From: wysiwyg It has been suggested in recent threads that leads for Onstage Media, the folks who bring us Mudcat, would be appreciated. This would increase Onstage's ability to support Mudcat. Ya know, it's completely ridiculous that Max's design has not completely captured the commercial forum market by now. It should be pretty easy to do it, in fact. All we need to know to assure ourselves of this is, "How addictive is the Mudcat format itself?" And we know the answer to that-- for many of us here, it's our self-medication of choice, isn't it? Don't you think the commerical boards would love to have an audience THAT captive for their ads???? All we have to do is make sure they pay Max for what he has originated, and that they don't just copycat it. I am betting that they can't copy it without his excllent mind and programming. I'm volunteering to do whatever I can to the best of my ability. (My creative approach has had some success in marketing certain things in the past. *G*) So. Max. I've copied you on a couple of recent mails to various folks. *G* But these are just a sign that my brain is starting to hum with ideas... better and better ones to come as we get moving. *G* (Vrooom, vrrrroooommmm!) Yes, some small and medium projects would certainly be a good thing. People are already working on that. What I want to find is one REALLY BIG client who will spread Max's design so wide on the Net that Max gets to retire and think about his next fun stint in life. ~Susan

I remember Lotus Notes (Notus Lotes) and its concept for organized chat. Are other chat boards different? What would it take to set up an inter-oranizational mudcat-type forum? Additionally, if this is unique and different, I'd at the least recommend a permathread advising of that fact. Ed |

Other boards do differ but if I was to classify this site, I would tend towards calling it an excellent example of a particular (I call them linear) design of boards rather than a unique format. I'm not sure what you mean by "inter-organizational mudcat fourm" but if you mean what it takes to run it, aside from the code that Max has written, you need Cold Fusion which is something that not all web hosts provide. I think the supersearch uses Verity - not too sure on that but I think that would be an additional requirement. I guess Max could host for others... If you mean a number of organisations sharing the same code and database, I'm not sure that would be a good plan. There are a few designs that allow multiple forums or categories within the main board, e.g. thinking Mudcat, they would support a BS and Music, etc. forums as seperate entities within the main board. These could perhaps be adapted to suit multiple organisations but, to the best of my knowledge, this (the Mudcat) design does not support that. Jon |

I think Max would be pleased to discuss your interest further, and I would suggest you e-mail him via the link in the main site page. I do know that he offers hosting as well as design, and the software to transfer the format is actually pretty affordable. ~Susan |

From: Jim Dixon I have often thought that, with only a few cosmetic changes, the Mudcat format could work equally well as a gardening forum, politics forum, cooking forum, whatever. Imagine that instead of DigiTrad, there was a collection of information about garden plants, for example. You could call it DigiPlant. Works for me! Of course I'm thinking of something totally separate from the Mudcat Cafe: something installed on a different server (or maybe even the same server), having a different web address, and a superficially different appearance, but having the same software to make it run. |
