17 Jun 01 - 04:13 AM (#485336) Subject: Two in a Bar event July 19 UK From: Deni I see in the EFDSS newsletter that they are planning an event on July 19 to draw media and public attention to the 'two in a bar' rule. They plan that 'portable & unamplified bands' will turn up and play at various venues and be thrown out, no, sorry, 'politely asked to leave', thus illustrating the rule. They say that a full medai briefing will precede the day. The MU, the Campaign for Live Music and others are backing the venture. Do Mudcatters want to join them? To those that think this is a good thing, great, but I have just read a letter in the Musicians Union magazine saying that scrapping the rule will mean publicans having to pay higher wages for larger bands, not being able to afford it and therefore using musicians who will play for beer money. This will cause cash problems for already pressured musicians. ( I find myself sypathising with both sides on this one.) Cheers Deni |

The interpretation of the "two in a bar rule" that interprets it as meaning that more than two people can't sing or play in a bar even if the landlord is agreeable is probably legally unsustainable, in the light of current Human Rights legislation. But, understandably, publicans feel reluctant to risk their livelihoods by challenging it, when stroppy council offiocials get the bit between their teeth (and sometimes when rival landlords want to play dirty by raising a complaint.)
An official ruling that informal singarounds and suchlike are perfectly legal would in no way interfere with the working prospects of musicians. In fact it would almost certainly help produce more work, since it would mean more venues. Pubs would be more likely to test out the customers reaction by allowing a session on a quiet night, and then maybe they'd go ahead and book people for a paid gig on a bigger night. (And I think that would be the general view of the Musicians Union, though no doubt there are some members who might not see it that way.)
Anyway, this should be good. (But where is Shambles? Haven't seen a post from him for some time. Someone stick a link in this thread to the lengthy discussions we've had about them, normally involving him - which I suspect have been part of the background to this action.) |

As The Shambles suggests in that first thread, there's no reason why people shouldn't take part in this in places well outside London.
That'll ensure some local publicity - but the London ones are the important ones for getting national publicity, and embarrassing the government, or getting support from the Mayor and so forth, which would in itself be embarrassing for the government, (which I suspect is one reason why it might actually be forthcoming). So I think those of us in range of London should probably make the effort of travelling in if we can.
Any suggestions for relevant songs? As well as "Tony don't allow no music played in here". |
