Any mudcatters out there near Cape Cod? My wife and I are going to go to the Cape for a weekend in July, specifically Falmouth Mass., from July 19 - 22. A nice long weekend. there's an Irish Pub there called Liam Maguire's and a good friend, Danny Quinn, is playing there that weekend. I'd sure like to buy a catter a pint while I'm there!! Anybody???

Frank

Frank,

You'll find that in New England the musicians all play very simply. This is because they have to keep one hand free to slap mosquitos. In some cases it is possible to play a rudimentary outline of a tune while slapping on the offbeat. Bluegrassers who chord in the background on the offbeat have developed this styly of backup in order to have part of the band slapping at all times. Downbeat for the backup, offbeat for the lead. This rythmic slapping also eliminates the need for a bodhran in the band.

Wish I was going with you! I haven't been back to the cape in nine years.

Chip A.

MMario,

I, too, am a hair-legger. Actually, I'm not technically because I didn't grow up past Chatham. Grew up in Barnstable village, though. WIsh I could be there when you are, Frank, but not this year.

I grew up off cape in Scituate. My mother & dad & sister lived in Marston's Mills till 10 years ago. But I don't know what a hair legger is. Can someone tell me? I miss the water and I WANT A REAL FRIED CLAM!

My wife and I are also taking a trip to Cape MAY in June, wow, two months, two Capes!! Anyway, ever since I started this thread I've been humming "On the Way to Cape May" in my head. Anyone know the lyrics? It was originally done by Al Alberts and the Four Aces (I think). I had a recording of it once upon a time. Anyone??

Frank whothinkshejustthreadcreepedhisownthread....sheesh!

That's me, Chip A. from Scituate. I forgot I'm home now and on Tish's computer. Last real clam with belly intact was at Baxters Wharf. Damn, been in the inland south nearly 30 years and I can still smell the salt air and feel the swell under my dory!

Having grown up in the West where we only have Rocky Mountain oysters, which I wouldn't touch, I didn't know what whole belly FRESH clams were until we moved to New England. On the way up Roger's mom's place, one time, we stopped at my frist real honest-to-goodness clam shack, had the whole bellies and all and was promptly green aorund the gills for the rest of the day. They were too fresh for this mountain/prairie womon!**BG**

Have fun, that's a beautiful area.

Frank, I will be back east around that time too. Some MN friends and I have rented a house in Provincetown for a week starting on Saturday the 21st of July. So you wouldn't be drinking beer with a local 'catter, but a fellow visitor (though a true-bred Vermont Yankee)--does that count??

If so, PM me and we'll work out the details. Are you there all three nights?

What does your friend play? (well, Irish, I suppose, but any other hints?)

Beth

Check the Boston Globe Calender on Thrusday when the time draws nearer, I believe there are a couple of coffee houses in the area but not sure. Maybe one in Woods Hole & one in Falmouth. There's also an Irish session (don't know the day) at the Ole Village Inn (or something like that) run by one of the great living banjo players, Bill Black, it's on rt.28 West Dennis. I often go Cape side to visit my mom or to drop the kids &/or dog off for an exciting weekend. Not a Cape native(Boston born & bred) but spent neary every summer of my youth there, miss being on the salt water. Barry

Just wanted to refresh this thread one more time to invite any and all Catters to meet up with my wife and I if they happen to be in the Cape Cod area next weekend. My friend, Danny Quinn, is performing at Liam Maguires Irish Pub in Falmouth Mass and I will be there on Thursday, Friday AND Saturday nights!! (July 19,20,21)

If I even meet one of you in person, it will double the number of Catters I've met! Sad isn't it? Dontcha wanna help out a poor "lonely" catter? hmmmm?????

Have a lovely trip! I was born and raised the first three years of my life in P-town. I go back every year, but usually in April and October. :-)

Pseudolus: Am vacationing in East Sandwich (M.Mario's old stomping grounds, I think) and may have a chance to visit Liam Maguire's on Thursday, July 19. Is there a way I could pick you out in the crowd? If you see a 6-foot-3 overweight and awkward-looking fellow with a full beard and a short ponytail, it could be me.
That's good advice from Barry Finn on Woods Hole, which is adjacent to Falmouth (I think it's legally part of the town of Falmouth, but has a distinct identity) -- Capt. Kidd's pub had a good lineup of entertainment last time I looked; there's a community hall that holds contra dances and folk concerts, and there are often folks playing guitar and singing outside the oceanographic institute.

Pinetop - where? (Just curious)

And yes, Woods Hole is part of Falmouth. Not sure what the legal status is - Forestdale, South Sandwich and East Sandwich have no actual legal identity - Woods Hole may.

Pinetop,
Excellent news!! Yep, I'm not too difficult to pick out of the crowd. I'm 6'1", could lose a few pounds myself, brown hair, glasses, and I'll have a beer in my hand!! Oh yeah, I'll be with the best looking woman in the place, my wife!!

If there's a lot of 6'1" big guys drinking beer there, just ask Danny Quinn, he'll point me out!!

Hope to see you there!! Frank

Ha! I just looked at the date only, when it turned up when I was looking for something totally unrelated, and realized I know Frank, know Liam's, know Danny, and plan to head there this weekend too. Just don't know the year.....
