.
Am G
Clitterin' clatterin', coal-hole cavalry,
Am Em Am
Gallopin' deyn to t'mine.
Fayther yawnin', drizzle on t'winder,
More clitter-clatterin' comin' deyn th'hill.
Stairs are creakin', th'oven doors bangin',
Faythers waitin' for Uncle Bill.

Mam is fillin' 'is bottle wi' wayter,
Clatter-clitter-clatter an' rattle on t'latch.
Clogs int'lobby an' talkin'quiet,
Arguin' t'toss abeyt Sunday's match.

Come on Billy lad, best get gooin',
Clatter-clitter-clatter an' front door bang!
Gooin' deyn to t'mucky owd coal pit,
Hear t'pit-hat an' snap tin clang.

Colliers ridin' a million horses,
Clatter-clitter-clatter all over the world.
Get lost injuns, cavalry's comin',
Picks an' shovels an' banners unfurled.

Buzzer's blowin, a sound of vict'ry,
Clatter-clitter-clatter's over an' done.
All t'world's quiet, an' sleep is comin'
Wish I was a collier….. it must be fun.

If you still can't work it out you'll find the words in The Jolly Herring, one of a series of books by A&C Black. All the series have some brilliant songs in them. (our copy is known as 'the Drunken Goldfish' when I need it!)

Thanks Pete. I'm sure people can figure out where chords change without further jiggling.

There have been methods for placing chords over words posted, probably in HTML practice threads (search for HTML in content filter at top of forum page, age 2 yrs and you'll find plenty... :0)

I am the lucky owner of the original manuscipt of the lyrics which Ted gave me as a Christmas present 3 years ago, they have pride of place on top of the piano. Having been a friend of Ted's for over 30 years please let me assure you that although the majority of words put down by Clansfolk are correct Ted would never use GET LOST INJUNS when BUGGER OFF INJUNS says so much more and the word Ee should preceed I wish I were a collier in the last line.

Sorry about the "Bugger off" Mister

The copy was from my archives and were most likely changed because of the School venue we were playing for! :-)

Sing well.........

Glad someone else found it. I didn't have time to type it all in the other night. My version also has 'look out Injuns, Cavalry's coming'. It is now corrected.

Cheers folks

I'm so glad to get some idea of who wrote this wonderful song, I've been singing ever since I heard Gary and Very Aspey do it at the July Wakes (they were'nt called festivals then) in the 70s. I've played it to friends in Germany, Holland, Italy and many parties in the UK, and I always use the Bugger Of Indians (never heard it differently).

Is Ted still going because I would like to express a great thank to him for the wonderful lyrics and the depth of history the song should (but often doesn't) give the audience. When I try to explain the more obscure Lancastrian bits I usually get "get on with it" from the phillistines!

Contact through rfears@btinternet.com would be appreciated so I can make the intro even longer.
