25 Jun 01 - 12:22 PM (#491476) Subject: Meet up in/around Detroit? From: Grab Hi all, I'm back in the States again, this time for five weeks, so there should be plenty of opportunity to get some music in and meet other Mudcatters. Is there anyone around Detroit fancies a drink and a bit of a sing-song? My hotel's in Ann Arbor, but I'm working in Dearborn so it's easy for me to go to anywhere in Detroit/Windsor straight from work. So, is there anyone's local session that's worth tagging onto? Unfortunately, the Windsor Folk Club are closed up for the summer (ddw got me in there when I was here last) so that's out. I know of the Tap Room in Ypsilanti (probably be there tonight if I'm not too jet-lagged) and I've found the Ann Arbor Observer site for local stuff, but I don't know much for Detroit and the area. One date that's right out though is July 6th - Tom Paxton's at the Ark, and wild horses wouldn't keep me away from that gig! Graham.

25 Jun 01 - 12:27 PM (#491483) Subject: RE: Meet up in/around Detroit? From: Clinton Hammond Cool... I'm hosting an open mic in Leamington (40 min out of Windsor) on Thursday... A place called "Caspers Landing" I know it's sorta a long way to go... but if yer up fer it... My local, The Kildare House has a pretty good session on Tuesday nights... and I'll be gigging there on Saturday the 30th... If ya do happen to make it over, don't be a stranger eh! ;-) |

25 Jun 01 - 06:17 PM (#491728) Subject: RE: Meet up in/around Detroit? From: Grab Hmm, that's a bit of a reach, Clinton! At least on a weekday anyway - Friday/Saturday are easier, since I can at least crash on someone's floor or in the car instead of having to drag back home and then get up obscenely early the next morning for work. I'll try and get out to see your gig this weekend, anyway. I'm annoyed I had to miss the Windsor folk festival thingy, but given a choice between watching a bunch of hairy folkies or getting back to see my wife, I'd choose my missus any day! ;-) At least I'm in a cheaper car this time around - the 3-litre Taurus the company rented last time was not only unpleasant to drive but needed a little under half a tank of petrol per day to get to work (45 minutes each way)! This time, I actually asked for a lower-spec car and got a little Pontiac Sunfire which I'm rather pleased with - handles nicely, faster off the mark than the lumbering Taurus, and half the gas consumption. 25 Jun 01 - 07:18 PM (#491783) Subject: RE: Meet up in/around Detroit? From: ddw Hi Graham, Got your PM and definitely want to get together while you're here, but the next couple of weeks are gonna be difficult. I start two weeks vacation Friday and the first weekend is gonna be me, a jackhammer and 600 square feet of patio to lift. Then it's me and lots of sand and bricks to put it right again. After that I'm in West Virginia for a week of blues. Back on the Sunday. Hoping to stop in Ohio and get Catspaw straightened out — he's been slacking lately just because of a little thing with them cutting him open to overhaul his ticker. The blues fest tickets are still on offer if you want them — I won't be able to use them — and I REALLY would like to try out your new Regal, if I can talk you into letting it out of your hands for a few minutes. Give me call when you get a chance. If you don't have the numbers, shoot me a PM and I'll give them to you. cheers, david |

25 Jun 01 - 08:35 PM (#491820) Subject: RE: Meet up in/around Detroit? From: Big Mick Grab, I am about 2 and a half hours from you and we will definitely get together while you are here. I will roadtrip over. And Clinton's not as far as it seems. Maybe we can make arrangements to meet and then I will take you over the bridge or through the tunnel and we will visit with him. I have a gig on July 3, which is the day before our national holiday, but unfortunately it is in the middle of the day, and a 3 hour drive for you. But I will get over to see you. PM me at mlane@accn.org and we will hook up. All the best, Mick |

25 Jun 01 - 08:52 PM (#491833) Subject: RE: Meet up in/around Detroit? From: ddw Grab, Mick, et al — There's another picker here in town (besides Clinton) who's worth hearing and I'm wondering if we could work out something for an evening with him and a little picking of our own. The guy's name is Gregg Cox and he's part of a trio (with mandolin and bass) called Train 45. Helluva picker! And the mandolin player is AMAZING — 18 years old (soon) and just absolute greased lightning. These guys play at the Windsor Press Club about once a month — they were up there last Friday, but I had to miss them — and I'll find out in a day or two when they're there next. Anybody game? Maybe have a session at my place before or afterward???? david

