Kentucky Waltz at Cowpie.
    KENTUCKY WALTZ
Words and music by Bill Monroe

We were [C] waltzing that night in Kentucky
Beneath the beautiful harvest [G7] moon
And I was the boy that was lucky
But it all ended too [C] soon
As I sit here alone in the moonlight
    I see your [C7] smiling [F] face
And I long once more for [C] your em-[A7] brace
And the [D7] beautiful Ken-[G7] tucky [C] waltz.

I think you'll find it pleasing to add an F6 in the second to last line as follows:

And I long once [F6] more for [C] your em-[A7] brace...

Assuming you're using a full 6-string thumbed F and your little finger is therefore unused, add the D note by placing your little finger on the second string, third fret to form F6.

Try it, you'll like it.

Yes I checked the DT. No matter where I look I can't find the tune. Even pages that tout themselves as tabs are chords only. Can anyone help? sheet music, abc's, midis, whatever.    Thanks, sj
I moved this message here from another thread on the same topic.

These recordings are at The Record Lady's All-Time Country Favorites:
'Kentucky Waltz' - Eddy Arnold (Real Country Archives Page 7)
'Kentucky Waltz' - Pee Wee King (Tribute To Pee Wee King)
And "Kentucky Waltz" for the harmonica.

I'll be happy to post an ABC encoding for the tune but I won't be able to get to it for a couple of days.

I'm not certain why GUEST reposted the ABC code above. It's identical to the ABC code I posted above on 23 Feb 04 - 04:53 PM. GUEST's code has the disadvantage of being incomplete with respect to the required header fields and GUEST didn't bother to escape the < characters in measures 11 and 18 so they are eaten by our browsers and don't appear in GUEST's code.

Don't try copy or use GUEST's code since it won't produce a useful score or MIDI file.

Here's my take on the chords in D

We were (D) waltzing that night in Kentucky, 'neath the beaudiful harvest (A) moon

I was the boy who was lucky, but it ended all to (D) soon

As I sit here alone in the moonlight, I see your (D7) smilin' (G) face

And I long once (Gm) more for (D) your em-(B)-brace, in that (E7) beautiful Ken-(A)-tucky (D) Waltz

KENTUCKY WALTZ
Bill Monroe

We were (C) waltzing that night in Kentucky
Beneath the beautiful (C/E) Har-(EbDim)-vest (G7) moon
And I was the boy that was lucky
But it all (G+) ended too (C) soon
As I sit here alone in the moonlight
I see your (C7) smiling (F) face
And I long once (D7/F#) more (F#dim) for (C/G) your em-(A7)-brace
And that (D7) beautiful Ken-(G7)-tucky (C) Waltz.

Note.
The original "Kentucky Waltz" was one of some 75 instrumentals
that Bill Monroe wrote before he tried his hand at lyric writing.
The 1934 version helped established the Monroe Brothers as a major
country act and became a mainstay in Bill's repertory when he formed
his famous Blue Grass Boys in 1938. He added a lyric to the tune
and scored another success with it in 1946, but it was Eddy Arnold's
1951 recording that became a best seller. Monroe was born in Kentucky,
and his "bluegrass style" of unamplified instrumentals was a dirrect
of the string bands that flourished in the 1920s and featured a
solo fiddle.

Here's another verse that I wrote:

Maggie's Verse

I hope that one day you'll remember
The boy who waits here for you
And we'll spend another September
In the love that we once knew
Please come back to the hills of Kentucky
To ease my lonely pain
And you and I will dance again
to the beautiful Kentucky Waltz.

This sounds very similar to a tune recorded by Ry Cooder called "I always knew that you were the one". Is it the same tune? Which came first?

It goes very nicely with The Tennessee Waltz, usually play and sing one in D and then slide into G with the other, on Melodeon.

Hey Masato Sakurai,
Why would the Kentucky Waltz be on a Peewee King Tribute album. Did Peewee ever perform this tune?
