04 Jun 01 - 01:28 PM (#476024) Subject: Nautical song needed From: GUEST,Static Chaos I am writing a musical adaptation of Lewis Carroll's poem "The Hunting of the Snark" and I need a good song to go at the beginning. For those of you unfamiliar with the poem, a crew of English sailors are rowing a boat toward the shore. I would like for them to sing an upbeat, perhaps comical, nautical folk song while keeping time with the oar strokes. Can anyone help me with suggestions? Brock |
04 Jun 01 - 01:34 PM (#476036) Subject: Lyr Add: LIVERPOOL JUDIES From: Dave (the ancient mariner) Try this one. Yours, Aye. Dave LIVERPOOL JUDIES When I was a youngster, I sailed with the rest On a Liverpool packet bound out for the West. We anchored one day in the harbor of Cork, Then we put out for the port of New York. CHORUS: And it's row, row bullies, row, Them Liverpool judies have got us in tow For forty-two days we was hungry and sore. Oh, the winds was again' us. The gales, they did roar, But off Battery Point we did anchor at last With our jib boom hove to and the canvas all fast. The boardinghouse masters was off in a trice A-shouting and promising all that was nice, And one fat old crimp took a fancy to me. Says he, "You're a fool, lad, to follow the sea." Says he, "There's a job as is waiting for you, With lashings o' liquor and bugger-all to do." Says he, "Wha'd yer say, lad? Will you jump her too?" Says I, "You old bastard, I'm damned if I do." But the best of intentions, they never goes far. After thirty-two days at the door of a bar, I tossed off me liquor and what do you think? That rotten old bastard had drugs in me drink. The next I remember, I woke in the morn On a three-skys'l yarder bound south round Cape Horn, With an old suit of oilskins and two pairs of socks And a bloomin' great head and a dose of the pox. Now all you young sailors, take a warnin' by me. Keep and eye on yer drinks when the liquor is free, And pay no attention to runner or whore When your hat's on your head and your feet's on the shore. |
04 Jun 01 - 01:37 PM (#476040) Subject: RE: Help: Nautical song needed From: Mrrzy Static Chaos, what age is your audience? I would have assumed anything about The Hunting of the Snark to be oriented towards children, to whom I would not normally sing of the Pox... but I like this song, Dave(tam)! |
04 Jun 01 - 01:46 PM (#476054) Subject: RE: Help: Nautical song needed From: GUEST,Static Chaos The audience would be children but any good song is welcome. I can change an "offensive" word here and there to keep it clean for the kiddies. I can also leave out a verse or two so the adults can wink a knowing eye to each other while the kids remain in the dark. ;) Brock |
04 Jun 01 - 01:48 PM (#476057) Subject: RE: Help: Nautical song needed From: Mrrzy Try looking at Gilbert & Sullivan's piratical or nautical songs, they have some good ones. I'll keep thinking... |

Wouldn't want too much frivolity. Thanks, and keep 'em coming. Brock |

04 Jun 01 - 03:56 PM (#476204) Subject: RE: Help: Nautical song needed From: Charley Noble My grandfather used to sing this one to us as we rowed him around the cove; it's obviously not a traditional sailor song. ROWING SONG (late 19th century song by unknown author from the singing of William Zorach; tune unknown) Chorus: Dip, boys, dip the oars, Bid farewell to the dusky shores; Freedom ours shall be, As we cross the deep blue sea. The zephyrs woo the spray, me boys; Their laughter fills the air; We'll bid them wake (?) our song, me boys, And steal away our care. (CHO) |

Also,,,,,what about Speed Bonny Boats, like a bird on the wing! " Onward," the sailors cry! Carry a boy, born to be king, over the sea to Skye. |

05 Jun 01 - 12:45 PM (#476841) Subject: RE: Help: Nautical song needed From: GUEST,JohnB The words I remember for Liverpool Judies are a lot cleaner than DaveTAM's. From Liverpool to Frisco' a'roving I went, to stay in that country it was my intent, but Girls and Strong Whisky like other damn fools, well I soon was transported back to Liverpool and it's row, row bullies row them Liverpool Judies have got us in tow. We Shipped on the Alaska lying out in the Bay, just to wait for a fair wing to get underway, now it's all gone blank. Dave's probably sounds a bit more traditional though. JohnB |

06 Jun 01 - 08:20 PM (#477975) Subject: RE: Help: Nautical song needed From: CRANKY YANKEE If you're going to be rowing to this ditty, I suggest that you eliminate the long RRRRRROOOOOOOOOOwwwwwwwwwwwin the chorus and just sding it on meter, stroke stroke atroke stroke row,row bullies row, them liverpool judies have got us in tow |
06 Jun 01 - 08:23 PM (#477978) Subject: RE: Help: Nautical song needed From: CRANKY YANKEE let's try this again. STROKE.............STROKE................STROKE.................STROKE ROW, ROW BULLIES ROW, THEM LIVERPOOL JUDIES HAVE GOT US IN TOW. |
06 Jun 01 - 08:27 PM (#477983) Subject: RE: Help: Nautical song needed From: CRANKY YANKEE nO, THAT'S NOT IT EITHER. it would be a lot easier if they'd print the damned thing as it's typed. STROKE...................STROKE.....................STROKE.....................STROKE ROW, ROW BULLIES ROW, THEM LIVERPOOL JUDIES HAVE GOT US IN TOW |
06 Jun 01 - 08:38 PM (#477990) Subject: RE: Help: Nautical song needed From: CRANKY YANKEE dAMN, THE THIRD "STROKE" IS ON THE FIRST SYLLABLE OF THE WORD "jUDIES" . AND, THE LAST STROKE IS ON THE FINAL WORD, "TOW". If you sing it with the long Rrrroooooooooowwww , as in "ROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOW, ROW BULLIES ROW, THEM LIVERPOOL JUDIES HAVE GOT US IN TOW", yopu can't row to it, Done properly, it even has a rhythm for rolling your wrists under soa as to feather the oars, thereby saving a lot of energy lifting them out of the water with each stroke. Like this the (R)'s indicate where to roll your wrists under: ROW,(R),ROW BULLIES ROW (R)THEM LIVERPOOLJUDIES(R)HAVE GOT US IN TOW(R). |
06 Jun 01 - 10:35 PM (#478068) Subject: Lyr Add: MESSING ABOUT ON THE RIVER From: Dave (the ancient mariner) The only rowing song I enjoyed was "Messing About on the River" slow and easy hee hee! When the weather is fine, then you know it's a sign, for Messing about on the river. If you take my advice, there's nothing so nice, as Messing about on the river. There are long boats and short boats and all sorts of craft, And cruisers and keel boats and some with no draught; So take off your coat, go hop in a boat, go Messing about on the river. (Keep repeating "Messing about on the river" after each line.) There are boats made from kits, that reach you in bits, go.... Or you might like to scull in a glass-fibred hull, just.... There are tillers and rudders and anchors and cleats And ropes that are sometimes referred to as sheets. With the wind in your face, there's no finer place, than.... There are skippers and mates and rowing-club eights, just.... There are pontoons and ### and all sorts of knots, for.... Well, if inboards and outboards and dinghies you sail, The first thing you learn is the right way to bail. In a one-seat canoe, you're skipper and crew, just.... There are bridges and locks and moorings and docks, when.... There's a whirlpool and weir that you mustn't go near, when.... There's backwater places all hidden from view, And quaint little islands just waiting for you. So leave here right now, go cast off your bow, go.... Of course the version I know is a little more Traditional *BSG* While Pissing about on the river LOL Yours, Aye. Dave |