25 Jun 01 - 11:59 PM (#491933) Subject: RE: Meet up in/around Detroit? From: ddw OK, Clinton, Gregg is a bit better than you — but don't sell yourself short, lad. You're doing a different kind of thing and you're pretty good at it. david |

26 Jun 01 - 09:24 AM (#492120) Subject: RE: Meet up in/around Detroit? From: Grab Dave, that sounds like a top plan. Incidentally, if you need a hand hauling stuff around this weekend, let me know! I'm planning on getting over to watch Clinton in action on the Saturday anyway, so I'll definitely be in the neighbourhood. I'll ring you this evening. Clinton, any chance on some directions to your gig (or a website or something)? Graham. |

26 Jun 01 - 01:38 PM (#492322) Subject: RE: Meet up in/around Detroit? From: Clinton Hammond david... while I appreciate the support and such, I'm man enough to admit that greg is in a whole different world of guitar than I am... he really is a pleasure to watch! And Wee Mark on mandolin is just... well, I never know if I wanna shake his hand or break it! LOL!!! Graham... Directions eh... for saturday night, I'm at the Kildare House... It's on the corner of Kildare and Wyandote... if you come across via the tunnel it's easy peasy... ask the guy/gal in the booth how to get to wyandote so you're going away from downtown... I think you'll be directed to your left... The intersection where you come out by the tunnel will have a mcdonalds on one corner... Once yer on Wyandote, and heading away from downtown, it's easy peasy to find the Kildare house... just drive straight down Wyandote... You'll pass bars and stores applenty... the K House will eventually (6 or 8 lights) show up on your left hand side... if you should miss it and come to and underpass, you've gone too far... turn around and come back! LOL!! ;-) |

28 Jun 01 - 10:28 AM (#493915) Subject: RE: Meet up in/around Detroit? From: PeteBoom Not far from Ann Arbor (or Detroit) is the town of Saline - the home of the Saline Celtic Fest. Each year they bring in at least one major group, a couple of major solo acts and a bunch of regional players, along with local pipe bands and the like. The last couple of years there has been a tremendous session in the beer tent while the barrels get drained. THis year the festival is July 14 and the headliners are Solas. Check the festival out at www.salineceltic.org. Regards -

04 Jul 01 - 02:23 PM (#498419) Subject: RE: Meet up in/around Detroit? From: Grab OK folks. Passing on some info from Dave, "Train 45" are on at the Press Club in Windsor this Friday (the 6th). Head along there with your instruments, and we'll see the music and have a bit of a jam in the intermission (Dave/Clinton have OK'd that with the band). Sounds like this could be a very good night. I don't know what time we're planning on meeting up - I guess maybe 8-9-ish? Clinton, can you post some directions please? To add to the activity, there's also a mini folk festival in Evart on the Saturday (the 7th), as part of a general fair-type thing there. Performing are Tom Paxton and Lou and Peter Berryman, plus some others. (FYI, Tom Paxton is also at the Ark in Ann Arbor on Friday, but that clashes with Train 45). This starts at 12 noon and finishes at 8pm. It's a bit of a drive over there (3 hours or so from Windsor) but not unachievable, particularly if you're prepared to camp or sleep in the car that night. The relevant times for this are: 1-2pm, Robert B. Jones and Matt Watroba; 3-4pm, Lou and Peter Berryman; 4-5pm, Ann Hills and Tom Paxton; 7-8pm, Tom Paxton and Ann Hills. According to the organiser, these are just tentative times though - the musicians are free to rearrange it as they want. Graham. |

06 Jul 01 - 01:06 PM (#499910) Subject: RE: Meet up in/around Detroit? From: Grab Refresh. It's this evening, folks! (And tomorrow for the Tom Paxton/Berrymans thing) The best directions I could find off the Internet, since Clinton seems to be incommunicado ATM and Dave is lacking a connection... "Directions: Take Ouellette Avenue towards the River until you hit Riverside Drive and make a left on Riverside Drive East. On your right, the address for the club is 63 Riverside Drive East, it's above a building front with a garage door. If you've hit Goyeau, then you've gone too far. It's on the first block when you turn left off of Ouellette Avenue." This map shows Windsor. Riverside is the waterfront, and Ouellette is the road just to the left of the tunnel. Graham. |
