Whoopee! Finally on Paltalk! But problem

After about six months or so of trying, I've finally managed to register on Paltalk! Thanks to the guidance of Keeflol at the Palstock (Live and Unplugged) site. As evidence of my registered status I have a welcome-aboard email from Paltalk.

Howsomever, don't expect to hear me there just yet. I've got sound card problems that I'm working on.

My new nickname on Paltalk (DaveO and Dave_O were taken) is Daveoesterr.

I re-installed Paltalk and found my membership still intact with password. The pop-ups are once again freezing my system. SIGH! After the Utah Phillips Concert, I hate to cancel it again. Silly question: Could AOL be the problem?

Bill D

Uninstall Paltalk. Reboot.
1. click Start/Run
2. enter "regedit" in the field and click ok
3 in the left of the window, double click HKEY_CURRENT_USER
4. Double click "Software".
5. Scroll down and look for Paltalk
6. Right click Paltalk, then select Delete
(If you don't see Paltalk under the software group, then go to step 7.)
7. No re-boot your PC, and reinstall Paltalk. (Following applied to me, because Paltalk kept telling me "incorrect password" for DaveO and Dave_O) Try a different name this time outside of the (whatever previous nicknames). You can always try to add that name(s) later as a second name, but it may show "in use".

Those are the instructions that let me connect. If you were trying to use "Bill D", that's generic enough that maybe someone beat you to it, as someone evidently beat me to DaveO and Dave_O. Good luck, Bill, and let me know what results you get.

Dave, the removal of that key in the registry was suggested by me (later corrected by Ivan B as I'd ommitted software) in November last year. Not to worry - good to see you have got there.

Evidently, Jon, you didn't beat heavily enough to get through the bone head. KeefLoL did, and gave me blow-by-blow instructions. And he did some research in Paltalk and told me that (a) the nicknames DaveO and Dave_O were assigned to others, with different email addresses, and (B) there was no-one with my email address registered at Paltalk.

In any case, my thanks go out to all of those who gave suggestions.

I may be around later Liz. I've got to watch the highlights to see the mess England made in the cricket first. Then possibly a chat on ICQ before I get round to Paltalk.

hmmm...I have DONE the registry editing, removing all possible traces of old PalTalk entries...but I didn't re-boot before re-installing...*wondering if that is the secret?* I guess I'll try THAT soon...

Bill, I have taken note of what Dave O said and tried to use the "Add Pal" to check on entries. I can not find any membership matching the email address I have for you but there are Members BillD and Bill D.

So, Sins, feel like life just passed you by? I haven't heard about anything special with AOL, but I guess ya never know.

I think it was BillD who once posted a little free program which you can install to prevent the popups. Maybe that would help in your situation? I downloaded it, but haven't installed and now do not remember the name. Maybe Bill will come in here and help us out.:-)

Good luck,

kat

kat, I don't know if BillD has suggested any or not, but I've recommended PopUp Killer in several threads and those who've used it seem to like it. It's here:

PopUp Killer

OH-KAY!!!

I'm successfully on Paltalk, with (as far as I can tell) all problems resolved. I was on last night, in Neil's Barn, for about an hour and a half; sang three songs. Fun, fun.

I've downloaded and installed the PopUp Killer software, just a few minutes ago. Haven't had experience yet as to its efficacy.

Now, to cut to the chase: When are Catters going to be on? I gather it isn't the every-night thing it used to be about six months ago. I need to know because my Beautiful Wife has some weird idea that she has some claim to my time and at attention, and I propose to be offline either Saturday or Sunday nights to feed that delusion. When am I most likely to find Catters there?

What's the current name of the room? I know it will be adult, and know to display that. Please advise.

there are several other possible programs to prevent pop-ups..one that gets a lot of comments is Naviscope ....it does other things too, and for now is free...

(also other possible programs at Pricelessware

and more pricelessware, just a different place in the page

the Pop-Up Killer program is listed here, so it must be ok.....

now, I have to try ONCE more to install PalTalk

Dave, I don't think there is any regular Mudcat do now. The only room with a Mudcat name that I know is still opened is the Mudcat Concert room which Sandy now opens for general folk/ blues as well as for concerts.

Other room's that I can think of that are "owned" by 'catters are, Alison's (Jiggie) "Celtic Friends", dwditty's "dw and friends", Frank/Francy's(Toledo) Toledo folk and my "Squiggle's Folk and Blues" and some of these are opened very infrequently.

I'm not sure that there is any day when 'catters are most likely to be on-line. Time wise, I tend to see more catters around between midnight and 4 am GMT.

If none of the rooms I have mentioned are open, there is a good chance of finding someone in one of the "Live and Unplugged" rooms of which Neil's Barn Jam is one. Most of these rooms do give some indication that they are live and normally near the top of the list (there are quite a few rooms but maybe only one or two are open at any time and generally speaking, everyone supports the rooms that are open at the time rather than trying to open more rooms).

I have the list of LIve Unplugged room names from their website. I'll just operate off that for now. Thanx.

I'm thinking about programing for another concert. More on this later.

well, as I expected...PalTalk will still NOT operate on my machine...I cleared everything I could, and started over, and I do NOT get the 'original' registration box..it acts as though it finds some settings already there...I get the 'accept the rules' box, and then I get the sign-on box!,,...but it will not allow me to register a NEW user, and will not function with the names I tried originally. I get runtime 216 errors, I get "driver did not generate a valid OPEN callback", and I get "this program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down"

I get no answers from email, except automated ones about their FAQ page, I am unable to use their MsDos telnet check...and the FAQ page says."if you don't get a 'hello', you may not be able to use Paltalk from the address & computer you are at"...with NO explanation!

one interesting fact...when I do a search for any use of the text Paltalk on my machine, it says there is one in Windows\system.dat, which makes me wonder if there are leftover configuration pieces form some earlier try....

grumpity, grumpity, grump

(yes, I have tried again to get a reply from some Paltalk techie...we shall see)

Bill, system.dat is part of the registry. Try opening regedit and doing a search for Paltalk. Perhaps there are other keys in the registry that we haven't found.

BillD, did you go through the regedit routine I posted? That, I think, is what cleared me away.

Your description of your difficulties sounds in all details like mine.

If that doesn't help, I recommend your going to the Live and Unplugged site. The url is as follows:
http://kristen9768.tripod.com/liveandunplugged2/

Find your way to the messages/live paltalk help (or verbiage like that) and ask keeflol to help. He's the one who got me straigtened away. He's VERY knowledgeable, and VERY helpful.
