Reading without Posting? README

18 Jun 01 - 01:06 PM (#486054)
Subject: Reading without Posting? README
From: wysiwyg

The purpose of this thread is to try to get a picture of the extent of Mudcat usage among people who tend to visit without posting. The information will be used in connection with documenting various Mudcat statistics. This, in turn, will help support Mudcat's continued presence online.

Documentation will NOT include any individual's identity. Participation will NOT result in any spam.

You can help this process by simply hitting the submit button below to submit a blank message. It would also be helpful to know, however:

1. How much time do you spend at Mudcat in an average week?

2. What time of day (within your own time zone) does this generally occur?

3. What time is it now, in your time zone?

4. Are you usually at home or at work when visiting?

5. Are you usually multi-tasking when you visit?

6. Aside from the music community, what do you enjoy about Mudcat's structure, design, and features?

If you prefer to e-mail me rather than post, you can click HERE to e-mail me.

THANKS VERY MUCH FOR PARTICIPATING.

~Susan

How much time: varies greatly. Sometimes way too much (like 3 or 4 hours a day)...other times not at all...who knows how much in an average week???

Any time of day, but more in the evening and after supper.

It is 5:45 pm in the eastern time zone now.

Both. I work at home.

Yes, sort of...

I enjoy the whole setup. I enjoy the humour and all the interesting characters, such as Spaw or Mousethief, and I enjoy making new friends here, and I enjoy the PM's now and then.

Usually I just visit to look up song lyrics, midafternoon through late evening 21:00 (sometimes even *during* rehearsals with the band present) -- it's 16:15 now & no rehearsal, home IS my workplace; & I don't know what came over me today to make me glance through listings; don't usually multi-task.

1. How much time do you spend at Mudcat in an average week?
       Probably 6 - 10 hours.

2. What time of day (within your own time zone) does this generally occur? ?
       Could be almost any time.

3. What time is it now, in your time zone??
       Roughly 7:15 PM

4. Are you usually at home or at work when visiting? ?
       Yes!

5. Are you usually multi-tasking when you visit? ?
       Only if I'm at work.

6. Aside from the music community, what do you enjoy about Mudcat's structure, design, and features? ?
Max has done an outstanding job of choosing the right mix of features and navigational widgets to make the Mudcat site easy to use. There is much here that I would change but my suggestions have already been posted in the appropriate threads.

------------------------

Having said all that, I personally feel that Mudcat is undervalued by even it's most devoted users. I can't help but feel that there is grant money available to maintain Mudcat and the Digital Tradition and help it to become even more than it has been. Funding sources in the U.S. might include the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA), The Smithsonian Institution, The Library of Congress or one of the major universities with strong folk music departments. Who knows? maybe the U.N. has money considering the international nature of the site. The cost of maintaing Mudcat may be a lot for a small business to handle but in the larger world sense it's very innexpensive to maintain. A quarter million a year or so is a mere pittance to the big funding organizations.

The right sort of pitch would have to be put together but there seem to be enough experienced intellectuals hanging about here to get the job done.

I usually spend 1-2 hours a day visiting here. Most often here 6 to 8 a.m., around 4p.m., or between 10pm and midnight, EST, depending on what my schedule is that day. I frequently consult the DT for lyrics, and I enjoy reading and posting about music when I feel I can be of help. I enjoy the BS postings about families, relationships, health concerns of various members and their loved ones. I really like postings about upcoming festivals and concerts, like the recent Webcast of Waterson/Carthy. (Thanks!) I don't think you can really call what I do multitasking. It's more like I'm doing homework or something and get bored or distracted and come here to see what's going on. Very habit-forming. Plus I feel like I know some of you and enjoy the social aspect of the Mudcat. Sharon

I found Mudcat about 4 months ago....2-1/2 months ago my husband of 40 years died unexpectedly....can't tell you how many times just browsing through the incredible breadth of postings here has gotten me thru bad times. I usually find something to post about, but always enjoy reading way more than I post to....

