Lyr Req: Vaughn Monroe Song - Navajo Rose?

Subject: Vaughn Monroe Song
From: GUEST,Cookie

Can you help locate title or words to this song.

I have been looking for an old Vaughn Monroe song (I believe he is the one who sang it) It goes something like this....

Way beyond the purple mountains
Where the rippling water flows
They tell the legend of Theabi (not sure of spelling)
The lovely Navajo rose

...I would appreciate any information you can give me.

Thanks, Cookie

I found a Vaughn Monroe web site once but did't bookmark it. You can probably get it on Google. Jeep

It was Lester Peabody, I think, not Vaugh Young. Here are several discography and review summaries, but lyrics nopt out there;

Lester Peabody - Big River Rag/Navajo Rose (Ecco-Fonic) Lester Peabody - Big River Rag/Navajo Rose (Ecco-Fonic)

The A-side is an amazing tune done by Lester Peabody and his Barnshakers, while on the B-side it's just Lester
and his beautiful ole Gretsch guitar, thumb picking through 'Big River Rag'. This record has got that Ecco-Fonic
sound all over it - the true sound of quality!

LESTER PEABODY
"Big River Rag"/"Navajo Rose"
EF 1004-7 7" $4.15
Two perfectly delightful guitar-pickin' instrumentals, with his swingin' backup band the Barnshakers on side A
and solo on the flip. Lester's got the flawless technique, complete assurance and beautiful tone that most of his
retro-guitar-slinging peers only dream of. (ECCO-FONIC)

       Partial track listing:
       "Big River Rag", "Navajo Rose"

KFJC new album review (August 7, 1996)
A very clean and sharp sound of Finger-Pickin' Electric Guitar with a big fat Gretsch Guitar sound that
is VERY reminiscent of Merle Travis, the guy who invented it, if I'm not mistaken ;-) (always gotta have
"that out") and this never really "takes off", it's not supposed too. Just really cool finger-pickin' guitar.
Side B is more of the same EXCEPT that this is much more of a "song type tune" as opposed to the A
side which is more guitar solo oriented. More of a Chet Atkins sound on this tune and it is very very
       pretty indeed.

I could have sworn that I came across this song (Navajo Rose) on one of the websites like lyricsworld.com recently, but apparently I did not copy it. I just tried lyricsworld and google (typing in "Navajo Rose") and struck out. I'll keep trying.

Navajo Rose

Way out beyond the purple mountains
Where the sky blue waters flow
They tell the legend of Tehabi
The lovely Navajo Rose

She was promised to Tehamo
Greatest hunter ever known
But then one day he fell in battle
And left Tehabi alone

But the Moon God heard her cry
And he carried them above
Made them two stars in the sky
Tehabi and her love . . .

Where she wept beside the river
Now a weeping willow grows
And that is the legend of Tehabi
The Lovely Navajo Rose

The story is old . . . . Tehabi . . . .

The story is new . . . . Tehamo . . .

The story is old . . . Tehamo . . .

The story is old . . . . Tehabi . . .

And that is the legend of Tehabi

The Lovely Navajo Rose

And I don't know what's the original song, and what the website owner added.....

The story-poem transcribed by Joe is uncredited. By Cross?

Not found in Allmusic; there is a "Navajo Rose" on a cd by Palmer, only the one citation, but this may not be the one sought.

Tough one!

I remember this song from childhood.

Have no information but this is one of the lyrics that comes back to me. I remember the melody and this lyric:

Far across the busy highway,
Where the weepin' willow grows,
They tell the legend of Tiabi,
The lovely Navajo rose.

She was lover to Tiamo,
Greatest warrior ever known,
And then one day he fell in battle,
And let Tiabi alone.

I wish I could hear it sung again.
The melody is haunting and beautiful.
Thank you for the lyrics.

Thank you all. I thought I was the only person on earth that would remember this song! My dad had a lot of Vaughn Monroe records and many of his songs are classics, but this one, although more obscure, has been with me since I was a kid...pushing 70 now. I was glad to get a refresher on the lyrics.

The title of the song people are remembering as 'Navajo Rose' is actually named "The Legend Of Tiabi' (1948) - Vaughn Monroe
