Well, click here, guest But why not do your own search? This has got nothing to do with us.

The Six O'clock Train and a Girl with Green Eyes
(John Hartford)

It's hard to concentrate on waiting
Wonder if she will know my face
Trying to remember, might have the time
Or maybe might have been the place
In an underground railroad station, just out of the rain
So much depends on the six o'clock train
And a girl with green eyes

Hands on the subway clock
Almost straight up and down
Way back in that black flat tunnel
I thought I heard a sound
Will she know me when she sees me
Or will she wait to hear my voice
Will I see her coming through the steam
In the maddening rush hour noise
In an underground railroad station, just out of the rain
So much depends on the six o'clock train
And a girl with green eyes

So silly in my nervousness
So crazy in my fears
I asked a man with a brown suit on
Does the six o'clock train stop here?
Well sir, it could be, and turned as if in pain
And I wonder maybe he like I, depending on that train
In an underground station, just out of the rain
So much depends on the six o'clock train
And a girl with green eyes

Yes, I am on the cranky side tonight. Perhaps has to do with being without a loo/toilet/commode for 3 days--peeing in the backyard just doesn't cut it.

No excuse for taking it out on everybody else, tho, huh? Sorry all.

I do get real tired of people who can't seem to just type in their title or lyric snippet into some home page or search engine--most (notice I said most) of them are so easy it is pathetic. Then, after they ask here, they often don't even come back after the answer........pointless effort also tends to make me cranky. Oh well, I'll no doubt get over it.

harpgirl, I remember one line differently. Instead of "Well sir, it could be" the recording I know goes, "He reassured me quickly".

Yes. I was rude, and I apoligize. I did not have to respond to the request, and should not have said "we."

If is any consulation, while I have yet to use the search engine, I do open the blue clickies just to compare my memory of the lyrics with the revealed truth. And while I do not always print out the words, it is suffiecient unto the day that, for a moment, you have contributed to a fleeting memory that many of those songs evoke. And I, for one, thank you for that...

...thanks, Jacob. That must be right. I had typed in a disclaimer after that phrase because it was hard to understand on my old record but I figured I'd leave it out and see if anyone corrected me. Cool! I left out the word "been" in the third line, as well.

For the record, I am not sure John's full lyrics are well represented on the web unless I've missed some site....hg

hey everyone...thanks so much for the info! toad, i did type in the lyrics in the search engine first thing...actually, i typed in John Hartford on Dogpile, found you guys, and then typed in the following on the Mudcat search engine:

Girl with green eyes six o'clock train train green eyes John Hartford (which is how i found harpgirl, who seems to be the quintessential expert on John Hartford!)

the engine provided me with many lyrics and songs of irish and other origins, but no john hartford song came up. that's when i posted here, hoping someone would know the name of the song.

i teach indoor cycling (spinning) at a club, and most of my participants are in their 50s. one guy was talking to another after class last week, and mentioned that Johnny Hartford had just passed away and that he always loved his songs and lyrics, especially the lyric "so much depends on the six o'clock train and the girl with green eyes". He told the other man he didn't remember anything else about the song, but he always loved that line.

so--i was teaching again on friday, and that's why i wanted to find the song. i was able to find it (thanks to all of you!) and play it...he came up to me afterwards with tears in his eyes (really!) and said that the song, and the lyric meant a lot to him because it reminded him of his wife who had passed away last year from cancer.

so, thanks again. you not only made me look incredibly resourceful, but you touched a couple other lives as well!

You'll find a number of John Hartford songs in this thread (click). There's a message from me toward the top of that thread - I'm trying to keep that message updated as an index to all the John Hartford songs that have been posted at Mudcat.