1. How much time do you spend at Mudcat in an average week? Varies...7-10 hours, probably

2. What time of day (within your own time zone) does this generally occur? Evening to late evening

3. What time is it now, in your time zone? 10:17PM

4. Are you usually at home or at work when visiting? At home

5. Are you usually multi-tasking when you visit? Multi-what?

6. Aside from the music community, what do you enjoy about Mudcat's structure, design, and features?

As I live way out in the country, and have little chance to share music with others, I just like emmersing myself in the free-flowing interest in songs, instruments, gigs, etc. Great sense of community, great sense of humor....I don't feel I know anyone very well yet, so sometimes feel a bit shy about posting, but I hope in time that will change. And I am continually blown away by the incredible amount of knowledge, popular and arcane, that is encompassed on this site. And the willingness to share it....

Thanks to all who make this happen, thanks to all who contribute...

For people who DON'T USUALLY POST??? Too bad!

1. How much time do you spend at Mudcat in an average week?

Way too much! I don't even know. :)

2. What time of day (within your own time zone) does this generally occur?

Anywhen. I don't keep regular hours. I tend to go on mudcat first thing when I turn on the computer, and refresh variously all day, as I am working. But sometimes I go straight to work without going on the net.

3. What time is it now, in your time zone?

1:23 am. (See what I mean?)

4. Are you usually at home or at work when visiting?

Both. But sometimes I'm not working. ;)

5. Are you usually multi-tasking when you visit?

Always. I tend to read more than one page at once, and talk on instant messengers, and work, and...

6. Aside from the music community, what do you enjoy about Mudcat's structure, design, and features?

I find myself wishing for this simple interface when I am at other message boards, and especially when reading newsgroups with text-based newsreaders! Being able to PM is also important, as it helps to get to know people privately as well as publicly, which brings me back more often. The only things I'd change would be to have the option to go back to the thread you posted from when posting instead of to the main listing, auto-formatting of links, and adding a link next to each poster's name on a thread to send them a PM. (Right now, the poster's name links to a search on that name, I would prefer to be able to PM straight from a thread, rather than going through a few pages and forgetting how to spell the name in the meantime.)

Hi Susan,

I read but do not post in the forum. It's 9:15 am presently (in my area). I enjoy many of the articles on the forum. I haven't really noted time spent in the forum to answer that question and the time I enter is too variable to pin down. It is done from home and I am not usually doing anything other than reading articles of interest.

I think that answers all the questions you asked.

Best of luck with your survey.

Regards,

K.

However, in contrast with others on this thread, I find the interface with this forum clunky in the extreme. I wish it were a Usenet newsgroup so I could read it & post to it in a civilized manner using a threaded newsreader. If it were, e.g., I would have been able to read in the questionnaire & answer it point by point, instead of noting the questions with a pencil in order to avoid mousing my way back & forth from here to the top. Perhaps, however, there are some amenities I am ignorant of.

JoeF, I think both systems have their advantages. I like the ability to quote and threading can certainly be useful where sub-topics crop up - with this system it is more likely IMO for a thread to wander completely off topic and never return.

The downside with the threaded systems seems to be that it doesn't take too "sub threads" before things start dissapearing way off to the right of the screen.

I did once ask whether the choice of threaded or linear formats did have any impact on the feel of the forum as I felt the threaded one is likely to encorage shorter to the point answers to points raised and the linear one was more likely to encourage more of a sort of free for all type conversation but I can't remember anyone voicing an opinion on this.

Why are some frequent posters responding to this survey?...

1) anywhere from 0 to 10, average maybe 2 2) midnight or later 3) 12:55am 4) home 5) single tasking 6) I like the international aspect, making the world a smaller place, learning about history, politics, attitudes, slang, etc. of other countries.

--) I don't post much, because the forum can be like a black hole, sucking up all my time. If I get involved in a thread, I feel compelled to return frequently, & I just don't have that kind of time. And the people who do have plenty of time, have already posted most of what I would've posted. So I read frequently, but post infrequently...

1. How much time do you spend at Mudcat in an average week? Some weeks I don't get here at all, but we'll say I average 2 hours.

2. What time of day (within your own time zone) does this generally occur? Great variation, weekends mostly, but some evenings.

3. What time is it now, in your time zone? 1:30 PM EST

4. Are you usually at home or at work when visiting? mostly home

5. Are you usually multi-tasking when you visit? No, unless I am at work.

6. Aside from the music community, what do you enjoy about Mudcat's structure, design, and features? All of it is so easy to use. I like being able to trace and the ability to find old threads by date or title. Digitrad is a great help. The people are great. I get lots of great tips for guitar playing here.

I would love to find a site this fantastic on country music.
