Here is the blicky to the website CCFF Its free admission (except to the main concert), but you are encouraged to donate for the charities. You can either give to the collectors as the come round or buy a collection-free-zone badge for £5. There is camping for £6 per adult & £3 per kid - which is pretty reasonable. There should be plenty of concerts, sessions & singarounds going on, and its usually a great weekend. The music is mainly folk, blues & skiffle - there's a main site + fringe events in the local pubs etc. I can highly recommend it. The artists and organisers donate their services for free, and I know the organisers have been working really hard - so come along and help them to make it a success.... Anyone coming? It'd be nice to have a bit of a gathering there. Kris |

Its fascinating. English Jon - do you know Reading at all? Where would you be coming from? The festival is quite easy to find, but it depends how you come into Reading. Caversham is the north part of Reading, on the north bank of the Thames. The festival is quite close the Caversham bridge. The address given on the leaflet is Thameside Promenade, Caversham Bridge, Reading. The carpark is very close to the Holiday Inn hotel which is right next to the bridge. There should be plenty of signs pointing the way once you get close. And once you are in Reading it should be easy to get someone to direct you to Caversham Bridge. If you give me an idea which compass direction you'd be approaching from, and whether you'd be on the M4, A4 or what road then I can give you some more specific directions. Kris |

Come off at Junction 11, and follow the signs toward Reading on the A33. As you approach the town centre start looking for the signs to Caversham. You will be on what is kown as the IDR (inner distribution road), and this leads into the Caversham Road which leads to Caversham Bridge. You will pass a TGI Friday's restaurant on your right hand side at a roundabout as you get close to Cav. Go straight on at that roundabout. Keep your eyes peeled for the big Holiday Inn building which is at a roundabout on the approach to the bridge. You need to turn left into Richfield Avenue at that roundabout (ie do not cross the bridge itself), and then first right just immediately past the hotel. That turning takes you down toward the river, and the public carpark is on your left. The information point & entrance for the festival should be obvious at that point. Your really crucial thing is to be approaching the correct bridge (there are only 2, Caversham Bridge and Reading Bridge). If you actually cross the river from south to north then you have gone too far. If you are at a bridge and there's no Holiday Inn then its the wrong bridge & you need to just flag someone down for directions back to the other one. If you're not on the M4, but are on the A4 then similarly just head for the town centre & then pick up signs for Caversham. Best of luck - and if you get lost then I'm really really really sorry....... If you do get lost then there should be no problem finding someone to direct you to Caversham Bridge - its not an obscure location. Kris |

It was an interesting weekend. We had 12 people for dinner on Saturday which went off well despite the unscheduled interlude with the Dyno-rod man (don't ask!). On of my wife's now retired former colleagues who plays guitar, banjo and mandolin was impressed to find Davey Graham, his idol, playing on the CD player when he arrived with the Ken Colyer skiffle group next. At some time towards midnight when I was having a post-coffee Metaxas and others were making inroads on my selection of malt whiskies, someone was rash enough to insist we demonstrated the pianola. I believe while Herself pedalled barefoot and without a safety belt, I rendered Pennies from Heaven and You made me love you like Jolson and Don't be Cruel like Elvis, but it might have been the other way round, as people suddenly remembered they had to get home to pay the baby sitter (funny I though all their children were grown-up). Subsequently someone said it was the highlight of the evening, someone else said it was like a scene from the Addams Family! Any way it was too dull on Sunday to take out guest to a garden so we headed straight for the skiffle session at the Clifton Arms. The first band had just started when we arrived, the singer sounded a bit flat, my companions thought ( I couldn't possibly comment, given my lack of musical ability) and the place was full of people in Welsh costumes who soon left (an Ap-Morris dance side perhaps?). We stayed for a couple of hours. Being the designated non-driver I was forced on to the Brakspear's Special while the other two drank the pub out of mineral water (the shame of it!) despite forays by various people to the cellar in search of new stock. We heard four bands, unfortunately the PA was at a good volume for hearing the music but too quiet to hear the announcements, so I'm not clear who was who, especially as some of the personnel were in more than one ensemble. I think King Street Smith was the bluesy band that came on just before we left at about 2.20 . Herself awarded them the top marks for vocals without any prompting from me. The pub was quite full (hardly big enough for two teachest basses to pass!) but mostly seemed to be regulars not taking much notice of the music. Only ourselves and the bands and their connections (as the racing fraternity would say) were listening to or applauding the music. Mine was the only Mudcat T-shirt in evidence and evoked no reactions. I was sorry we couldn't stay longer but a fridge full of left-overs and an opened bottle of wine ("it won't keep") waiting for us meant we didn't see the other bands. Nice to see washboard, swannee whistle and spoons in operation. A kazoo with funnel went past me into the dining room but I didn't see it in action. So we never actually got meet RtS etc, so here's a late hello - "HELLO". It was nice to see Wandering Minstrel again. And KitKat was there on Sunday night to play - but to my deep shame we didn't stay to listen as we were frozen stiff & had to get Hamm fed & in bed at a reasonable time for schl next day. KitKat reports that their set went well (if a bit shortened due to time constraints). I know they will have been excellent because I've seen them before. I think overall things were a bit disorganised at the festival, but we enjoyed it anyway. Shame we missed meeting Jim & Jon, but they were obviously fully occupied!! The festival was sharing a field with a regatta - hence the rowing 8s thing. It was quite bizarre to see people carrying their great long rowing thingies through the festival site. Obviously they were being hotly persued by rampant folkie-blokies. Anyways - next festival for us is also fairly local - Long Wittenham. That's another charity festival but is smaller (pub-based I think) & only on 1 day (with camping). Anyone going to that one? - I think its in a couple of weeks time - will start a thread for it when I find out for sure. Kris
