I found this broadside at The Bodleian Library. Do any of you have the original melody for this in ABC form or regular music?

Terry

THE FARMER

Come each jolly fellow who loves to be mellow
Attend unto me and sit easy
One jorum in quiet my lads we will try it
Dull thinking will make a man crazy

For here I’m king I’ll drink dance and sing
Let no man appear as a stranger
But show me the ass that refuses his glass
And I’ll order him hay in a manger

By ploughing and sowing by reaping and mowing
Kind nature supplies me with plenty
I've a cellar well stored and a plentiful board
And my garden affords every dainty

Were it not for my seeding you'd have but poor feeding
You'd surely be starving without me
I'm always content when I pay up my rent
I am happy when friends are about me

Draw near to the table my boys while you're able
Let's me hear not one word of complaining
The jingling of glasses all music surpasses
I love to see bottles a draining

Let the mighty and great roll in splendor and state
I envy them not I declare it
At my own ham my own chicken and lamb
I shear my own fleece and I wear it

I have all things in season both woodcock pheasant
I am here as a justice of quorum
At my cabins fore end I’ve a bed for a friend
A clear fireside and a jorum

I've a lawn and I’ve bowers, I have fruit and I have flowers
The lark is my morning alarmer
So ye jolly boys now that don't follow the plough
Drink long life and success to the farmer

I can't find it on Bruce's site. It seems like a great site but it is very difficult to find specific songs you are looking for there.

The song is the DT as Godspeed the Plow, and you can find several version and the tune in this thread. Godspeed the Plow.

It pays to look in Mudcat first before googling off all over the net!

Wassail!

What are the best recordings you have heard of artists that have done this song (by any of it's names)?

The Jolly Farmer The Farmer The Farmers Toast Godspeed the Plough

The ABC of the song didn't seem right to me. (I think that regular music is much easier to read than ABC's.)

Terry - there are a lot of programs out there that will take the text of the abc file and display it for you as regular music notation.
