Niamh Parsons, will be at Paddy Burke's, 132 Portland St. Boston, MA, THIS MONDAY, June 18, at 9:00pm. Parking on street nearby, (no event at the Fleet Center that night.)A few blocks between North Station & Haymarket T stations. She'll probably do 2 half hour sets, & we'll have floor singing before or after each set. There will probably be a dozen or more of her students from the Gaelic Roots festival. So bring a song, a poem, a tin whistle, or just your ears... For info, call me, Judy (781) 891 - 0457

This replaces the week's regular Wednesday singing session!

Niamh is an Irish singer with a magical voice. Her 2 most recent CD's are mostly traditional songs. She's in Boston for the Gaelic Roots festival, will be at the Blackthorne Tavern in Easton, MA, Sunday June24, & at Music By the Bay house concert in Assonnet, MA, Tuesday June 26. More info on the web for those...

Subject: Niamh Parsons Monday in Boston!

From: Peg
Date: 15-Jun-01 - 07:54 PM

This Monday, June 18 at 9 pm, at Paddy Burke's Pub in Boston.

132 Portland Street (near North Station)

Suggested donation $10 ($3 for members of the Boston Folk and Traditional Singers' Club, who are sponsoring this event).

Usually when we have a guest, we start with a go round of a few people singing songs (usually Shay or Mick--before he went back to Ireland-- asks a few people to sing); then the guest performer does a "set"; then we sing some more, then they sing some more...

Hope you all can mak

Fergie, Fhir a' Bháta sounds like one I've never heard before, so I'll request it, & will say hello from you & the Goilineers. (I hope to get to the Goilin Club or the Fork Hill weekend someday soon...)

Barry, Woh! That would be great to see & hear you again! People keep asking about you. This Wednesday Shay asked about you & today Connie asked about you... I told them (per the mudcat) that you made it to Mystic for a day, so you must be doing pretty well. This Monday would be a good night to come, since we'll start singing at 9:00, rather than 10 or 10:30 (or not at all, since there have been too many nights lately when there aren't enough people to get singing...) So, don't tire yourself out at Old Songs!

Peg, Thanks for the post - I forgot to mention prices. They've gone up a wee bit, since we're averaging $3-$4 a week from members lately. Unless some miracle happens & we pick up some more regulars, we're going to have to discuss cutting down to 2 weeks a month plus an extra week when anyone from out of town gives us a few days notice that they'll be here. Averaging 3 or 4 people a week, is just not enough to justify a weekly club, especially when Shay & I are usually 2 of the 3 or 4 people, (& I'm burning out...) Any suggestions are welcome. It's a good thing we cancelled the club for U2. The bartender said all 4 floors were packed after the four U2 concerts, & it was like having 4 St. Patrick's Days in a row!

Niamh has been to the club, last year at this time to join her friend who was a guest singer at the time, she's quite the character & a great singer to boot.

Hi Judy, I do believe you're familar with "Fhir a' Bháta" it may be you're just not familar with how's it's spelled out. Ask Maureen I think she's sings it, though my memory may not have improved after all (& I thought I was getting better). Sally Coyne (Briddy Fitzgerald's sis) does a lovely Irish version. At some point you might think of getting Briddy as a guest, she a great Sean Nos singer from Conamara. Barry

Barry, Your musical knowlege amazes me! I can't remember anything in Gaelic, so I realized I should look at Niamh's CDs... It's spelled Fear a Bhata on her Blackbirds & Thrushes, & it is familiar & compelling. I think you're right about Maureen singing it, but I never would've realized that on my own... Sounds quite different with a full band...

Bridget Fitzgerald is on our list of potential guest performers, but only being able to hire about 3 per year, we're giving out of town/country performers higher priority.

The Irish Cultural Center is starting to hire guest performers, & since they have alot bigger audience, (average about 25), they'll probably be able to get to Bridget before we do... They had the Bedlam Boys (Gregor & ?) a month or so ago, & I'm pretty sure they're having Jimmy Crowley from the Gaelic Roots festival, next Friday, June 22nd.

Judy; too bad about the low turn out lately, but keep in mind it does slow down in the summer (the instrumental sessiuns do, too).

I have not been around lately as I am in packing and moving hell! Hope to get back there soon!
