PART ONE
Captain Jack was a young man when he went to sea.

Now I loved my Jackie, his bride I would be,

Now his ship was in need of a captain one day,

He took charge of the rigging and soon sailed away.

But my Jackie was not there when I went to sea,

And this is the tale, the crew told to me.

PART TWO
It was almost eight bells and Jack had the watch,
He was finning and scaling the fish he had caught,
When out of the sea there rose such a tune,
As he had not heard by the light of the moon.

He looked o'er to the watr and what saw he there,
But a beautiful maiden with gold in her hair,
She had a gown made of seaweed and a crown on her head,
As he stared at the Memaid she quietly said,

"I have followed your ship for many a mile.
One day the sea reflected your smile.
And I'll give you my kingdom, eternally,
If you'll marry this Mermaid who lives in the sea."

Well, Jack was in love with the beautiful girl
He jumped over the side into the watery swirl.
She then took his arm and she led him away
And we circled those waters 'till dawn the next day.

We tolled the bell loud, we tolled the bell long,
And the looks on our faces were saddened and drawn,
When, out of the sea, Jackie rose like a King,
And this is the message he begged us to bring.

" I have long loved the Lady who lives on the land,
But my life with the mermaid is ever so grand,
Won't you go to my Lady, go and ask her for me,
May I marry this mermaid who lives in the sea?"

And that was the tale I heard from the crew.
My tears they were many, my choices were few.
I went down to the sea, the ship's bell to ring
And this is the song that I was heard to sing,

PART THREE
"Captain Jack was a young man when he went to sea.
Oh, me young ladies, go and kiss him goodbye.
He was barely a child, of twenty and three,
Oh tell him young ladies, go and tell him for me,
He can marry the mermaid that lives in the sea,
Tell him young ladies, go and tell him for me,
He can marry the mermaid that lives in the sea."
There are three parts to this song with different melodies and I think modulated in key. The third ppart is the same as the first. SM

Dag nabbit! I just knew I had forgotten something!!!!!!Anguish anguish, more anguish!!!

In part one, between the third and fourth verses, there is this verse...

When three years had passed and his ship had returned, Oh me young ladies, go and kiss him goodbye. I went down to the sea for the man I had earned. Oh tell him young ladies, go and tell him for me, He can marry the Mermaid that lives in the sea.

Finny, don't be put off. Many songs are posted in threads in this forum, which may at some stage (or not) be harvested for the Digitrd database.

So before doing all the hard work involved in posting, it is wise to search in the Digitrad and Forum Search box at the top of the Forum page. This will, as it says, search both the Forum and the Digitrad.

Your next step now could be to work out (using the FAQ again) how to submit the tune to Us... :0)

I tried looking for the thread and couldn't find the darn thing! Otherwise I wouldn't have bothered. The Royal "We" will have to wait for the melody. I have a microphone attatched to the other pc, but we haven't yet got the program. But when I do get the program, I would be more than happy to get the melody for you.

I'm not put off, but when I oculdn't find the thread, I figured it was one you didn't have. Guess I should have known better, huh?

It isn't always easy to find things, but in this case the "Digitrad and Forum Search" found all the threads I listed when asked for captain jack.  I often put cross-references in threads; it isn't intended to discourage anyone (unless they're long-standing regulars who ought to know better) but rather to make it easier for other people to find relevant information in the future.

As a rule I also explain how I found the other stuff, but in this case Finny very sensibly asked about posting lyrics in another thread, and was referred to the FAQ and advised always to do a search first, so I felt confident that he would not be confused or worried by my contribution.

Be welcome, Finny, and contribute to the growing resource we have here; please always identify your sources, though, so that people know what's what.  The more background information you can provide, the better, really; and of course a song is incomplete without its tune, particularly when it's a modern one and unfamiliar to most people.

There's also useful advice about posting tunes in the FAQ; as a rule, it's best to do it in the simplest form possible, but there are lots of ways round it.  If you can't handle notation yet, make MMario do it for you!

Thankyou so much. I actually didn't search in the threads. I didn't realise for someone reason that that is where I had to search (although, I verily know this now). I actually searched for Captain Jack and nothing came up. When I searched for it through the forum though, I did see that it already did exist. Woops! Oh well, it's a great song anyway.

And I will look, when I get the time at the FAQ about posting tunes. I'm pretty busy with full time work and uni and SCA, so I will get to it eventually.
