Also in the Forum, again with no indication as to source:  Brian Og and Molly Bawn

The Road to Clady is an Irish localisation of a Scottish song, The Soor Milk Cart; the original was written by Thomas Johnstone in the 1880s.  See this previous discussion:  Road to Clady

Hello Wolfgang, Re Brian Og and Molly Bawn, this song is another anti-recruiting song. It was popular around the north of ireland during the 1940`s. The McPeake Family made a recording likely in the mid 60`s.Will try and hunt it out. Slan Ard Mhacha.

Ard,

thanks but don't, my post was a bit short and cryptic. It was a response to Vincenzo and since I wasn't sure I had found what he wanted I added the confusing question mark. If you click on my post you'll see the lyrics alright.

Wolfgang

Hello Wolfgang, Sorry, I see as usual you have all the verses as I remember them being sung by old friends now daed and gone. More power to your brain cells, as if you need that. Slan Ard Mhacha.

Hello All, I am interested in the version of "Kevin Barry" as sung by Paul Robeson, some of you helpful people may be able to give record label and number. Slan Ard Mhacha.

Ard Macha, the song you want is on disk "The Collector's Paul Robeson" on the Monitor Label. Try the site www.allmusic.com which gives details. Depending on where you live the price is either $12.99 or if you check the British site of Amazon you will find it for around £16.00. Good luck.

You're having me on ...!?

What next? Nat King Cole's version of "The Men Behind The Wire"? Louis Armstrong's version of "James Connolly"?Mahalia's version of "Booloavogue"? (Actually ... I wouldn't mind hearing that last one!)

Sorry ... the incongruity threw me. Then I remembered that Robeson was a political activist, so his recording the song no longer seems so outlandish.

I do have a version of Kevin Barry by Lonnie Donegan. Much though I am usually in awe of the man, I think he made a bit of a mistake including this in his repertoire. Ouch!

Keep 'er lit!

Hi, ard mhacha. For future reference, a new request for a song is best done by starting a new thread with the song name etc in the title, or by refreshing a thread which deals with the song in question. Because of the way the Mudcat Café works, all threads are stored as a future reference for others, so it makes sense that all discussion about say, Kevin Barry, is kept together as much as possible, to make searching easier. (Doesn't always happen, but that's the ideal).

Enjoy mudcat!
