The booklet that comes ith is brilliant. As with any box set, there will always be some material that individuals feel should have been included but failed to make the cut. For example, where is "The Broomfield Hill" from "Landfall"? This has to be one of the most stunning songs MC has ever recorded. Any lover of MC et al should buy this immediately. I got mine from Amazon as it can be very difficult to get quality stuff in New Zealand. |

I have also all of his solo (+ Swarbrick +Watersons) albums and without doing an actual count I think about 50 % of the tracks are new to me (if I count as 'new' a life version of a known Carthy song). Slightly less than 25% if I only count new song I have never heard yet from Carthy. The notes to the songs in the booklet are all new and very good. It was worht buying for me though I would have preferred a volumes only with new material. Wolfgang |

Of course it's easier to put together a set for live performance than find the right mix of new tracks for an album, but I find I seldom play our more recent Carthy CDs. Oh, and remember that Free Reed (NO, don't get me going on the subject of Neil Wayne . . ) who did the Carthy Chronicles have also put out a Peter Bellamy box set . . G. |

(Anyway, what about all that period when he was singing with a fake rural accent? There's several albums like that, and Carthy will be the first to admit that it's a bit embarrassing to look back on!) I think signs of life captures the live feel pretty well George, but you can never get a CD quite like a live performance can you? Saw MC and NW with Chris Parkinson at Mayflower folk club last week. Bloody marvelous. Just wish they wouldn't keep doing "midnight on the water", which I hate. Just a personal thing. EJ |

We might not "buy" some of this work if issued new now, but this is a musical biography and to leave out the lesser tracks would be like bad editing. They are a part of our history and even the "bad" sounds pretty damn good to me! How many other artists would you listen to with a repertoire that has evolved over 36+ years? And I have never noticed a "cod" rural accent, but it's preferable to a phoney American one. The set isn't really issued with casual buyers in mind, just as most exhaustive sets aren't, more for fans who want to know as much as possible about an artist's origins and influences. MC fans will love it, others who are mildly interested won't be disappointed either. |

Free Reed haven't put out a 'Greatest Hits' but a collection that shows his work through the years, and it includes many recordings not on his CDs. So for any MC fan, it's well worth having. If there were a greatest hits set, we'd all have them wouldn't we? A great booklet comes with it also. I have been listening to it constantly since I got it. I love it! I am listening to it now. I do love seeing Martin live. Now Dick Gaughan is an artist who is definitely best live. Concerning his box set Martin recently told me that he thinks some of it is very good and some of it is downright weird, but it is all him, and all part of a long - if not always sensible journey. He also said, "It's certainly truthful because I decided to stay out of the selection process so that I wouldn't be tempted to try and edit my past in any way".

My point is that while a lot of this stuff if fantastic archive material for serious fans, it may come as a surprise/disapointment for those looking for an introduction to Carthy and his work. Having said that there's some fabulous stuff on there too. I think I already mentioned the ANC anthem, but that really is worth 40 quid in itself. Anyway, MC has been a bigger musical influence on me than just about anybody else ever, and is indirectly reponsible for me being in debt to ken stevens music for the next four years (they had a guitar that sounded almost like his) George, I'm just off Mill Road, Cambridge. Both have made some "essential" recordings (and in Gaughan's case it's certainly not just the Trad/Modern material division, his "Different Kind of Love Song" is an album I class as Essential. Carthy's comment sounds typical of the man. Les: Good to see the "shared view" on "Midnight". Why is it Kavana isn't more widely appreciated?? (Well, having had an agent who quoted telephone numbers as fees for a while may not have helped!) G. |
